Chapter 843: Chapter 853: Boating on the Lake Together
"How have you been?" Kenh Brown asked.
"Pretty good," Sienna Johnson replied perfunctorily.
"But how did you get so thin?" Kenh looked unconvinced by Sienna’s words.
"The morning sickness was too severe, I couldn’t eat, so I lost weight." Sienna brushed it off, not wanting to discuss the topic.
Feelings are like drinking water; only you know if it’s hot or cold. Outsiders can hardly see it.
Anyway, she felt happy being with Adrian Desmond.
The test was quick, it ended in about half an hour. Adrian walked out, pressing a cotton swab on the needle mark on his arm.
Sienna hurried to stand up and went over, "How is it?"
"My blood was already low, and now they’ve drawn several more tubes!" Adrian complained.
"I’ll go home and make you some blood-nourishing soup!"
Reggie Dewey also came out. Sienna asked, "How is it?"
"We’ve collected the blood samples. We still need to conduct sample analysis. The results should be out by tonight," Reggie said.
"Let me know as soon as the results are out."
"Sure."
Sienna was preoccupied with Adrian’s poisoning issue and wasn’t in the mood for socializing, so she left Kenh to Adolph Desmond to entertain him.
All day, Sienna’s mind was unsettled. While making blood-nourishing soup for Adrian, she accidentally added too much salt. Adrian didn’t complain; he just diluted it with extra water and drank it anyway.
Practicing calligraphy can calm the mind. Sienna was practicing in Adrian’s study. She ruined several sheets in a row.
"Sienna Johnson, can you stop being like this? I’m just poisoned, not terminally ill," Adrian couldn’t help but say, looking at the wasted paper in the trash bin.
"Adrian, if you want me to live a few more years, take care of yourself. I feel like if this continues, my heart will have issues," Sienna said anxiously.
Adrian took the brush from her hand, picked her up, and walked outside.
Sienna wrapped her arms around his neck, "Where are you taking me?"
"Let’s go see the lotus flowers."
Sienna didn’t mind. She wasn’t keen on staying in the room overthinking things.
Along the way, they passed many servants who were used to seeing them so affectionate. After greeting them, the servants continued with their work.
Adrian walked steadily, passing through the backyard filled with blooming flowers and the corridor, arriving at the edge of Mirror Lake. Mirror Lake was the size of a football field, with lotus flowers occupying a third of it.
At the lakeside, Adrian put Sienna down.
By the riverside, there was a wooden boat that Adrian had personally made for their daughter. It was painted in vibrant colors by Adrian and their daughter together, while Sienna watched from the pavilion.
They were silly, not even finding shade, painting the boat under the blazing sun.
"I miss Curly," Sienna suddenly said.
"And when I suggested bringing her back, you weren’t willing?"
"We’re overwhelmed right now, barely able to take care of ourselves. How can I feel at ease bringing her back?"
Adrian comforted her, "When all this chaotic stuff is over, we’ll bring her back."
"Adrian, once all this is over, I plan to return to Sileria City," Sienna brought up the old topic again, looking seriously at Adrian, who didn’t respond.
He held Sienna’s hand and helped her onto the boat, then pushed the boat into the lake and got on.
His strong arms rowed the boat toward the center of the lake.
The sun was still scorching. Sienna, feeling a bit lethargic from the sun, complained, "If I’d known we were going boating, I would’ve brought a hat. I’m getting sunburned."
Adrian glanced around, rowed the boat into the lotus cluster, picked a large lotus leaf, and placed it on Sienna’s head.
"How about this hat?"
Sienna laughed, revealing her white teeth, "I used to play like this when I was young."
Sienna had Adrian pick another lotus leaf, filled it with lake water, and played with it.
"I used to catch spring water with lotus leaves in the mountains."
"..."
"Adrian, what were you like as a child?"
"Survival, making money!" Four words summed up Adrian’s childhood. Sienna’s maternal instinct kicked in, "You had it rough, didn’t you?"
"Didn’t sleep well last night, did you? Get some sleep."
Adrian didn’t want to discuss his childhood with Sienna. He had no childhood. After his parents died, his childhood was filled with violence!
"Sleep here?"
"Didn’t you say the lotus calms the mind? With the fragrance of lotus flowers all around, you should be able to sleep."
Adrian picked more lotus flowers for Sienna, and if she hadn’t stopped him, he probably would’ve filled the boat.
"Stay with me."
"Alright."
Sienna placed two lotus leaves under her head, covered both of their faces with two more, snuggled in Adrian’s arms, and, surrounded by the fragrance of lotus flowers, soon fell asleep.
The boat, with no one steering, drifted gently across the lake with the wind...
Adrian didn’t expect to fall asleep too. When they woke up, the sky was full of stars.
Sienna removed the dried lotus leaf from her face, looked up at the starry sky, blinked a few times, and was momentarily confused.
"Awake?"
Adrian’s voice sounded in her ear, jolting Sienna’s memory, "It’s dark, the test results are out. Quick, let’s find Reggie and the others."
Sienna stirred so abruptly that the boat rocked violently, and if Adrian hadn’t steadied it, they might have fallen into the lake.
"Be careful!"
Sienna then remembered what happened earlier in the day and realized they were on a boat.
"How did I sleep so long?"
"You’ve been too tired lately."
Adrian took out the oar and rowed towards the shore.
As soon as they got ashore, Sienna rushed straight to where Reggie and the others were staying. Her steps were hurried, and her heart was pounding; she couldn’t hear Adrian several times when he spoke to her.
"Calm down, Sienna," Adrian couldn’t help but say.
"How can I not be nervous?"
Sienna walked in and saw Reggie and the others still in the laboratory. She knocked on the door but didn’t go in.
Reggie, in a white coat, came out and saw an anxious Sienna, saying, "The test results came out."
"Poisoned?"
"Yes!"
"What kind of poison?" Sienna’s palms were sweaty as she stared intently at Reggie’s mouth, fearing he might say something terrible.
"We also found ****** and arsenic... there should be other components in his blood sample, but with our current expertise, Russell Austin and I couldn’t identify it."
Sienna wasn’t sure she understood, "How could it not be identified?"
"It’s likely synthetic toxins!"
