Chapter 653: A New Choice
TL: Rui88
In an inn in Lakeheart Town, Mariana stared blankly out the window, lost in thought.
A soft knock sounded on the door.
“Co in.”
“Mother.”
Nathan cautiously pushed the door open and entered.
Mariana looked at him, “How are Ordennel and Denson?”
Nathan sighed, “They are still in a coma.”
He really didn’t understand what had happened, and besides…
Nathan hesitated again and again, as if he had sothing to say but couldn’t get it out.
Mariana frowned, “What is it?”
“On that day in the church, I saw… you aid your gesture at Ordennel, so… was it you who did it?”
Mariana smiled slightly, “Are you suspecting that I was the one who turned them into this?”
“Uh… yes.” Nathan nodded.
Mariana shook her head, “Then you have wronged your mother. Ordennel and Denson brought this entirely upon themselves.”
Nathan said incredulously, “You an they suffered a magical backlash? Denson, I can understand, but with Master Ordennel’s cultivation, facing such a young man, it’s impossible to imagine.”
Mariana was silent for a while. In fact, she also found it incredible that Ordennel, who had been imrsed in spiritual magic all his life, had stumbled, and it was a big stumble.
“One can only say… that magic is always an aweso and mysterious thing. We cannot be so arrogant as to think that we can completely control it,” she said.
“But…” Nathan persisted, “Even if it wasn’t because of you, mother, you did target Ordennel at that ti, didn’t you?”
“Alas…” Mariana sighed, “Do you rember what I said to you at Horn Bay? The Grayman family of Northwest Bay has shown us kindness.”
“Mother,” Nathan said with a frown, “I believe that personal grievances should not be placed above the overall cause of spellcasters.”
Mariana imdiately rebuked him sternly, “Your life was given by the Graymans!”
Was it that serious?
Nathan was shocked. It seed that before he could rember, his mother and his younger self must have encountered a great crisis in Northwest Bay.
“Alright.”
Although Nathan still didn’t feel much for the Grayman family in his heart, after all, he had no mory of this family in his mind, he was very considerate of his mother’s feelings.
“Let’s stop the actions against that Count here. We will find another way for Barnett’s matter. If it really doesn’t work, we won’t look for him anymore. What does his life or death have to do with us?”
Mariana nodded, “We shouldn’t have co here in the first place. Northwest Bay is a peaceful and serene land. She shouldn’t have been disturbed by external disputes.”
Nathan shrugged, noncommittal about her words.
At this mont, another knock ca at the door.
It was Edward. He ca in to report, “Denson has woken up.”
……
The mage Denson stood at the window of the room, his hands clasped behind his back in silence.
His eyes darted around from ti to ti, carefully observing the streets and houses of Lakeheart Town.
In the distance, rows of factory buildings were like neatly arranged boxes, and the chimneys of iron-slting blast furnaces emitted thick black smoke.
“Heh! So the gears have already started turning…”
He muttered so incomprehensible words.
“Denson!” Nathan pushed open the door and gave him a big hug. Mariana and Edward followed him in.
“I say, old brother, you scared to death, collapsing like that without a word.”
Denson responded to his hug a bit stiffly.
“Sorry to have worried you.”
“It’s good that you’re awake!” Nathan released him.
Just as their gazes t, for a fleeting mont, Nathan detected a strange aning in the other’s eyes. It flashed and was gone.
It seed to be a kind of… pity?
It was probably just his eyes playing tricks on him, Nathan thought.
“You were in a coma for three days and three nights!”
Mariana said gravely, “What exactly happened that day? What happened to you and your ntor?”
“Uh…” Denson clutched his head, his face contorting. “As soon as I try to recall that mont, my head starts to throb with pain. I’m sorry, Lady Mariana, I really can’t rember the details of that ti. Perhaps… perhaps there was so flaw in Teacher Ordennel’s arrangent.”
Mariana sighed and glanced at Ordennel, who was still lying on the bed. She wondered when this old man would wake up.
Edward suggested, “Perhaps we should let Denson rest first.”
Mariana agreed, “That’s right, let’s go out first. Denson, if your ntor wakes up, let us know.”
Denson nodded respectfully.
The three of them left.
Denson walked to Ordennel’s bedside and looked at his ntor with a complicated expression.
“My dear ntor, thank you for your teachings all this ti, and even more, thank you… for choosing as your assistant for this spell.”
“Although the spell failed, I… can be said to have been reborn. I am no longer the Denson of the past.”
He said in an extrely sad tone, “Please forgive for making a new choice.”
……
Inside the Lord’s Mansion.
“My Count, you should change your coat.”
Old butler Philip respectfully suggested to Paul.
“Huh? I rember I’ve only worn it for a few days!”
Paul, who had just returned from inspecting the military camp, asked casually.
“Oh, it’s been three days already.”
“Alright, you rember so clearly.”
Paul smiled and began to take off his coat. Just as he was about to hand it to the butler, an object fell out of his coat pocket and landed on the floor with a thud.
Paul picked it up from the floor, stared at it, his brows knitting tighter and tighter.
It was a pebble, completely black.
But three days ago, it should have been white.
He let out a long sigh, the look of ease on his face vanished completely.
“Bring Rubin, Cecil, and Ladi here.”
Half an hour later, the three people Paul had ntioned all arrived in his study.
The black stone lay quietly on the desk.
“Soone cast a spell on you without you knowing?”
Ladi said in astonishnt.
“It’s obvious, isn’t it? The Witch Detection Stone has already proven it!”
Paul’s tone was a bit anxious.
In this world where mysterious powers manifested, soone had secretly cast a spell of unknown effect on him.
My goodness! He wasn’t going to end up like Henry’s older brother…the previous Duke of the Northwest, was he?
The key was, who on earth was it?
Paul was terrified in his heart.
“The group of Horn Bay people in Port Fran shows no abnormalities. Count, have you had contact with any strangers recently?” Cecil asked.
“Strangers? I’ve seen a lot of strangers these past few days. Let think…”
Just as Paul was lost in thought, a guard ca to report.
“A man who calls himself a magician wants to see you.”
“A magician!”
Paul suddenly rembered sothing.
