Pain!

Headache!

Countless nightmares flooded into his mind, bringing bloody scenes and whispers. Wei Wei sotis felt as if he were on the execution stand, repeatedly enduring tortures that even the fears in nightmares couldn't match. At other tis, he felt as if he were kneeling before an endless sea of blood, looking at a world with no color but crimson, helplessly beating himself and weeping bitterly.

He traveled through one red dream after another, with no end in sight.

He saw strange and fantastic scenes, feeling as if he were in them, yet also as if watching from afar.

A heavy fog seed to linger around him constantly.

Red fog that seed like it would never disperse in ten thousand years, with the sll of blood constantly invading his nostrils.

Countless gazes were watching him, making every pore on his body uncomfortable. But when he suddenly turned to look at those gazes, he only saw broken bodies lying helplessly on both sides. Occasionally, he saw a pair of eyes, but they were already dim, with only the lifeless facial muscles pulling into an upturned corner of the mouth.

Wei Wei walked here, walked on, already very tired, but couldn't see an end.

Sothing seed to be building up in his chest—more and more, almost bursting.

"Tick" "Tock" "Tick" "Tock"

Until a clear yet seemingly very distant clock-ticking sound arose. It ca from deep in the fog, seemingly unreachable, yet the sound was right by his ear, occupying all his hearing and suppressing the endless whispers.

Wei Wei's mood suddenly stabilized strangely, slowly extracting himself from the endless nightmare, feeling the breath of the real world, feeling the solid support of sothing real beneath him. Then, everything in the dream began to fade away quickly, leaving only faint traces that were almost invisible. Slowly opening his eyes, he only saw the bright walls and a dim light bulb.

He had slept with the lights on again all night.

Wei Wei stared blankly for a while, rubbing his temples as he sat up from the sofa and lightly tapping his head.

He had drunk too much.

Who would have thought that Sister Lucky, such a delicate and beautiful woman, would have the capacity of a wine barrel.

No, a wine well.

He had originally intended to get her drunk, but ended up getting drunk himself.

One really can't underestimate any strong career woman—especially the kind who doesn't spare her boss's face...

Carefully recalling what happened yesterday, Wei Wei had even forgotten many details.

Vaguely, he rembered feeling certain that good luck would descend, then driving the sports car around the city, seeming quite impatient, touring the entire city in no ti, but seeing nothing. In the end, he ca back very disappointed, rembering feeling quite frustrated at last, wanting to take off the underwear and return it to Sister Lucky, that big liar...

Thank goodness!

He was usually a very rational person.

Rational even when drunk.

So he didn't do such an impolite thing—he just ca back to sleep.

While reproaching himself for underestimating Sister Lucky's alcohol capacity yesterday, he quickly got up.

Looking at the ti, he was already over an hour late.

This would lead to a serious consequence—missing the team's breakfast!

While changing clothes and washing up, there seed to be so thoughts in his mind, his eyes sweeping toward the door.

He also edged to the window, looking down at the busy street.

He felt slightly disappointed.

There were no signs of soone breaking into the door.

Outside the window, there was also no one sneakily watching him or aiming a sniper rifle at him.

It seems these lucky underwear aren't all that great after all...

Complaining inwardly, Wei Wei entered the bathroom, took a shower with a splash, then threw SpongeBob aside and put on his own neatly folded underwear as usual. Only then did he comfortably change into his clothes. While drying his hair, he walked back to the living room, thinking that apart from disliking the pattern and style, the main concern was that underwear bought from small stalls might fade in color.

Just as he was thinking this, suddenly, a ghastly howl rang out in the room—extrely startling in the quiet space. It was shrill, miserable, eerie, and evil. If it were soone more timid, they might have been scared into a heart attack in an instant.

The piercing cries rang out continuously, as if this red room had suddenly turned into hell.

Wei Wei turned his head sharply and took a few quick steps.

He picked up his phone: "Hello?"

The mont the piercing howl stopped, Uncle Gun's sowhat anxious voice ca through: "Little Wei, why haven't you co to the team?"

"Huh?"

Wei Wei panicked a bit.

The one ti he was late in the morning in the month since he arrived, the team's senior mber called to urge him?

"Alright, don't co to the office today, co directly to the ntal Sanatorium in District 7..."

"There's an urgent matter, we're waiting for you here."

"..."

"ntal Sanatorium?"

Wei Wei was stunned for a mont—had his true evaluation from the training camp been exposed so quickly?

He quickly put on his jacket and went downstairs, got into Sister Lucky's sports car, floored the accelerator, and drove straight towards District 7.

District 11 is located in the northern part of the city, where the terrain is undulating with several low mountains. The ntal Sanatorium is built halfway up the mountain, with few buildings around, surrounded by green patches; the environnt is quite nice. Wei Wei drove up along the small road, and from afar he could see police cars parked at the entrance of the sanatorium, with people in police uniforms guarding the door. He imdiately realized sothing had happened, and they weren't here to admit him.

If they wanted to admit him, they would at least send an action team, right?

That's how the instructor did it back then...

...

"Mr. Wei from the Environntal Protection Office? Please follow ."

At the entrance, a young lady in a white nurse uniform was waiting.

Seeing Wei Wei arrive in such a flashy car, her pupils flickered slightly, but she professionally hid the surprise on her face. After confirming his identity, she stepped forward to shake his hand, then imdiately led him into a building.

They went straight to the second-floor corridor, and from afar they could see Captain Ouyang, Uncle Gun, and a group of people in white coats, as well as soone wearing a high-ranking police inspector armband—all standing in front of a room, their faces extrely solemn, with traces of confusion. Realizing the problem was sowhat serious, Wei Wei hurriedly put on a slightly guilty expression and quickly walked in front of Captain Ouyang, about to stand at attention and salute.

"Captain..."

"..."

But before his hand could be raised, Captain Ouyang grabbed it, anxiously saying: "Small place, what salute... Co quickly and take a look. Have you seen this kind of situation before?"

"..."

"What?"

Wei Wei was brought to the reinforced glass door at the entrance of the ward and peered inside through the small window.

Looking in, he was slightly shocked.

It was called a ward, but it was actually a converted warehouse, with the surrounding walls covered in thick plastic film.

In this not-small warehouse, it seed a bit crowded, with dozens of people either sitting or standing inside. So were wearing patient gowns, while others were still in casual clothes, seemingly brought here in an ergency without ti to change.

At first glance, there were n and won, old and young.

Whether in temperant or dress, they all looked completely different, but what was the sa was their behavior.

Every person had a dazed look in their eyes, moving sluggishly, as if soulless, slowly wandering around the warehouse. They would take a step, then tilt their heads—as if thinking about sothing, but imdiately forgetting what they were thinking about—and continue walking. When they reached the wall, they would gently bump their heads against it. Occasionally, extrely short phrases would be mumbled from their mouths:

"Make big money..."

"Watch the kids..."

"Dropped again..."

"Rich bastard..."

"..."

"What's going on here?"

Wei Wei was sowhat surprised. This looked like a room full of ntal patients, all with uniform symptoms.

"Little Wei, have you seen similar symptoms before?" Captain Ouyang asked Wei Wei in a low voice, his face very serious.

"No."

Wei Wei imdiately shook his head: How would he have seen this? He wasn't that kind of person.

"Don't rush to conclusions..."

Captain Ouyang slowly shook his head, walking slowly to Wei Wei's side, his palm pressing against the wall of the room.

"Abstract essence..."

He spoke softly, and under his brown toad glasses, stripes like data flashed across his pupils.

The next mont, Wei Wei felt faint whispers dispersing—an invisible force spreading out, extending throughout the entire ward. When he looked inside through the small window again, he couldn't help but feel a slight shock in his heart, with a flash of joy quickly disappearing from his face.

The ward had changed. The patients were still there, wearing the sa clothes, wandering dazedly in the ward, but now you could see that the back of each person's head was missing a large chunk, revealing fresh red blood and pale brain matter, dripping ssily. The edges of the wounds were jagged and protruding, looking... as if they had been viciously bitten by so wild beast.

Or as if so hand had reached in and stirred vigorously.

"This..."

Wei Wei's eyes suddenly lit up slightly. He leaned closer to the window, carefully looking at the wounds on the back of those people's heads.

He looked very carefully, his Adam's apple involuntarily moving.

"Little Wei, you've stayed in the training camp for a long ti. Have you ever seen demonic power that would make people like this?"

Captain Ouyang's expression was solemn, looking at Wei Wei with so expectation.

Wei Wei carefully stared at the backs of those people's heads, watching them walk around with heads that were almost emptied of brain matter, yet still moving sluggishly like living people—like a group of walking corpses wandering in this ward.

After a long while, he unconsciously glanced at his own crotch.

Turning his head to look at Captain Ouyang, he nodded slightly and said: "Knowledge Demon system, corrupted monster, soul-devouring banshee."
