The way to Vanessa’s apartnt was slow. Because of the rain and it was the ti for white-collar workers to go ho, there was heavy traffic.
After almost half an hour, they reached the apartnt and headed straight to Vanessa’s floor.
Alaric knocked on her door and waited for it to open.
However, it did not budge.
He knocked harder and louder this ti while looking over at his boss, whose complexion was now pale and dreary.
When the result was still the sa, Landon took his place and banged his knuckles against the door. Each ti his hand t the wood, Alaric couldn’t help but flinch. The way his boss was knocking on that door was as if he was trying to knock it over.
Of course, he doubted that would happen.
Then, suddenly, Alaric hurriedly stopped Landon.
"Sir, enough!" he tried to grab his arm, but Landon easily overpowered him.
Alaric did not give up. How could he? After seeing the blood painting his boss’ knuckles?
Landon continued. He felt the skin on his knuckles being peeled off as he knocked. But he ignored it. It was a small price he was willing to give if it would make the people inside the apartnt co out.
Sadly, even after bloodying his hands, no one answered him.
Instead, people from the other apartnts on the sa floor started coming out of their rooms, watching the spectacle and whispering amongst themselves.
"What’s happening?"
"That scared . I thought the building was being demolished!"
"What is he doing? Was he dumped by the person living in that apartnt?"
"Who knows? But maybe you’re right."
"Tsk, tsk, look at his face. He’s so handso. But he must have been dumped."
"Shouldn’t we call the police? He’s making a lot of noise and disturbing us!"
Alaric was alard when he heard they would call the police. If the police caught and reported Landon, the CEO of West Palais Corporation, for a noise disturbance, it would have been the biggest story of the year! He absolutely cannot let that happen!
"Boss, let’s go. People are watching us, and it wouldn’t be good if it’s spread around!"
Landon glanced at the people watching him. He turned away and ignored them.
He was about to continue knocking on the door when a voice was heard behind him.
"Stop. You won’t find what you’re looking for in there."
Turning around, Landon saw a young man standing re feet from him with two grocery bags in his hands.
Landon’s eyes flashed with anger. "Who are you?"
He couldn’t be five years younger than him. Was he the reason why Lucy didn’t co to et him? Was he the reason why she signed the divorce?
Just thinking of it is filling his blood with fire.
The young man backed away when he sensed danger. He replied, "I’m the new owner of that apartnt."
"New owner?" Alaric interjected.
Landon stepped forward and questioned the young man, "What do you an new owner? What happened to the two ladies who lived here yesterday?"
"I don’t know about two ladies, but a woman sold the apartnt," answered the young man.
When he heard this, Landon was not relieved one bit. Not when he realized where this was going. "When did you buy it?"
"This morning. But the apartnt was posted last night." The young man brought out his phone and let them see the post.
Landon stared at the phone screen for a long ti. The young man had no reason to lie. He didn’t know him. If he did, he wouldn’t dare lie to him, even if he had the chance.
Then... this could only an one thing.
She ran away.
Lucy left him.
Landon didn’t want to accept it.
But what was he going to do? Lucy didn’t co to the eting place and refused to et him. And when he ca to the only place he suspected she would be, another person bought it and was already living in it.
Had he not waited in the park and co sooner to the apartnt, would he see her?
Maybe if he hadn’t gone ho last night, he would’ve t her.
No, if he had left Yvonne’s side and stayed with Lucy instead, would she have not found the divorce agreent and left?
Landon’s mind swirled with all the possibilities that could have happened if he had taken a different action.
"Well, I’ll go inside now. The young man passed Landon by. His key appeared in his hand, and as he was about to plunge it into the keyhole, he turned around. Then he said, "When I moved in earlier, I found sothing tucked under the couch. I think the woman left it behind. Wait here..."
Landon was about to stop the young man. Whatever was left behind, he was sure it was sothing Lucy’s best friend owned. He didn’t care about that.
Rather than stay there and wait, Landon wanted to search for Lucy. He could go to her previous ho, where her mother lived with her. Or at the dorm she used to stay when she was still in college.
But he knew those two places were no longer a place for Lucy could stay in.
Lucy’s previous ho was demolished and rebuilt into a comrcial building. As for the dormitory, she was no longer a student at the local university, and the school must have had soone else occupy it.
The young man ca back and stood by the door.
Landon’s eyes went past the young man and looked behind him.
A part of him hoped the young man had lied to him. However, the interior of the apartnt was slightly different. Signs of having just moved in were scattered around.
"Take this," the young man held out his hand. "I thought it was trash, but... I saw a bit of the words written in it. It’s strange, though. The apartnt owner is Vanessa. But the na written on this paper is Lucy."
Landon initially wanted to turn around. What Vanessa left behind was irrelevant to him.
But the mont Lucy’s na was called, Landon reacted imdiately.
He looked down at the young man’s hand.
In his hand was a folded paper.
It was slightly crumpled on the edges. But Landon took it from the young man.
His hand shook as he thought Lucy had left him a letter. Maybe she left a clue of her current whereabouts. Or a farewell letter for him to read.
Whichever didn’t make him happy.
He didn’t want a letter. He wanted Lucy.
Still, his curiosity won over him.
And Landon had never regretted sothing so fast.
The letter showed him what he had feared the most.
