Shimizu-san and the Werewolf Ga
On the second morning of the camp, we, the Astronomy Club, had finished our breakfast and were walking down the hallway together.
“The breakfast was delicious! Now, where shall we start our city exploration until evening?”
“Ai, about that…”
“What’s wrong, Yousuke? Why the gloomy face?”
“I might not be up for walking around the city today.”
“Huh?”
Ai-san looked as surprised as if she was a pigeon shot with a pea-shooter. (TN: Proverb, a look of shock, staring with wide eyes and an open mouth.)
“Um, I might also have a hard ti walking around the city all afternoon.”
“I’d rather not move around too much until the sumr festival.”
“What, you two as well? What happened all of a sudden?”
“It hurts.”
“Is there sowhere that hurts? Where does it hurt?”
Ai-san looked concerned.
“…My whole body is sore.”
Hearing that, Ai-san’s expression softened.
“Oh, it’s just muscle soreness. Well, it’s true we played a lot at the beach yesterday. Are Daiki-kun and Mio-chan feeling the sa?”
“…Yes.”
Seto-san nodded silently. It seed like the aftermath of yesterday’s activities was making everyone’s muscles scream in pain.
“All of you have muscle soreness?”
“Ahaha…”
I could only give a wry smile.
To , it was mysterious that the Shimizu sisters showed no signs of fatigue after all that activity yesterday.
“Then it can’t be helped. Let’s cancel today’s city stroll and play so indoor gas!”
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s the worst if we push ourselves now and can’t enjoy the sumr festival together later. Alright, then let’s gather in the boys’ room once we’re ready! Yousuke and Daiki-kun, please tidy up the room before we co!”
“Understood.”
And so, we each returned to our rooms for the ti being.

“I’ve been thinking. How about we play the Werewolf Ga?”
“The Werewolf Ga?”
About twenty minutes later, the Astronomy Club had gathered in the room where Yousuke-san and I were staying.
“Yeah, I played it before with friends and it was fun, so I wanted to try it with this group.”
“I don’t know much about it. What kind of ga is the Werewolf Ga?”
“Co to think of it, Yousuke and I haven’t played it before. Anyone else not know?”
“I’m sorry. I don’t know.”
“I’m not familiar with it either.”
“…Just explain it quickly.”
It seed that everyone except Ai-san wasn’t very familiar with the Werewolf Ga.
“Okay. Since it looks like most of us don’t know, I’ll explain as simply as possible. The Werewolf Ga is basically a ga where you’re divided into two sides: the villagers who want to protect the peace of the village, and the werewolves who want to munch on the villagers, each aiming for victory.”
“Two factions fighting against each other?”
“That’s right. The werewolves’ victory condition is to equal or outnumber the villagers. The villagers’ victory condition is to expel all the werewolves.”
“I’ve been curious since earlier, but what exactly is a ‘werewolf’?”
It’s part of the ga’s na, so it must be sothing important, but I still don’t understand what it is.
“The Werewolf is one of the roles in the Werewolf Ga, but I’ll explain that later. First, let’s talk about the general flow of the ga. First, we decide the roles. Each role is determined randomly. This is where you find out which faction you belong to.”
“So the roles are basically fixed for each faction?”
“Yousuke catches on quick! Once that’s settled, the ga proceeds in turns. It starts with a night turn, then a morning turn, and then a night turn again, and we repeat turns until one faction wins.”
“What happens during the morning and night turns?”
“During the night turn, you can use your role’s abilities. For example, if you’re a werewolf, you can eliminate a villager from the ga. Then, there’s voting during the morning turn, and the person with the most votes gets expelled.”
The word “expelled” reminds of the villagers’ victory condition ntioned earlier.
“So the villagers’ side tries to expel the werewolves through voting in the morning turn, while the werewolves’ side aims for victory by reducing the number of villagers with their abilities during the night turn.”
“That’s correct. Now, let’s talk about the roles. There are many roles in the Werewolf Ga, but for our ga, there will be four: Villagers and the Seer on the villagers’ side, and Werewolves and the Madman on the werewolves’ side. I’ll explain each role.”
“Make it easy to understand, please.”
“Okay! First, the villagers. This role has no abilities. Just focus on voting! Next, the Seer. The Seer can perform a divination once during the night turn, revealing non-werewolves as white and werewolves as black. It’s a crucial role for finding werewolves, so do your best!”
“I see. What about the roles on the werewolf side?”
“The Werewolf, as I ntioned a bit earlier, can eliminate soone during the night turn. Since we have a small number of players, eliminations will start on the second night. The Madman is an ally of the werewolves. They have no abilities, but they should play smart to prevent the werewolves from being chosen in the morning votes! Note that the Madman appears white when divined by the Seer.”
“How should the madman help the werewolves?”
Indeed, without any abilities, it seems the Madman can’t do much besides vote in the morning turn.
“One example is to pretend to be the Seer. If there appear to be two Seers, it’ll cause confusion about who’s the real one, right?”
Even if the real Seer identifies a werewolf and claims they’re black, if the Madman posing as a fake Seer accuses soone else of being black, then the others won’t know who’s telling the truth.
“Let’s learn the rest as we play! For this ga, we’ll have two villagers, one Seer, one Werewolf, and one Madman. We’ll use an app on my smartphone to manage the ga. Pass my phone around to check your roles, please!”
And so, the Werewolf Ga began among the Astronomy Club mbers.
