"He...He did all of that?" the moon goddess’s eyes glistened with tears as she let out a relieved laughter. "And here I was thinking that my child hates . I’ve spent every waking mont, looking for ways to make him even like ... but to think that he cares about these little things and ..." she trailed off as silverly tears cascaded down her cheeks.
I had wanted to rant about my life because that was the first thing I was going to do if I ever died. I wanted to ask the moon goddess if she had it in for or if it was sothing I did in my previous life or my parents for her to make suffer so much but looking at her now... I couldn’t believe she was the one in need of comfort.
Slowly, I let my hands rest on her shoulders as I tapped her comfortingly, wondering if she was ever going to stop. After what seed like an eternity, she finally looked up. There was a smile on her face as she grasped my hand.
"You’re a mother too, Selene..." she said looking at earnestly "Do you have any tricks or tips you could share with . I know it must be too late but I can’t give up now. I have to keep trying to see if I can win him over. So, Tell anything, I promise I’d do it... except of course changing your fate... I cannot do that,".
"As if!" I scoffed removing my hands from her gasp "Since we’re talking about changing fates, why did you let end with the most rotten of fates? Do you have any idea how much I hate being ? couldn’t you have given another path and why am I supposed to suffer and die when it was clearly...".
"Because it was you who left first, Selene," She said briskly "I’ll make ti for any of your questions but I have to hurry back soon and I need your help. Could you please help out there once? I’ll return the favour... I’ll grant you anything you need, just make sure it’s not you asking to spare your life because I cannot,".
"Fine!" I rolled my eyes "But keep to your word!"
To which she nodded staring at like a child expecting candy. I didn’t even know what to make of the situation. To think that one day, I’d be giving mommy advice to the moon goddess made wonder how she was able to rule us all. If she didn’t know all of these things then how has she been able to deal with us?
"Selene!" she sighed "I can hear your thoughts. Of course, you all are my children but Kragen is the child I carried. I felt the pang of motherhood... the pain... had to stay awake all night most days and I had to do all of these in hiding," she sighed sadly. "I am not allowed to have luxuries like you creatures. I cannot ever beco a mother but when I got pregnant with him... I broke a lot of laws just to keep him and by the ti anyone could know, he was already grown and with his father... so... I don’t know how to be a mother, Selene...".
She trailed off, her hands wringing with anxiety.
"It’s easy with you creatures," she continued "If you want wealth, you ask for it. If it’s a child or fortune or whatever... You ask for it but Kragen... is complicated. I don’t know what he wants. What he likes, the kind of things he does. All I can see is his big heart and how kind he is and how he constantly makes an effort to rebel against and put in trouble..." We shared a known smile at that last sentence "But I don’t know my child and I’m so ashad to say that,".
"Does... does he know?" I asked quietly watching as pain flickered in her eyes for a few minutes. Then she straightened, giving an almost cold glance.
"The tips, Selene..." she said.
"Fine!" I huffed and started. "You could cook him his favourite al. He doesn’t eat any al cooked by a woman because he often whines about never eating his mother’s al so he doesn’t think he should eat any woman’s. He likes pumpkin porridge with lots of herbs in it... the weirdest of the punch and he’s always dread of eating this in front of a waterfall... with the sun behind his back,".
"Kragen... said all of this?" her eyes widened with shock "Are you sure? He doesn’t sound like the kind of person who would want that,".
"Of course, he doesn’t sound because he has to go around all day acting like he’s a god when he’s around you or anyone from your world but the Kragen I’ve t.... The one that has shown himself to ... loves to be around nature. How did you think he learnt about healing? He was born to be a killer... but he learnt about healing by spending ti with it... he also loves fire...".
"Fire?" the moon goddess exclaid, the corners of her eyes crinkling with smiles "How on earth would soone like fire?"
"It’s beautiful," I couldn’t hold in the smile at the shock on her face "At least that’s what he says. Once, he told he started a fire at a village and was so enticed by its beauty that he forgot and let it burn into their farmlands. He had to work for a few months as a way to repay them. But these days, he’s found that the setting sun on the eve of every full moon shines as bright as fire and he doesn’t miss them for anything. I know it’s also his biggest dream to share it one day with his family,".
"Really?" the moon goddess whispered as tears welled in her eyes again.
"Yes!" I nodded "He’s also fascinated with how our parents fuss about us getting married to the right families and making the right alliance. He wishes that will be done to him. He wishes he’d co to the house one day and see a line of won and his parents... interviewing them sort of to know if they’re a perfect fit for him. He loves to sit in the quiet and listen to nothing with his head on my legs, just staring at the sky...".
I cleared my throat when I saw the moon goddess staring at sceptically.
"That was from a long ago!" I said "When I had just given birth to the girls and would spend nearly 5 hours trying to get them to sleep. Afterwards, we would just go outside at stare at the sky until we doze off. Don’t worry, I am not inappropriate with your son. I have enough worries as it is...".
"I didn’t ask!" she said.
"Anyways... for Kragen... he doesn’t like a lot of things... he likes things because they remind him of soone or sothing or a mory. So, he’s easy to deal with... he just likes simple things and he wishes that his father doesn’t have to pretend so much to be strong. Sothing about catching him severally as a child sobbing looking at your picture,".
The moon goddess covered her mouth as if she was afraid that she would make a sound from crying.
"I know there’s more to it than I am seeing now," I continued confidently "But if there’s anything you need to tell, Kragen... you should tell him now. Believe , he can handle anything and the only reason why he’s afraid of letting people go is because of the pain,".
"The pain?" she asked.
"Yes!" I nodded "He grew up a lonely boy who watched his father turn himself into an emotional wreck every night and then act like he was fine the next morning. As a child, he knew that his father had to leave you and he thinks that he’s the reason. He once told that if he hadn’t been born, then perhaps you and his father would be happy,".
"So that is why he cannot bear to let people die..." she murmured, sniffing back tears.
"Yes!" I nodded. "He’s worried that if Noah dies... that it would ss up and I might be sad for a long ti... just like how both of you left him to fend for himself as a child, he feels responsible to us. He feels that you don’t do enough and he’s trying to make up for it. That’s why he won’t let that old Alpha die because he feels his son is not prepared emotionally to deal with his death... that’s why he lets us stay way longer than we’re supposed to. He’s making sure we don’t end up like him,".
The moon goddess made a frustrated sound as she sobbed.
"So, my request... the only thing I’m asking from you is let tell him about my death," I said swallowing hard as tears gathered at the corner of my eyes. "It’ll be so confusing to him that day if I die. He would try to keep alive... it’ll confuse him... so please, give a few minutes with him on my deathbed... let explain to him and ask for his forgiveness before I go... He’s my one and only true friend... so please!"
