Within a few years, I earned my father’s trust. My father no longer watched making money all the ti. In just a few years, I beca the child who could earn the most for my father. Those years, my father would praise in front of all the children, and when he was in a good mood, he would let have an extra bowl of rice. I was never scolded or beaten by my father ever again.

I seed to have gotten used to this kind of life—not being beaten or scolded, even getting to eat my fill when my father was happy. In the big city’s trash cans, there was never a shortage of discarded food and clothes, so those years, it seed, I also led a life not worrying about food and clothing.

I noticed the biggest difference between this city and the mountain village because of the appearance of a girl nad Gu Zhilan.

Gu Zhilan lived in a beautiful three-story villa across the street where I begged. The chubby little girl always seed to have soone with her. Every day, as I sat by the street begging for money, I could see her getting in and out of that beautiful house in a little car. I also saw her wearing almost never the sa beautiful little dresses every day.

Many people said she was the Little Princess of that small villa. Everything she ate, wore, and used was the best, regardless of cost.

It was then that I understood, not all daughters are seen as financial burdens by their parents, and not all parents would scold and beat their children like mine did.

Gu Zhilan’s existence almost overturned all my views.

From then on, my life had one more thing, which was observing Gu Zhilan.

I knew she had a father who was a soldier and a particularly beautiful mother. She also had a cousin and two neighbor brothers.

Her cousin would bring her gifts, buy her delicious food, and take her shopping and playing.

Day by day, I paid attention to the life belonging to Gu Zhilan, but I grew more and more envious, even feeling a faint sense of imbalance in my heart. Why was it that Gu Zhilan was so blessed, with so many people treating her well? Why did those excellent parents happen to be Gu Zhilan’s?

I was here begging, looking at the expressions of all the passersby just to have a full al, while Gu Zhilan lived across the street in a small villa, eating foods I would never eat in my entire life, wearing clothes I could never even touch in my lifeti, sleeping in a large house I could never set foot in.

As I watched Gu Zhilan pass by with her cousin and say, "Look, brother Lin, she is so pitiful! Shall we share so snacks with her?"

That was the first ti in my life I had chocolate. The sweet white chocolate lted in my mouth, sweeter and more fragrant than the candies from my hotown. Looking at the candies in her hand, I couldn’t help but think how wonderful it would be if those were mine.

The day after eating the white chocolate Gu Zhilan gave , Gu Zhilan ca toward hugging her piggy bank. Then I watched her shake her piggy bank, gradually filling my empty bowl, and she happily told , "This money is for you, you can buy new clothes and buy many delicious things."

In the end, all the money ended up in my father’s pocket, and Gu Zhilan got a complint from my father too. My father said, "What a kind, lovable, and endearing girl she is, a model of good upbringing from a rich family, so polite and caring."

Of course, I knew how much my father liked this Gu Zhilan, because Gu Zhilan helped him earn a lot more money.
