“I forgot to take it off,” she said simply, trying to hide her embarrassnt as she averted her gaze from .
“Forgot to take it off?” I repeated, frowning. 'So she wears that necklace every night and takes it off every morning?' I thought, the idea lingering in my mind.
She glared at . “I put it on last night and forgot to take it off this morning. But that doesn’t an I wear this necklace every night,” she snapped.
Despite her words and the embarrassnt tinging her cheeks, she looked like a dog barking at a criminal, defensive and alert.
“I’m just asking. You don’t need to act like that. Geez,” I said.
A frown creased my forehead as I watched her.
“My father has asked to return to my realm. At least you should be nice to ,” I grumbled, reaching for a boiled egg and popping it into my mouth.
My words seed to hit her harder than I expected.
She fell silent, her earlier defensive posture lting away. A grim expression took over her face.
For a mont, she looked almost vulnerable.
I watched her, the silence stretching between us.
Then I sighed and picked up my tomato juice, inserting a straw into the carton.
My eyes fell on Puriel as I took a slow sip. She was still fiddling with her container, her expression a mixture of contemplation and lingering unease.
“Eat faster. I want to take you out,” I said, breaking the silence. I took another sip of my tomato juice as I watched her reaction.
Her head snapped up, surprise flickering in her eyes.
“Did I hear you wrong?” she repeated, her tone incredulous.
“No. I will take you on a date,” I replied in a relaxed tone, a grin spreading across my face. “Believe , you will like it.”
She blinked, clearly taken aback by my sudden proposal.
For a mont, she seed unsure whether to take seriously or not. Her fingers tightened around her container, and I could see the gears turning in her mind as she processed my words.
“A date,” she said again, as if testing the word. “Why?”
“Why not?” I shrugged, leaning back in my chair. “We’ve spent enough ti fighting and arguing. Maybe it’s ti we try sothing different.”
She frowned, her skepticism evident. “You’re serious?”
“Absolutely,” I said, my grin widening. “I promise it will be a morable one,” I guaranteed.
She looked skeptical, but I could see the curiosity starting to spark in her eyes.
“Where?” she asked, her tone cautious.
“Secret,” I replied, winking at her. “But trust , it’ll be sowhere nice. Sowhere we can actually enjoy ourselves without any interruptions.”
She frowned, clearly not entirely convinced, but I could see she was warming up to the idea. “A surprise, huh?” she muttered, taking another bite of her food.
I nodded, taking another sip of my tomato juice. “Yep. Think of it as an adventure. We’ve both been through a lot lately. A change of scenery could do us good.”
She ate in silence for a few more monts, her expression thoughtful. I could tell she was weighing her options, considering the pros and cons of going along with my spontaneous plan. Finally, she put down her container and sighed.
“Fine,” she said, her tone resigned but curious. “I’ll go with you. But if this turns out to be so kind of prank or trick...”
I held up my hands in mock surrender. “No tricks, no pranks. Just a genuine attempt to do sothing nice for a change.”
She studied for a mont longer before nodding. “Alright then. But you’d better not disappoint .”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” I said, a genuine smile replacing my earlier grin. “Finish up your breakfast, and we’ll head out.”
It wasn’t often that I found myself planning a date, let alone with soone like Puriel. But there was sothing about this realm, about the connections I had made here, that made want to try sothing different. To step out of the shadows and explore what else might be possible.
Once she was done, she stood up, brushing off her clothes. “So, where to?” she asked, a hint of anticipation in her voice.
“You’ll see,” I replied, standing up as well.
Summoning one of my Greed tentacles, I watched as it separated from and fell to the ground. It twitched for a mont before morphing into an exact replica of myself.
Puriel, catching on to my plan, flicked her fingers to create her own double. Light gathered in her palm, coalescing into a figure that took her shape.
I took my ID card from around my neck and placed it around the neck of my double.
I turned to her. “Okay, off we go,” I said, extending my hand to open a portal.
The portal shimred into existence and I stepped through it, leaving our doubles behind.
When we erged, the morning sunlight was dazzlingly bright, a contrast to the controlled lighting of the infirmary. We found ourselves behind a large tree in a children’s playground. The area was empty, as it was still school hours. The playground, with its brightly colored equipnt and soft sand, was bathed in the golden light of the morning sun.
Puriel looked around, her expression a mix of curiosity and amusent. “A playground?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
