Chapter 29: 125

I was more worried about the clump of resources we had left unchecked on the floor, but it was just unnecessary stuff.

Soone holding a scroll was running through the halls. As he was making his way, he took a misstep on a cup, which rolled his ankle.

That’s got to hurt.

"What is it?" Steinen lood over him.

"I have an ergency ssage for the hero, sir."

"My lady, a ssage for you." He opened the door.

Inside the chamber was Incus diligently training, balancing on top of Steinen’s great sword with the tip of her finger.

Jumping down, Incus wiped the sweat off her chiseled body.

"Go on?"

Opening the scroll, he began to read:

"An army of shadow-type demons has been sighted, currently approaching. From analysis, they vary in sizes; however, we are unable to get an answer on what their weaknesses are."

With a sigh, Incus began putting on her armor.

"They never know what the demon’s weaknesses are."

Going into another room of the chamber, Steinen quickly changed into intricate dium armor.

"A lighter armor will suffice. Mobility will be prioritized over heavy steel."

"Quit speaking in riddles. Let’s just go."

Grabbing as much food as we could from the cart that would drop off food for Incus, we stuffed our mouths before following her.

"Lieur, how many arrows do you have?" I readjusted my light armor.

"Thanks to Alleus’ plundering, I now have sixty-eight, captain."

"Alleus?" I turned toward her.

"Everything is in order, partner. I have everything I need." She threw glances at Vertere.

Looking at our mage, he was making his fingers fight.

"Oh right, this is your first raid. Just make sure to listen to my orders and stick to the formation."

Giving

a nod, he replied:

"D-Don’t worry about . I’ll make sure that those rotten fiends won’t get a chance to penetrate."

With everything set, I led the charge.

"Winner, winner, chicken dinner."

"Huh?" Alleus gave

a weird look.

"I don’t know, it just felt natural." It must have been a reference from the real world. I couldn’t quite seem to rember where it ca from, though.

Because the demons were so far away, we got there using the horses from the stables near the palace.

Standing outside the front gates, we held out our weapons. Blending in with the army, we stepped into our formation. But the army this ti wasn’t the elites, just the standard knights and mages. They must have believed Incus could take this on without much support.

Alleus and I would be the front liners. The vanguard was Lieur, who would be Vertere’s eyes while also covering for us with her archery. I debated whether we should use our switching strategy from the previous raid, but we couldn’t risk separating, and the one in the front might take on more than they could handle. Especially Alleus.

Incus stood in front of the army.

"Don’t stand in my way. If you have any questions... then ask Steinen."

"My lady, they’re here." Steinen planted his sword into the ground.

Looking in the distance, an army that killed the light approached, making the sky crimson alongside it.

Flexing my body by doing stretches while hopping, I pulled out the steel blade.

These were just shadow monsters. They must be really weak. But because the army was deployed, I couldn’t be too cautious.

"Raise your shields!" Steinen commanded, and a row of knights pulled out their shields and grounded their stances. Seeing this, he continued:

"Don’t let a single one of them get through. Fall back once you get a deep wound."

As the shadow army got closer and closer, Incus summoned one of her hero blades, the Fire Hero’s Sword.

"Mages and archers, get ready to fire!" Steinen’s shout echoed through the battlefield.

The shadows were about four hundred ters away.

"Hold it..!"

Three hundred ters.

"Hold it...!"

Two hundred ters.

"Hold it...!"

One hundred ters.

"Fire! Don’t spare your mana or ammunition!"

Countless mages then began their chants and covered the crimson sky with a shower of spells.

"Fireball!"

"Hellfire shower!"

"Fire bolt!"

"Twin vortex of gale!"

"Water jet!"

"Spiked earth!"

"Thunderbolt!"

The blasts of spells made my ears ring.

Soon the firing of spells ceased, a cloud of smoke covering their figures.

"They’re still alive..." A drop of sweat fell down Lieur’s face.

"How is that possible? That should have taken them down!" Alleus scratched her head furiously.

"Rotten... this whole thing is rotten. How can we possibly defeat them?"

I had no answer to their questions. The author hadn’t written or indicated their weakness.

Eventually, Incus leapt forward and began to attack.

There was no need for us to try chasing after her because there were so many demons, and they usually never went too far away from the castle walls.

Arcs of fire danced in the void of shadows. Jumping in the air, Incus used ExcaliBurn to take down a giant shadow.

But none of the attacks worked.

The attacks weren’t going through the shadows. Instead, they were being swallowed. Then, in the blink of an eye, a shadow version of Incus jumped in the air and tackled her. However, Steinen jumped in the way and blocked the attack.

"W-was that a copy of the hero...!" Soone from the army comnted.

"I-It looks like these fiends work like the appearance-altering spell, but they can also copy the person as a whole."

"Don’t engage in combat with yourself. Fall back the mont you see yourself." The shadow army seed limitless, and the author wasn’t going easy on Incus. Her battle seed to lead to no end.

At the front of the kingdom’s army, a row of knights with shields took form and began bashing through the formation.

Pointing their spears, knights began jabbing at the shadows, but their attacks were deflected. Shadow spearn conjured, retaliating against us.

The mages were exhausted of mana. They had used countless potions to restore their mana pools, which was evident by the glass vials on the ground.

"Ahh!"

"There’s a breach in the defense...!" I pointed my steel blade.

Like water breaking through a dam, the shadows quickly overwheld the army.

"Sobody help—!" A knight in front of

was decapitated.

Shit. These guys were much stronger than expected.
