Chapter 1526: Chapter 64: Siege (34)_4

The fierce conflict that suddenly erupted between the first and second-in-command left the officers present silent and uneasy.

“Bazenaur has already fallen,” Winters heavily tapped the seventh, eighth, and ninth letters in the second row on the table.

Mason rembered, those were three reports from different sources, all confirming thick smoke rising from Bazenaur. The worst possibility was that the city had already been set ablaze.

“But Maplestone City isn’t that easy to lose!” Gessa imdiately retorted.

Winters was clearly well-prepared for this debate, “Maplestone City itself is quite solid, but the fortress is easiest breached from within. If so opportunistic fools inside Maplestone City misjudge the situation and harbor bad intentions, then Maplestone City could be at risk.”

“Isn’t that old ghost Skur still there?” Gessa scolded sternly, “Don’t underestimate Skur klen! When necessary, he too will not hesitate to strike hard.”

“I have no doubts about that,” Winters sighed, “However, the definition of ‘necessary’ is not the sa for General Skur, you, or .

“General Skur will only wait for the opponent to make a mistake before retaliating. But the current situation is, if we wait until the opponent makes a mistake, it will be too late.”

“Kai Morland will also help,” Gessa waved his hand.

“Hard to say,” Winters kept a poker face, “The one I distrust the most is him.”

“Anyway, Kai Morland ultimately isn’t one of those United Provincial folks.”

“True, but he will definitely seize the opportunity to demand conditions and power. Just giving him a seat is already dangerous enough. A single man like him can create so much trouble for us; if we let him raise the stakes again, who knows how much more chaos he will cause!”

Mason listening from the side felt more and more uneasy. Since when did Gessa Adonis speak well of Kai Morland while Winters Montagne threw mud at the latter?

“You bastard! What’s the deal?” Gessa was agitated, “Why are you only speaking my words? When did you beco so pessimistic?”

“I’m only stating facts. Maplestone City is not only the political center of the Newly Reclaid Land but also an economic hub and supply center.” Winters looked at the other officers present, “More importantly, many of the families of those present are now residing in Maplestone City. Therefore, Maplestone City must not suffer any mishap.”

Having won the tacit consent of the officers present, Winters revealed his intentions and challenged Gessa, “You should quickly return to Maplestone City to take charge and ensure the rear is secured. Leave this… to .”

“Oh?” Gessa slowly stood up, “A coup? Force-remove? Trying to sideline ?” His gaze swept across the subordinates by the table, “Did you plan this beforehand and conspire to push out?”

“Yes,” Winters directly admitted.

“Then let you announce the retreat?!” Gessa slamd his fist on the conference table, the sound so loud that the clerks and ssengers outside the tent halted in surprise.

“Bastard!” Gessa roared in fury, his hands trembling, “Do you think I’m soone who can’t bear to lose a battle? Is it up to you to uphold my honor? Do you think I would abandon my subordinates at the last mont of the fight and let others acknowledge my defeat for ? Bastard!”

Everyone present was silent.

Everyone knew that the siege of Kingsfort had reached a point where continuing would be extrely difficult.

Even if ignoring the enemy at the rear and stubbornly pressing on, what good would it do to seize Bishop’s Castle?

There was still a series of batteries, fortresses, and walls waiting.

And the United Provincials could freely wreak havoc in the Newly Reclaid Land before coming to help Kingsfort.

Everyone in the tent understood the principle of “indecision leads to chaos.”

But when it truly cos to the mont of a heroic sacrifice, the feeling is indescribable.

That decision is hard to make.

Most importantly, that responsibility, soone must bear it.

“You are the supre military officer of the New Republic, your honor is the honor of the New Republic Army,” Winters said, neither servile nor overbearing, “Every soldier in the New Army has the responsibility, duty, and right to maintain it.”

“I don’t need anyone to maintain my honor,” Gessa coldly surveyed the people, “nor do I need anyone to issue orders on my behalf.”

He directly nad, “Major Richard Mason!”

“Yes!”

“Take the record.”

“Yes!”

“Effective imdiately, our army abandons the original target of capturing Kingsfort, and officers at all levels should begin preparing for the withdrawal,” Gessa paused silently for a mont, “In this battle, all units fought bravely and steadfastly; all of you demonstrated the noblest qualities and the most admirable courage. The responsibility for the failure of this battle lies solely with the commander-in-chief, Gessa Adonis.”

After Mason finished recording, Gessa took the parchnt, signed his na, and then discarded the quill pen.

“Now we can start discussing how to retreat,” he ordered simply.

Suddenly, the tent flap lifted at one corner, and a clerk lowered his head and handed a letter to Mason.

After reading it, Mason looked up, “The identity of the enemy reinforcents has been confird.”

“Oh,” Gessa raised an eyebrow, “Which corps?”

Mason struggled a bit to utter the word, “[Steadfast].”

The officers in the tent all responded with a low murmur.

“Confird?” soone asked.

“Confird,” Mason furrowed his brow.

[Steadfast], one of the four main corps of the United Provinces Republic Army, nad the National Guard Corps, but in fact, the Permanent Army Corps.
