Chapter 273: Chapter 273: The Coldness of Human Nature
Zachary Preston had been swamped with work recently and was constantly being hassled by Rona Langdon. He was under immense pressure, already at his breaking point. His nerves were stretched taut, and when they angered him like this, his previously hidden medical condition flared up instantly.
Rona Langdon and Cara Preston were both shocked. Cara Preston asked, "Dad, what’s wrong?"
Lying on the floor with a pale face, Zachary Preston didn’t answer. She reached out to check his breathing; it was faint. She turned her head, looking at Rona Langdon in a panic, and said, "Mom, something seems wrong with Dad. Shouldn’t we take him to the hospital?"
Rona Langdon was still fuming about Zachary Preston hiding a personal stash of money. She shot Zachary Preston a sidelong glance and said dismissively, "He just fainted from anger. Money is tight at home; how can we afford to waste it at the hospital? He definitely just held his breath and passed out. Let him lie on the floor for a bit. He’ll probably wake up on his own. Don’t worry about him."
Cara Preston had always known that in Rona Langdon’s eyes, only money mattered. Besides, she was also angry at Zachary Preston for favoring Vera Xavier. In any case, Zachary Preston wasn’t her biological father. If Rona Langdon wasn’t going to do anything, she couldn’t be bothered to either.
With a tacit understanding, the mother and daughter went upstairs together. On the way up, Rona Langdon poked Cara Preston’s forehead and said, "You idiot! You can’t even frame someone properly. You let Vera Xavier turn the tables on you, and now you can’t even take the college entrance exams! You’re absolutely useless!"
Cara Preston said, feeling wronged, "How was I supposed to know Vera Xavier was so cunning!"
Just thinking about it made her angry. Her plan had been so thorough—she had even been prepared to sacrifice Elise Langdon—but in the end, Vera Xavier had managed to bite back, leaving her with a ruined reputation and unable to take the college entrance exams.
Cara Preston knew perfectly well that being unable to take the exams meant her reputation was truly ruined this time. Marrying Nathaniel Nathan would now be next to impossible.
But she just couldn’t accept it. ’I’m so smart, so outstanding, so gentle! I absolutely deserve the best man in the world. How could he have been snatched away by Vera Xavier!’
During her afternoon exam, Vera Xavier was on edge the entire time. She kept feeling like something was about to happen.
She forced herself to calm down, finished the exam paper as quickly as she could, and was the first person in the entire school to leave the examination hall.
Nathaniel Nathan was waiting for her outside. Seeing her come out so early with an anxious expression, he asked, "Didn’t go well?"
Vera Xavier shook her head. "I don’t know why, but I have this panicked feeling in my chest. I want to go home."
Nathaniel Nathan nodded and immediately drove her back to the Preston Family’s home. The moment she opened the door, she saw Zachary Preston lying unconscious on the floor. She was stunned and rushed over, calling his name. When he didn’t answer, she quickly reached out to check his breathing. It was already extremely faint.
As she looked at his head, she noticed blood trickling out. ’It’s a cerebral hemorrhage!’ She was terrified and yelled for Nathaniel Nathan, who was still parking the car outside. "Nathaniel, get in here and help!"
Nathaniel Nathan heard the urgency in her voice and hurried inside, helping Vera Xavier carry Zachary Preston to the car outside.
As Vera Xavier ran out of the courtyard gate, she glanced back and saw Rona Langdon and a somewhat gloating Cara Preston standing on the second-floor balcony, watching the scene with cold detachment.
Rage instantly churned in Vera Xavier’s heart. She had always known Rona Langdon was greedy and cold-hearted, and that Cara Preston was cruel and vicious. But she had never imagined they would actually treat Zachary Preston like this!
