The gully walls trapped the heat. Smoke pooled against the stone ceiling like inverted fog, thick enough to taste. Eloy’s eyes watered. The orange glow to the north pulsed brighter every minute.

[ DEVIATION SENSE: CAUTION ]

[ SURVIVAL MODE: ACTIVE ]

The minimap was a red-veined ss. Ten signatures ford a loose crescent three hundred ters out, tightening. The fire was a fence. Herd the prey toward the gap. Put them down in the clearing. Aggro radius. Funnel chanic. Kill box. Being on the receiving end sucked.

Isolde stood at the gully’s dead end, fingers pressed flat against the mossy stone. Her silence was focused. Her fingers moved across the stone in short, deliberate strokes. She was mapping it from muscle mory.

Maya sat on a fallen log, satchel clutched to her chest. The ledger pages were in there. Dry. Intact. Four kiloters from the capital and the most valuable paper in the kingdom. Her fan stayed closed. A tell. She was scared.

"There was a passage." Isolde’s voice cut through the crackle of distant burning. "Before the war. My father’s couriers used it."

Maya looked up. "Your father’s."

"Yes."

"And you know where it is."

"I was seven. They didn’t think I was watching." Her fingers found the groove and pressed. "They were wrong."

Eloy wiped his eyes. "How far?"

"Two kiloters. Through the burn zone."

[LMAO_cat]: THROUGH THE FIRE LMAOOO

[coldfront44]: that’s the only gap in the signature ring. they’re funneling them.

[xX_Blademaster_Xx]: @coldfront44 no way. go north around the fire. safer.

[noob_slayer88]: north is where the hunters ARE. did you even look at the minimap

Eloy checked his status. 4% MP. The ANOMALY affinity sat in his core like an unlit fuse. Using it had pinged the network. That’s how they’d found them. That’s why the fire was closing in now instead of tomorrow. Double-edged. Every exploit had a cost.

"We can’t go around," he said, looking at the fire. "They’ll adjust the periter faster than we can move."

Maya’s fan snapped open. The sound was sharp in the smoky air. "You seem certain."

"I am."

"Based on what? Your father’s warnings?" The emphasis was precise. She hadn’t forgotten the lie. She was filing it away, testing its edges.

Eloy t her gaze. "Based on the shape of the fire. Look at it. It’s controlled burn. They’re maintaining lanes." He pointed at the orange glow through the trees. "That gap to the south? They want us to run for it."

Maya’s eyes tracked the smoke column. "The smoke isn’t drifting east. They’re holding the wind line."

Eloy glanced at her. She’d confird it independently. Wind-affinity noble. Of course she could read the air.

Isolde’s hand stopped moving on the stone. "The passage is north."

Silence. The fire roared in the distance.

"Through the burn zone," Maya said, not a question.

"Yes."

[IsoldeSimp47]: PROTECT HER

[ultimate_cult]: She’s literally walking through fire her dad built for her. The symbolism is doing backflips.

[dudefromfloripa]: @ultimate_cult bro what does that even an

Isolde turned from the wall. The smoke made her features soft, indistinct, but her posture was rigid. "I know the way. The fire will have changed the terrain. I need soone to watch for falling timber." She looked at Eloy. "You see things before they happen."

Not exactly. DEVIATION SENSE wasn’t precognition. It was more like pattern recognition. The probability of a threat mapped onto spatial perception. Close enough.

"Yeah," Eloy said. "I can do that."

Maya stood. The satchel went over her shoulder, strap adjusted twice. Nervous habit. "And ?"

"Guard the evidence." Isolde’s voice was flat. "If we die, those pages need to reach soone who can use them."

Maya’s fan snapped shut. The click was louder than the fire. "You’re asking to run if you fall."

"I’m telling you the mission has priority."

Maya’s jaw tightened. The calculation behind her eyes hit a result she didn’t like. "Unacceptable."

"Maya—"

"The Alne wind-oath is not for decoration." She stepped forward. "I pledged against the Dark Lord’s return, and that pledge does not include abandoning allies to burn while I save docunts." Her chin lifted. "We move together, or not at all."

Isolde stared at her. A long mont. The fire crackled. Smoke curled between them.

"Fine." Isolde turned back to the wall. "Stay close. Move when I move. Stop when I stop." Her fingers found the groove again before pressing it.

A chanism clicked. The stone shifted. A seam appeared, vertical, hidden by decades of moss and sedint. The passage behind it was black. Cold air breathed out, carrying the sll of wet stone and old copper. A scent that didn’t belong to the forest above.

[ OBSERVATION: Pre-war architecture detected. Mana signature: NULL. No Inquisition tracking wards present. ]

[speedGoblin_]: that’s a known skip in v1.2

[QuietLurker01]: the symbol on the keystone

Eloy glanced at the stone Isolde had pressed. A symbol, half-worn, carved into the granite. He didn’t recognize it. Not from any route guide as far he could rember. New data. Uncharted territory.

"Through." Isolde was already moving. "Now. Before the fire reaches the entrance."

The passage swallowed them. Darkness cut the smoke. The temperature dropped ten degrees in twenty steps and Eloy’s HUD flickered once, then stabilized.

The walls were too smooth. Too regular. Not natural erosion. Not carved by human hands either. The stone had been shaped by a thod he couldn’t na. Too precise for hand tools.

Maya’s breathing was controlled. asured. Eloy could hear her counting steps under her breath. Mapping the route. Building a ntal model in case they had to flee back this way. Smart.

Isolde moved without hesitation. Left at the first junction. Right at the second. Down a slope that angled into the earth. The air grew colder. The darkness grew absolute.

Eloy’s DEVIATION SENSE pulsed.

[ WARNING: STRUCTURAL INSTABILITY — 40 TERS AHEAD ]

"Stop."

Isolde froze. "What."

"Forty ters. Floor’s compromised. We need to go around or find another route."

Silence. Then Isolde turned left, into a side passage he hadn’t seen. "This way. There’s a cistern. The couriers used it to cross under the river."

The passage widened. The ceiling rose, and then—

Water. Black and still, stretching into the darkness. The cistern was vast. Pillars rose from the surface at regular intervals, pre-war architecture, their capitals lost in shadow above.

The ledger pages. The evidence against Orin. The confession that could break the kingdom’s lie. It was all in Maya’s satchel, and Maya was standing at the water’s edge, calculating sothing behind those sharp eyes.

"We can’t swim across," Maya said. "The pages—"

"We don’t swim." Isolde pointed. "There’s a ledge. Along the left wall. Single file."

Eloy looked. The ledge was narrow. Maybe eighteen inches. Wet stone. Zero margin for error.

[crispyfry99]: WHAT

[LMAO_cat]: PLATFORMING SECTION LMAOOO

[coldfront44]: fall damage is real here. no checkpoints. no respawn.

[404ManaNotFound]: MANA: 4%. LUCK: ???

Eloy’s jaw tightened. The ANOMALY affinity stirred in his core. He could feel it. The network connection it had made. The ping that had brought the hunters. It was connected. Broadcasting, or sothing.

He’d used it to catch a fish. And now ten high-level signatures were burning the forest to find him. The cost of the exploit was the exposure. He needed to sever the connection. Or control it. Or—

Isolde stepped onto the ledge. Her balance was perfect. Centuries of noble carriage training applied to sothing it was never designed for.

Maya followed. Slower. Careful. The satchel pressed tight against her hip.

Eloy went last. The ledge was slick. His right ankle throbbed with each step. The -5% movent speed debuff wasn’t just a number. It was a real penalty.

Halfway across, DEVIATION SENSE scread.

[ DEVIATION SENSE: THREAT — ABOVE ]

Eloy looked up. The pillar to his left shifted. Dust fell. A crack ran through the capital above, splitting shadow into jagged pieces. The fire above was weakening the structure. Heat expanded the stone. The pre-war architecture was holding, for now. But the fire was burning. Spreading. They had maybe an hour before the cistern ceiling started to cave.

"Move faster," Eloy said.

Isolde didn’t argue. She picked up the pace. Maya matched it. The far wall approached. A doorway, dark and rectangular. Beyond it, stairs. Rising.

Isolde pulled herself up onto the landing. Turned. Offered her hand to Maya.

Maya stared at it for one second. Two. Then she took it.

[ Isolde Reichenbach — Affinity: 18.5 / 100 → 19.25 / 100 ]

[ 0.75: trust extended in crisis; shared vulnerability accepted ]

Eloy hauled himself up last. His ankle scread. He ignored it.

The stairs rose. The air grew warr. The smoke returned—thinner now, filtering through cracks in the stone above.

Isolde stopped at a landing. Pressed her palm to another seam. Another click. Another door.

Cold night air hit them like a wall. They were out. Above the burn zone. The fire was below them now, lighting the valley floor orange and red. The ten signatures were down there, circling the gully entrance. Waiting for prey that would never co.

Isolde pointed south. "The Caldera is three days through those foothills."

Maya opened her fan. Closed it. The nervous habit was gone now, replaced by the set of soone who’d made a choice and ant it. "Let’s get walking, then."

Eloy scratched his neck. The minimap ahead was blank. No roads. No settlents. Three days of nothing.

"Yeah," he said. "Okay. Let’s go."

[ OBSERVATION: ANOMALY mana integration at 23%. Network connection persists. Severance not yet available. ]

[ WARNING: INTEGRATION THRESHOLD — 25% — APPROACHING ]

Eloy turned south. Started walking. The fire burned behind them. The hunters searched below. And sowhere in the dark, the network waited for him to reach out again.
