"-needs absolute rest. Can be stress and even habits...she’s awake. Miss, how do you feel? Can you talk to us?"
The man dressed in plain clothes asked as he rushed toward . He had an ordinary face but the dark circles under his eyes told that he was not well-rested. I wondered if I was the reason he looked like that.
The thought made guilt twist in my stomach.
"I...am fine. I think...cough...sorry, my throat..."
"Here, have so water."
Damian told as he handed a glass of water. He was helping out a lot, but things between us felt a little strained. The space between us felt like a punishnt neither of us understood.
I had thought a little about what to do with our relationship and ca to the conclusion that it would be for the best not to get too close to him. I did not want his future fiancée to get the wrong idea about us.
Even thinking about her made my chest hurt.
So I hesitantly took the water from him. But as soon as our hands brushed against each other, I dropped the glass, causing the blanket to get wet.
The small accident felt loud enough to shatter the whole room.
"I-I am sorry—"
I tried to apologize but Damian let out a tired sigh that made my heart drop. I didn’t expect his reaction to actually cause physical pain.
’I-Is Damian tired of already? Is that his way of telling to pull myself together?’
Once again, his actions were making think too much. Damian pulled the covers off and I let out a squeak. Before I could ask him what he was doing, he brought back fresh covers for to have.
The doctor kept looking at us the whole ti, but he did not say much. Once he was finished giving the treatnt, he turned toward Damian.
"Boss, as I told you before—the patient needs absolute bed rest. Try not to tire her out or make her stressed. Please call anyti you need help. I should take my leave now."
The doctor made his quick escape and both Damian and I exchanged a nervous glance before we looked away. It was pathetic how we couldn’t even hold eye contact anymore.
Damian turned toward first before he decided to ask his question.
"So...are you feeling better now?"
"Yeah, I am..."
Another awkward silence followed where we did not know what to say to each other. I did think about asking him about his other fiancée. But my throat closed up every ti I tried to bring that topic up.
I was scared of the answer.
In the end, I decided to bottle this issue up for later...or maybe never.
A day passed and I started to get better.
Damian turned out to be a far more efficient host at taking care of a sick person than I expected. He personally brought my als and kept company. He also personally checked my temperature.
His quiet care made it even harder not to want him.
But it was also clear to that he did not know what to do with his hands. They kept twitching, reaching for and then being pulled back.
He was fighting sothing but I could not help him with it.
It was almost cute...if it did not feel so torturous.
Every ti Damian’s hand leaned toward , I wanted to grab it and hold it. But just when I gathered the courage to do that, he pulled back. It almost felt like he was playing a tug of war with .
I always lost because I always let go first.
I needed a distraction from all of this ss and so ti to think alone.
Thankfully, I got the chance when Damian’s secretary (the mafia one) arrived. Jason looked as cheerful as ever as he ca inside my room to look for his boss.
"Boss, I am here with the report. But I think you might need to head out yourself to resolve this conflict. Both sides are not willing to listen to us."
Damian sighed before he grabbed his coat. It seed as if he was going to head out. But before he went, he turned to look at .
"Jenna, I will be back soon. If you need anything, then tell Jason...actually, just call . Yeah, that will be better."
Damian sounded just a little bit...jealous as he told to call him. And then he went out, leaving and Jason all alone.
The room felt cold without him, causing to shiver.
I did not know what to say to Jason, but I felt like this was my best (and only) chance to ask him about Damian and Lisa...as well as their relationship.
"Miss, do you want to ask ? I can see you glaring at ."
Jason asked, not missing a single beat. I tried my best to hide my gasp of surprise, but it was a tough call.
I wanted answers but I also feared them.
"Ahm, I just wanted to ask you a few questions. Do you know who Lisa is? She said sothing about a fiancée..."
Jason’s eyes widened and the grin on his face faltered. The air in the room turned tense as he answered .
I braced myself.
"Miss Lisa is...our young mistress and Boss’s younger sister. The fiancée she talked about must be Miss Jennifer...her best friend who has been in love with Boss for a long ti. Even their family joked about them getting married. But my boss always refused..."
Jason stopped to look at .
"Since your boss and you are partners on paper, you should be careful as well, Miss Jenna.
You have been lucky so far as to not run into anyone from our side of the world. But it is only a matter of ti. I would advise you to quickly finish your role and break your ties with my boss before you lose your life."
I felt a shiver go down my spine at Jason’s warning. I could tell that he was completely serious when he told all this.
Even his smile was gone.
And I also knew that I should listen to his warning and back down. But for so reason, my heart refused to listen to him.
It insisted that there was still a chance for and Damian to be together even after the revenge was over...
Hope was cruel, but it was the only thing I had left.
’I should not feel hopeful over such a thing. Damian will not be happy if he has by his side. He needs soone who can understand him...’
And while I could be that person, I was not sure Damian wanted to be.
Wanting him wasn’t the problem—being wanted back was.
But at least I had cleared up one thing—Damian was not cheating on soone else when he was with . That eased a huge burden off my mind.
It didn’t fix anything, but it made breathing a little easier.
’I am not the sa kind of scum Rose is. I will not take away soone else’s man...’
