Chapter 258: Chapter 258: Flirting in Public

Vera Xavier was still debating how to get her backpack back when Nathaniel Nathan walked over, wearing her pink backpack and completely ignoring the stares of those around them. The sight of him only made her more embarrassed.

’I could just slap myself right now,’ she thought. ’It’s bad enough I ran my mouth, but I also had to be so careless and leave him with something to hold over me.’

He stood at her front door with the backpack on, neither going in nor speaking. He just stood there ramrod straight, watching her with a ghost of a smile.

His stare made her skin crawl. She didn’t dare look him in the eye, and she had no idea how she was going to get the backpack from him.

Fortunately, Zachary Preston was just getting home from work. Seeing Nathaniel at the door, he smiled and said, "Nathaniel, you’re here! Why aren’t you going in?"

Nathaniel Nathan said lightly, "Vera Xavier left her backpack in my car. I’m just dropping it off, then I’ll be on my way."

Zachary Preston faltered for a moment when he saw the two of them. He keenly sensed the unusual atmosphere between them. After a glance back and forth, he quickly understood. A faint smile appeared in his eyes. "Oh, is that so? Vera, go get your backpack!"

After speaking, he gave Vera Xavier a knowing look before heading straight inside.

He had been young once, too; how could he not understand these things? Though he didn’t know the full story, he could tell there was something going on between them.

Vera Xavier was already embarrassed, but meeting Zachary Preston’s gaze made it even worse. ’It’s over,’ she lamented internally. ’I’ve embarrassed myself all the way to my own front door!’

Nathaniel Nathan raised an eyebrow. "Vera Xavier, come get your backpack."

Vera Xavier bit her lip. She walked over to him, not daring to look at him, and reached for the backpack. She pulled, but it didn’t budge. She pulled again, and still nothing. After the fifth try, she finally couldn’t help but look up at him.

Then she saw his face—cold on the surface, but with laughter in his eyes. His gaze seemed to see right through her, and it carried a hint of flirtation. Her face flushed red as she remembered the stupid thing she’d said, and she reached out to give the backpack another hard tug.

The corner of his mouth quirked up as he pulled the backpack back slightly. In an instant, she was pulled right in front of him. Then, she heard his low, husky voice say, "I’m waiting for you to have your way with me."

Vera Xavier pulled at the backpack with all her might. She had expected him to hold on, but to her surprise, he didn’t resist this time. The moment the bag was in her hands, she snatched it and ran for the house. As she turned, she heard his stifled laugh.

Vera Xavier grew even more flustered. After running into the house, she foolishly turned to close the door. As she did, she subconsciously glanced back at him, only to see him watching her with a cool, detached expression.

When he saw her looking, he silently mouthed three words. Her face instantly turned beet red, because she could read his lips. The three words he mouthed were: "I want you!"

Vera Xavier fumbled with the lock, deadbolting the main door from the inside. ’How can he act like such a pervert so calmly and naturally?’ she fumed. ’To say such lewd, shameless things with such an impassive face!’

Zachary Preston saw her actions and asked with some curiosity, "Vera, what’s wrong?"

Vera Xavier couldn’t exactly tell Zachary Preston what had just happened with Nathaniel Nathan, so she feigned composure and made up an excuse. "A big German shepherd suddenly appeared outside. I was afraid it would run into the house, so I shut the door."

Zachary Preston looked her up and down. "Why is your face so red?"

She blurted out subconsciously, "The German shepherd scared me!"

The moment the words left her mouth, she wanted to slap herself. ’What am I even saying?!’
