The bright, colorful lights of the amusent park twinkled like stars in the night, reflecting off the glossy pavent wet from a recent drizzle.

The air was thick with the mingling scents of caral popcorn, fried dough, and the artificial sweetness of cotton candy.

Laughter and excited screams filled the atmosphere, blending with the constant hum of machinery.

Hugo charged into this establishnt like a maniac, his hand firmly wrapped around hers as he practically dragged her forward.

Emily's steps were hesitant, her fingers twitching slightly in his grasp. It wasn't that she didn't want to be here—no, the flashing lights and the thrill in the air sent a pleasant shiver of excitent through her.

But the way Hugo was marching forward with such determined enthusiasm made her nervous.

His eyes glead with a kind of mischievous delight that could only an one thing—he was up to sothing.

And knowing Hugo, that "sothing" was bound to be ridiculous, over-the-top, and probably life-threatening.

Hugo, on the other hand, was practically vibrating with excitent.

He had one mission and one mission only: to find an activity so thrilling, so heart-pounding, so utterly terrifying that Emily would have no choice but to cling to him for dear life.

His mind buzzed with possibilities. A roller coaster? No, too predictable. A spinning ride? Eh, not enough intimacy. The drop tower?

Tempting, but it lacked the right atmosphere. Then, like a divine revelation, it struck him—a haunted house!

A wicked grin spread across Hugo's face as he envisioned the perfect scenario.

He could see it so clearly in his mind: Emily clutching his arm, her body pressed against his as they tiptoed through the eerie corridors.

A jump scare would make her shriek and bury her face in his chest, and in the heat of the mont, he would gently tilt her chin up, gaze into her wide, frightened eyes, and—BAM!

A stolen kiss. It would be so romantic, so cinematic, so... utterly perfect. He nearly let out an evil chuckle but stopped himself just in ti. He had to play it cool!

Turning to Emily with a devilish glint in his eyes, he said, "Hey, let's do sothing fun. Sothing thrilling."

Emily narrowed her eyes at him suspiciously. "Define 'thrilling.'"

Hugo gestured dramatically toward a nearby attraction, where a flickering neon sign read: The House of Nightmares.

The entrance was adorned with rusted iron gates, fake cobwebs, and an animatronic skeleton that occasionally lurched forward with a rattling laugh.

A sign by the entrance read, Not for the faint of heart!

Emily crossed her arms. "A haunted house? Really?"

Hugo nodded eagerly, bouncing on the balls of his feet. "It'll be amazing! Creepy atmosphere, unexpected scares, and best of all…"

He waggled his eyebrows. "You'll totally have to hold onto for safety."

Emily snorted. "Oh, will I?"

"Of course," Hugo said, feigning nonchalance while inwardly patting himself on the back for his genius.

He quickly stepped forward and paid the fee, pleased to see that there wasn't much of a line.

Within minutes, the two of them were standing at the entrance, peering into the darkened hallway beyond.

A low, eerie fog drifted from the doorway, and distant whispers echoed from unseen speakers.

Emily let out a sigh, shaking her head. "Alright, fine. But if I die, I'm haunting you first."

Hugo smirked. "Fair deal."

The doors creaked open, and the two stepped inside.

The mont they entered, the heavy doors slamd shut behind them with a loud BANG! Hugo jumped about a foot in the air, letting out a noise that was definitely not manly.

Emily, however, barely flinched. She tilted her head, unimpressed.

The room was shrouded in thick darkness, with only dim, flickering lanterns casting eerie shadows on the walls.

The air slled of damp wood and sothing vaguely tallic, probably an attempt to simulate the scent of old blood.

Ahead of them, a narrow corridor twisted into darkness, with occasional groaning sounds filtering through hidden speakers.

Hugo swallowed. Okay, maybe this was creepier than he expected.

He cleared his throat, forcing a casual chuckle. "Alright, stay close to , Emily. I'll protect you."

Emily raised an eyebrow. "Uh-huh."

They moved forward, the wooden floorboards creaking beneath their feet.

A sinister voice whispered unintelligible words from the shadows, sending a faint shiver down Hugo's spine. He shook it off. 'No big deal. It's all just special effects.'

Then, without warning, a hand shot out from a hole in the wall!

"AHHHH!!"

Hugo shrieked like a banshee, throwing himself backward so hard he nearly knocked Emily over.

She, however, barely blinked, casually stepping around him as he scrambled to his feet, pale-faced and shaking.

"Are you serious?" she deadpanned.

Hugo let out a nervous laugh, brushing imaginary dust off his shirt. "Pfft. That was just… unexpected. That's all."

They continued forward, deeper into the haunted house. The walls seed to close in around them, and the occasional moan of ghostly figures filled the air.

A figure in tattered robes drifted toward them, arms outstretched.

"OH MY GOSH, IT'S FLOATING!!" Hugo screeched, clutching Emily's arm like a lifeline.

Emily sighed, stepping in front of him. "It's on wheels, Hugo."

The "ghost" rolled past them with a chanical whir, completely ruining the illusion. Hugo let out a sheepish cough. "I knew that."

A few monts later, a sudden shriek erupted from a hidden speaker, and the walls trembled violently.

Hugo let out another high-pitched scream and instinctively threw his arms around Emily, using her as a human shield.

Emily stopped walking.

Slowly, she turned her head to stare at Hugo, who was now clinging to her like a terrified koala. Her expression was unreadable.

"Hugo."

"Y-yeah?"

"What are you doing?"

"…Protecting you?" he tried weakly.

Emily exhaled through her nose, looking up at the ceiling as if summoning patience from the heavens.

Then, without warning, she delivered a swift, precise kick to Hugo's shin.

"OW!!" Hugo yelped, hopping on one foot as he clutched his leg. "What was that for?!"

Emily rolled her eyes. "For being the biggest scaredy-cat in existence."

"I am NOT a scaredy-cat!" Hugo protested, crossing his arms. "I'm just, you know, highly alert to potential threats."

Emily smirked. "Mmhmm. Sure."

They reached the final hallway, where a dramatic red glow pulsed from the walls. The exit was in sight. Just a few more steps, and they would be free—

Then, out of nowhere, a monstrous figure burst through the wall, screaming at full volu.

Hugo absolutely lost it.

He let out a bloodcurdling scream so loud it probably startled the employees outside. Without thinking, he bolted forward, completely abandoning Emily as he made a break for the exit.

Emily stood frozen for a mont, watching in stunned silence as Hugo disappeared into the night, still screaming.
