Chapter 010 Are you secretly in love with ?
“If I get infected... make sure to end it for quickly!”
Zhang Su stared at the zombie, no longer human nor ghost, and silently resolved to prepare an honorable bullet for himself when the ti ca. If that mont arrived, at least he could leave with dignity.
As he thought this through, he carefully observed the situation. After four or five minutes, Zheng Xinyu’s voice broke the silence.
“Let... let take a look too…”
Zhang Su glanced at Zheng Xinyu. Her expression was complicated—both resistant and curious. Though she clearly didn’t want to, she still decided to give it a try. The conflicting emotions were evident in her furrowed brow.
He nodded without saying anything and slowly stepped aside.
Zheng Xinyu cautiously approached the peephole, brushing aside the strands of hair blocking her view. When she finally saw the zombie clearly, it was as if she had been electrocuted. She slapped a hand over her mouth just as a scream was about to escape.
“Mmph... Huff, huff…”
She let out only a muffled gasp before her breathing turned rapid. Leaning against the wall by the doorway, she clutched her chest, her face filled with uncontrollable terror.
Zhang Su didn’t have ti to comfort her. He quickly returned to the peephole and confird the zombie hadn’t reacted. It was still circling aimlessly, like a blindfolded donkey trudging around a mill.
“The sound just now was really faint, but in such a quiet environnt, even I could hear it. How co it didn’t? It seems zombies aren’t as sensitive to sound as I thought!”
Zhang Su focused on the zombie’s ears. Other than their unnatural color, their shape hadn’t changed.
“Feeling better now?” he asked, after carefully observing for a while.
Zheng Xinyu had cald down a lot, though her face still bore traces of fear.
“Let look again…” she said, pressing a hand to her chest. Her face showed both terror and stubbornness. Before Zhang Su could agree, she leaned in again.
Zhang Su was ready to cover her mouth if needed but found her reaction much better this ti. Apart from her heaving chest and trembling fists, there were no extre outbursts. Relieved, he stood silently to the side, pondering ways to deal with the zombie.
The two stood there quietly, one observing, the other thinking. Ti ticked by.
As Zheng Xinyu tried to overco her fear of the zombie, she remained oblivious to the fact that just across the hallway, another pair of eyes were watching through the peephole of apartnt 802!
Zhang Su’s building had two units per floor. Apartnt 802 was larger than his 801, with three bedrooms, two living areas, and a layout spanning over 120 square ters.
Inside, a young woman in a silk nightgown was pressed against the door like a giant gecko, her face even paler than her exposed legs beneath the gown. Her actions were comical, but the terror in her eyes as she watched the zombie roam the hallway was nearly palpable.
After ten minutes, Zheng Xinyu finally stepped away from the peephole. She rubbed her stiff shoulders and neck from maintaining the sa posture for so long.
Back in the living room, the two sat away from the door. Zhang Su looked at her with approval. “Not scared anymore?”
“Still a little,” she admitted, nodding uncertainly. “But I think I can handle it now. At least I won’t freeze up in fear, right?”
“Being able to do that in such a short ti is already impressive. If you’re not scared, how about we deal with that thing together?” Zhang Su suggested.
“D-deal with it? Is that a good idea?” Zheng Xinyu frowned, clearly conflicted.
“What’s wrong with it? You don’t still think that’s a person, do you? That it’s Brother Li?”
“Isn’t it?” she blinked and countered.
“Of course not!” Zhang Su flicked her forehead with a sharp snap. A red mark instantly appeared as he continued, “The mont the zombie virus took over, he stopped being human!”
Zheng Xinyu hesitated, nodding slowly. “Maybe you’re right. But why bother dealing with it? Are you planning to go downstairs for sothing? There’s no need to risk it. We have enough supplies for two weeks—don’t take unnecessary risks!”
Zheng Xinyu felt she could maybe handle killing a fish, but a zombie was a different story entirely. Watching it through the door without fear was already an achievent. She wasn’t sure she could remain calm face-to-face.
Before Zhang Su could reply, the sound of helicopters filled the air again. This ti, the noise was even louder.
Zheng Xinyu rushed to the window, cracked it open, and peered outside. “There are over a dozen helicopters! They must be the special police reinforcents, right?” she said excitedly.
Zhang Su didn’t answer. His gaze, now calm and focused, lingered on the helicopters sweeping across the sky.
“Su-ge, let’s just wait quietly at ho. The reinforcents are here, so things should be under control soon. Rescue might co faster than we think. There’s no need to take any risks!”
No one had confird that the helicopters belonged to reinforcents, but Zheng Xinyu convinced herself they did. And she truly believed it.
“If you think we don’t have enough to eat, I can eat less and save more for you. Just don’t take any chances, please!” she pleaded.
Her voice tugged at Zhang Su’s heart. He softened his expression, replacing his serious look with a teasing smile. “Willing to eat less just for ? You’re so kind to . Could it be… you have a crush on ?”
Zheng Xinyu hadn’t expected him to crack a joke in such a tense mont. She rolled her eyes, briefly avoiding his gaze. But after a mont’s thought, she seed to make up her mind.
“Yeah, I do! I’m in love with your muscles, so what? Deal with it, eunuch!”
Zhang Su had appreciated her first sentence, but the last three words threw him for a loop.
“Eunuch? Eunuch? I change girlfriends every three months! You can’t even imagine the fun I have!” he retorted indignantly.
“Pfft,” Zheng Xinyu scoffed. “The more people brag about sothing, the more they lack it. If you really switched girlfriends every three months, I’ve dropped hints—obvious and subtle—so many tis. I’m not unattractive, am I? Yet you act like a monk!”
If he truly rotated girlfriends as he claid, Zheng Xinyu believed he wouldn’t have missed a chance like her. She didn’t mind a flirt, but her real fear was that he might be into n.
“Well…” Zhang Su scratched his head, silently thinking.
To him, relationships often boiled down to pros and cons. If pursuing one benefit ant giving up another, he’d choose the greater gain.
Turning a tenant into a girlfriend might an losing rent and incurring extra expenses. No matter how he calculated it, it seed like a losing deal.
