Chapter 208: The Night Before The Departure
At the end of the day, no matter how disappointed those who didn’t get included in the lineup were, they could only swallow all their complaints, especially since they could see Kumiko’s point here. Of course, that didn’t an they would change themselves. In their mind, they had the right to be arrogant here, as they were indeed stronger than ever.
Seeing her players’ chaotic state like this, Kumiko couldn’t help but sigh, starting to question herself.
"Is this the right decision, or should I let them play since they are our best players here?" The girl murmured to herself quietly.
Higo, who was always in her vicinity, overheard her murmur, and he perked up imdiately. "Don’t worry, Kumiko-chan. They are just being butthurt here. They know that their behavior is unacceptable, but they insist that they are not wrong here. Sotis, you have to take them down and show them so authority." He scoffed.
Well, this was also his attempt to hide his guilt. After all, he also threw the sa remark a few days ago, when his mother asked whether he was confident of winning the semifinal or not. Higo would say it was confidence, but right now, the line between this and arrogance was quite blurry here.
Kumiko just smiled weakly before murmuring again, "What if my replacing them brings defeat to the team?" Her question was thrown in a hesitating tone, as if she herself was afraid that this possibility could happen.
In return, after pondering for a mont, Higo just shrugged it off like nothing. "Well, yeah, but what if they played and their attitude brings the team down? No one can know everything in the future, right?" He grinned cheekily.
Kumiko snorted a little, knowing that this was a subtle joke for Higo’s clairvoyance ability. She just punched the boy lightly before walking next to him in silence, still being bothered by her players’ reaction earlier.
"You know what, though? The players you are replaced with are also quite capable, right? I an, Kazawa is an engine, and the twins themselves have already proven that they are ready for big occasions. They might complain about Sano, but at least, Jun’s last few performances warranted a little bit of punishnt, right?"
This was indeed what Higo truly thought. After all, Jun didn’t do really well in the last two gas, and yet, he acted like he was the best defender in the world right now, looking down on Esashi High just because they beat that school way earlier in the spring. It was good to put him on the bench, trying to make sure that he had the right mindset first before going back to the pitch.
Once they were back at Higo’s ho, the girl didn’t forget to nag him about tomorrow’s journey.
"We are going to be there at least for five days, so bring more clothes, especially the warr ones! Also, even though the school rents a bus for us, that doesn’t an you can arrive late! Oh, you are going to go with , anyway, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Still, bring more snacks, and don’t forget the boots for the grass pitch! Your jersey as well, both the ho and away!"
Higo just nodded quietly, knowing that he would never be able to rember everything she said. Fortunately, the boy was quite smart, hiding his phone in his pocket, which he put in recording mode to hear again later.
A mont later, Higo’s mother suddenly opened the door, looking at them both with a knowing smile. "So, you guys are preparing for tomorrow’s trip? Shall you chat inside?" She asked, offering for Kumiko to have dinner there.
"Not today, Obaasan. I apologize. My mother is going to be ho, so we can have dinner together tonight." Kumiko smiled back apologetically.
The older woman narrowed her eyes for a mont before a genuine smile curled wider on her face. "Oh, it is good that Yumiko-chan finally makes an effort to get closer to you! Just say hello from , okay?"
"Sure! See you tomorrow, Obaasan!"
As the girl waved cheerfully, Higo’s eyes were still locked on her, watching until every trace of her disappeared from his sight. He even forgot that his mother was still here, only realizing that he was still in front of the door as the woman suddenly coughed a little.
"Ah, it is good to be young again..." Minami sighed deeply, her eyes darting playfully. "Still, you are so bold here, admiring your girlfriend in front of your mother. Don’t you think I wouldn’t be jealous here?" She huffed, hands on her hips.
"She is not my girlfriend yet," Higo answered almost in reflex, before putting his hand in his mouth as he realized what he had just said. Well, he wasn’t fast enough, as his mother still caught his words here.
"Oh, not yet, huh? So, any plan on when to confess?" She wiggled her eyebrows playfully.
Higo’s face flushed red from the combination of embarrassnt and the cold weather outside. It was always awkward to talk about his love life with his mother. However, she always seed to know everything, and the boy himself didn’t have anything to hide.
"Later... Once I achieve a bigger thing, I will think of how to do it properly." In the end, that was what he said, before storming quickly into his room. "Anyway, it is cold outside! I want to take a quick shower first before having to cook, so I have to leave first! Bye, Mom!"
He didn’t even wait for her response, just barging in quite rudely. Still, Minami just giggled, knowing that he was too embarrassed by his own words here. In the end, she just shook her head exasperatedly, especially when she rembered what her boy said earlier.
"Ah, to be young... Always wanting to show your love in the most grandiose way possible, forgetting that even the simplest confession can be more heartfelt... Maybe I have to call Aya-chan and let her remind Ryukkun about this? I am sure he will be less awkward about this if the conversation cos from his big sister, right?"
