Chapter 274: Chapter 274: Black Heart and Rotten Lungs
Vera Xavier knew that saving a life was the most important thing right now, but she couldn’t swallow the rage building inside her. She grabbed a bowl from the table and viciously smashed it over Rona Langdon’s head, shouting, "Mom, Cara Preston, if anything happens to Dad today, I’ll make you pay with your lives!"
Rona Langdon never expected her to get physical. She couldn’t dodge in time and the bowl hit her on the head. In an instant, blood was streaming down her face.
Rona Langdon reached up, and her hand came away covered in blood. Terrified, she immediately started shrieking at the top of her lungs, "Murder! Murder! Vera Xavier is a murderer!"
Grandma Dixon quickly poked her head out of her house to see what was happening, just in time to see Vera Xavier, her face a mask of grief and indignation, running outside with Nathaniel Nathan while carrying Zachary Preston.
Vera Xavier knew exactly what kind of people Rona Langdon and Cara Preston were. She called out urgently, "Grandma Dixon, please be a witness to what happened today! My mom and Cara Preston are the ones who caused my dad to collapse, and they just left him there! If anyone asks later, please, just tell them the truth!"
After she spoke, she hurried away. Grandma Dixon quickly called out her agreement and peered into the Preston Family’s home, only to see Rona Langdon run out of the house with a bloody head, wailing, "Vera Xavier, you damned monster! It was bad enough you angered your father until he passed out, but then you attacked me too! Are you even human?!"
With that, she plopped down on the ground in front of her door and began to make a scene, beating her chest and wailing, "Vera Xavier, how could you be so vicious? This is patricide and matricide! If I’d known you’d turn out like this, I should have strangled you the day you were born!"
Her wailing and screaming immediately drew the attention of everyone in the residential compound who was still at home. One by one, they came out of their houses and gathered around.
Rona Langdon, seeing her audience, shouted with even more gusto, "Vera Xavier, you damned monster, you ungrateful wretch! You angered your father to death and then you hit me! Why doesn’t heaven just strike you down?"
She was demonstrating her special talent, putting the very essence of vulgar cursing on full display.
Cara Preston also came out, feigning concern. She hugged Rona Langdon and began to wail loudly, "My sister is such a menace! It was bad enough she framed me for cheating during the exam so I couldn’t take the college entrance exams, but now she comes home, angers Dad to death, and even hits Mom! Uncles and Aunts, you have to stand up for us!"
The mother-daughter duo worked in perfect harmony, piling all the blame onto Vera Xavier, painting her as a giant, black-hearted piece of scum.
Grandma Dixon, who lived next door and had witnessed the entire sequence of events, couldn’t help but step forward and speak up. "Vera had an exam this afternoon, right? Thinking about the time, she must have just gotten home after finishing it. I just heard her open the door, and the first thing she did was call out Preston’s name. I certainly didn’t hear her arguing with Preston!"
Rona Langdon immediately flew into a rage and started screaming, "You old hag! You jinxed your husband to death, then you jinxed your son to death, and now you’re meddling in my family’s business every day! Are you trying to get our family ruined and killed too?!"
Grandma Dixon’s husband had died during the Sino-Vietnamese War when she was young. Her eldest son was swept away by a flood while participating in disaster relief efforts. She was now living with her younger son.
These events were the source of a lifetime of pain for Grandma Dixon. Anyone with a shred of conscience would never bring them up in front of her. Hearing Rona Langdon’s words, she became absolutely livid and cursed back, "My husband and eldest son dying is none of your damn business! Other people might not know, but I live right next door! You think I don’t know about all the shady shit that goes on in your house?!"
