The living room was silent, save for the sound of two grown n standing in their boxers and staring at the door that had just slamd shut.
Actually there was no sound, but their expressions alone were portraying so loud emotions.
Hugo's face was a mask of utter disbelief, while Collins' eyes held the kind of despair usually reserved for war movies.
Both stared at the door that had betrayed them, their faces a blend of shock, despair, and pure disbelief.
After a long, drawn out pause, Hugo finally broke the silence.
"I can't believe this," he muttered, his voice low and shaky. "That little demon did it again."
His voice was low and full of unconcealed venom. To think the target of such hate was only a kid...
Collins let out a slow exhale, his arms crossed as he glared at the door. "Two tis. TWO! I don't even know how it's possible. This kid… he's like the universe's personal cock blocking agent. Such scary talent..."
"A talent for cock blocking," Hugo growled, clenching his fists. "He's not a kid. He's an assassin. Sent to destroy our happiness. A sniper taking us out from miles away!"
Collins looked at him, his face serious. "You think he has a list? Like, he sits in his room, plotting ways to ss with us? Step one: wait until Hugo and Collins are about to have the night of their lives. Step two: call with an 'ergency.' Step three: laugh maniacally while eating cookies."
Hugo's eyes narrowed as he started pacing. "I should call Dirtydew."
"Dirtydew?" Collins asked, tilting his head like he hadn't heard the na in years.
"Yes, Dirtydew. My old gang buddy," Hugo said, his hands waving dramatically. "He owes a favour. I'll ask him to find that kid and teach him a lesson. Maybe shake him up a little. Teach him so respect!"
Collins frowned. "You want to call your gangster friend to track down a 12 year old?"
"Yes!" Hugo snapped. "That's how far he's pushed ! I can't let him win, Collins. Not tonight!"
Collins sighed, flopping onto the couch. "Well, if Dirtydew can scare him into never picking up a phone again, I'll chip in for gas money."
Hugo stopped pacing and turned to Collins. "How far did you get before he struck?"
Collins groaned, covering his face with his hands. "I was at her spot, man. Her spot! She told she loves it when a guy takes charge, and I thought—'this is it, tonight's the night.' And then… BAM. The phone call. The kid's voice. 'I'm dying, co quick!'"
He paused, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I really like her, man."
Hugo looked over at him, his bloodshot eyes softening slightly. "I get it, bro. I do."
Collins sniffled, reaching for a tissue. "She's different from the other girls, you know? And yet, here I am. No progress. Just… nothing."
Hugo patted him on the shoulder, trying to console him. "You'll get there. Eventually."
Silence.
Collins peeked through his fingers. "What about you?"
Hugo collapsed onto the couch next to him. "I was at the buckle."
"The… buckle?"
"Yes, the buckle!" Hugo cried, throwing his arms up. "Do you know how close that is, Collins? One flick, and I would've been in the Promised Land. But no. Baby Shark starts playing, and everything's ruined!"
Collins winced in sympathy. "That's brutal."
Hugo leaned forward, staring blankly at the coffee table. "What kind of ringtone is Baby Shark for an ergency anyway? Who does that?!" Your journey continues at empire
The two of them sat in shared misery, the weight of their losses sinking in.
Then Hugo glanced at his watch.
9:00 PM.
He froze. His breathing hitched as he realised the clock was ticking. Three hours left.
His thoughts spiralled into a chaotic ss. 'This is it. I'm dood. The System gave a death mission, and I've tried everything. I kissed, I grazed earlobes, I even used the Aura of Alpha! And still, nothing. And now… now I'm going to die because of so evil gremlin and a ringtone. A ringtone!'
Hugo stood up suddenly, his face grim. He turned to Collins and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Bro, if I don't make it… tell Lily sothing for ."
Collins blinked, confused. "Uh… sure. What do you want to tell her?"
Hugo looked off dramatically, his voice heavy with despair. "Tell her… I died fighting. A hero till the end. And that I was only one click away from victory."
Collins frowned. "One click?"
Hugo nodded solemnly. "The buckle, Collins. Never forget the buckle."
Collins stared at him for a mont, then burst into laughter. "You're so dramatic!"
But Hugo wasn't laughing. He walked to his room like a man walking to his own execution. His head hung low, his shoulders slumped, tears glistening in his eyes.
When he got to his bed, he flopped down face first, groaning into his pillow. 'I'm done. That's it. I don't even care anymore. I'm just tired. So tired. I'll let fate take tonight.'
He pulled the duvet over himself, ready to drift off and accept his destiny, when his phone buzzed.
Hugo groaned. "What now?" he muttered, half tempted to throw the phone across the room. He wouldn't be needing it after tonight anyways.
He grabbed it, intending to silence it without even looking. But then he saw the na on the screen.
Lisa.
Hugo frowned. "Lisa?"
Curiosity got the better of him, and he opened the ssage. His eyes scanned the text, and with each word, they widened further.
He sat up straight, his duvet falling to the floor. His jaw dropped, and his heart started racing.
The screen's glow lit up his shocked face as he read the ssage again, just to be sure.
Cliffhanger.
