Camilla

I don’t know how many days have passed since the last ti I was in my right mind. Ti beca irrelevant, and the more I try to focus on its passing, the more I get frustrated with how muffled everything is.

He doesn’t co anymore.

Neither does she.

I don’t know if she’s even there still. I can’t leave my bed. The leash of my shock collar has been shortened, so now, I can’t even go past the middle of my room.

He took my chessboard too. Just like always, he takes everything from . All of them do.

All of them.

I haven’t thought about Arthur in a long while. I simply don’t want to. Every ti his image flashes through my feverish mind, my heart collapses, and my only wish is to die as quickly as possible so that, with the Moon Goddess’s forgiveness, I can et my mate in the afterlife.

My mind quakes when I hear a quiet squeak as the door to my room opens slowly. I don’t even bother to turn my head and check who it is––in my current situation, I am not happy with anyone coming here to begin with.

The strong herbal scent hits my nose pretty soon, amplified by the staleness that usually brings my senses no relief, and I know who today’s intruder is.

The old witch.

"Miss Camilla?"

I must admit, for an old hag, she has a nice, soothing voice. If she ca here to talk, I wouldn’t mind listening.

"Miss Camilla," the witch tries again, but I still don’t want to answer her. "We don’t have much ti. I brought a ssage from Miss Kaya."

Well, now I don’t know what to make of it, and yet, even if she is lying, I’d like to hear her say more.

"Yes?" I squeeze the word out, and to my embarrassnt, it cos out in a raspy groan of soone with a clogged throat.

"Miss Kaya has a plan for your escape," the woman whispers, taking a seat at the edge of my bed. "Will you want to hear it out?"

"How is she?" I ask because I genuinely want to know. If she only has a plan for my escape, I fear that it’s because she is in no condition to join .

"She is... well, as good as one can be in her position."

"Is she hurt?"

"Physically?" The witch sighs, and that sound alone makes my heart twist. "Not anymore."

"Get out," I say coldly, sliding upward as I lean against the headboard.

"Miss Camilla, I––"

"I don’t know what the fuck you’re trying to do here, but there is no fucking way I will ever believe that Damien’s snake is here to help . Get out before I claw your eyes out."

"Bishop to C4," she suddenly says, and my eyebrows fly up to my hairline. "Bishop to C4. The active play starts."

"Her last move," I murmur, moving my eyes to the empty desk. "She took the bishop, but she never moved it. So... that’s her move, huh?"

"Alright," I say after a long pause, my eyes narrowed at the witch as I still find it hard to believe her. "What else did she have to say?"

The old hag doesn’t hesitate. Diving her wrinkled, trembling hands inside the pockets of her long robe, she fishes out a few glass vials and a small glass box filled with crimson powder, placing them carefully on the bed next to my feet.

"It might be dangerous, but it’s the only chance we have," she starts explaining, her entire body shaking so violently, I fear she might actually shatter. "Forgive , Miss," she then says, wiping the beads of sweat from her forehead. "This is the first ti I am doing sothing like this. I’ve never... risked anything before."

"Risk?" I ask, getting even more confused the more she talks. "Why start now, then?"

"Because we deserve better," she replies without hesitation, and sothing biting stirs deep inside . "We deserve better than him."

"Go on," I urge her, and the witch seems to get a better hold of herself thanks to my leveled tone.

"Alpha Damien uses Miss Kaya’s blood to create an army of powerful ghouls. Miss Kaya is not a regular wolf––she doesn’t know all the details, but she overheard that her blood is poison to your species while a potent amplifier to other creatures."

She pauses for a mont, pushing one of the vials toward . I pick it up, my eyes narrowing as I examine its contents.

"It’s her blood," the woman explains. "She wants you to drink it."

"She wants to drink poison?" I raise a suspicious brow at her. "And how the fuck is it going to help exactly?"

"Your veins are filled with aconite," she presses on, sowhat more confident than before. "And I brought a universal antidote, which may or may not help as well. It’s not a lot of blood... there is a chance you won’t be hard much."

"I still don’t get it. How am I going to escape by drinking her blood?"

"This blood is supposed to go to the lab. Our plan is flawed, but there is a chance it will still work. So..."

She draws in a deep breath, then locks her eyes on mine, and continues. "I drew Miss Kaya’s blood to take it to the lab and tell Alpha Damien that I think there is a problem with Miss Kaya’s health. Too much aconite is affecting the poignancy of her blood. As I was heading for the first floor, I decided to check up on you because I heard loud cries and thought you were in agony.

As I walked into your room and approached your bed, you attacked , took the blood vial and drank it. You were in delirium, so you couldn’t control what you were doing. That’s how I will tell the story."

I can’t help but let out a scoff. "This is not just flawed––this plan is one giant hole with a little bit of plotting around it."

The witch smiles awkwardly. "If the antidote works, the alpha will want to take you to the lab and try to see why her blood didn’t affect you. As the guards wheel you out of the room, your shock collar will be disabled, which ans you will be able to run. Miss Kaya told you know the way out of here; you can escape."

"What about you?" I ask, still mulling over this whole ridiculous affair. "Do you know how to get out of here?"

"No," she shakes her head. "I was brought here the sa way you were. I am only familiar with this level."

I lower my eyes and take the vial in my right hand. If I agree to do this, I have to be smart about the entire thing.

I need to be alert and ready to fight, which is hard with my wolf suppressed and so weird blood poison running through my veins.

I also need to make sure I am not actually taken to the lab because I need to be able to reach the first level as soon as possible with the limited power I have.

This is going to be crazy.

But who gives a fuck.

"Alright," I finally say, shifting my eyes back to the witch. "Are you ready?"

The woman nods, clutching her hands in front of her stomach as if she’s about to start a prayer. I uncorck the vial and bring it to my lips, taking one last deep breath to set everything in motion.

"Well... bottoms up, then."
