Since I wasn’t soone who liked to boast about my personal love life, it took Duchess Flavia a couple of probing questions to get talking.
“Wow! I have to say that you’ve made so much progress since the last ti that we had our dance lesson together. Congratulations, Mila!” The Duchess congratulated happily when I told her that I managed to confess my love to the prince.
“Thank you so much. I doubt it that I would have had the courage back then to do sothing like this. It ans the world to to hear the prince say that he loves too,” I confess to her shyly.
“This is why I envy all younger people. Always so sweet and so in love!” the duchess said teasingly as she clapped her hands together.
I could sense that she was genuinely happy for Prince Leonard and myself.
“Lady Regina and Prince Florian also have a baby on the way,” I said excitedly.
“Let’s not talk about that until the baby is born, if it even gets born...” the Duchess said darkly before letting out a laugh.
I found her reaction disturbing despite knowing that she wasn’t at all looking forward to the arrival of Prince Florian’s child and that was because she didn’t want Prince Florian to get anywhere near to sitting on the throne as the next king.
“I will pray for the safe delivery of the baby,” I told her reassuringly.
“You don’t have to do that, we should just leave it in faith’s capable hands. I told you before, didn’t I? I’m not looking forward to Florian becoming the next king. I also hate that Regina or whatever and her entire ambitious family,” the Duchess said without hiding her distaste.
“Aren’t you excited to have a grandchild?” I asked curiously.
“Not at all. It would just make feel older,” she replied with widened eyes before letting out a sweet and beautiful laugh.
Once again I was reminded that the duchess had a very unique way of seeing the world.
“I would look forward to you having a child, though,” the duchess said before she winked at .
“Hopefully, I won’t keep you waiting for too long,” I replied while trying to tell myself not to get my hopes up.
...
“I don’t know why it feels like I haven’t seen you for years!” Jessie cried out before she rushed towards and threw her arms around to hug tightly.
“It’s my fault for not stopping by for so long,” I apologized as I looked around the familiar living room in my living quarters.
“I’m so glad that you’re here,” Selena said as she ca out to greet .
We had agreed to et up in my room instead of using Selena’s room because it was bigger. Because she was pregnant with the prince’s child, Selena had been moved to a larger room where she could stay in private. Although the room wasn’t anywhere near as luxurious and complete as the ones that honorable maidens stayed in, it should be comfortable enough for her.
“This place hasn’t changed at all,” I mumbled to myself as I looked around.
“We tried our best to keep things the way that you left it,” Jessie explained.
“Thank you so much for taking care of my room while I’m gone,” I thanked her with a bright smile.
“I’m just doing my job. Who knows? I might be promoted to lady in waiting or sothing when either one of you becos queen,” Jessie said before letting out a joyous laugh.
“I think if any of us becos queen, it would be Selena and not . It seems like her belly is already showing,” I said as I openly eyed Selena’s swollen belly.
“I don’t want to think too far into the future. Right now it feels I should focus on the baby growing inside ,” Selena said with a shy smile.
“You’re right about that. There is nothing more important than your health and the growth of your child,” I quickly agreed.
I was certain that the battle for the throne was far from over, and that worrying about the politics would only stress out Selena. Ever since that day in the throne room, I had never witnessed Selena and Prince Darius together again. Although I didn’t want to cause her any distress, I couldn’t help myself from asking about the whereabouts of the prince.
“Does Prince Darius visit you often?” I asked.
“He does visit from ti to ti. You know, once in a while,” Selena replied in a small voice.
I glanced over to Jessie when I felt that her answer didn’t sound so convincing. Jessie rolled her eyes at before letting out a long sigh.
“If once in a while ans once a week, then yes, he does visit once in a while,” Jessie said sarcastically.
“I’m sure that Prince Darius has a lot of work keeping him busy,” I quickly said to reassure Selena.
I felt like I knew so little about their relationship apart from the fact that it didn’t start in a very normal way. I had no idea what their relationship was like now, why the prince seed to care so little about my dear friend although she was pregnant with his child. After sharing so small talk, I had to excuse myself because I needed to head back to have dinner with Prince Leonard.
“I’ll visit you again very soon,” I said as I bid farewell to my friends.
...
“It’s like I’ve been saying, you need to do sothing about it soon before father or the committee mbers start to take action,” Prince Darius said quite sternly.
“I’ll just ignore them. They need to learn to leave us alone,” Prince Leonard replied passively.
I froze in my tracks when I realized that I had just walked in on the brothers’ conversation without aning to. I made a promise with Prince Leonard to return to have dinner with him at his palace and here I was to keep my promise.
