"Unhand !"
Cecilia’s eyes widened when she heard the familiar voice. She sat up and looked to see if she had heard right.
Alistair was now the newest prisoner in the dungeon.
It was bad enough for Cecilia that Giselle was in the dungeon, but now she would have to listen to Alistair.
’Why didn’t they just kill him?’ Cecilia wondered.
Alistair was better off dead, so their plans would die with him.
Cecilia looked away when her eyes t Alistair’s. She didn’t want anything to do with him now.
"You witch!" The insult brought Cecilia’s attention back to Alistair.
Gisellle was puzzled by the outburst. She thought Alistair was referring to her as a witch until she saw him glaring at Cecilia.
Giselle smiled, excited to see soone else bring Cecilia down off her high horse. It was well deserved.
Alistair was shoved into his cell and fell after losing his footing. "Bastards!"
Alistair stood up and dusted off his clothes. He placed his hand to his nose, trying to drown in the stench.
"You, why are you here?" Alistair questioned, surprised by Giselle’s appearance. "How are they getting away with placing everyone here? Then again, Lord Valthorn shall co once he doesn’t hear from you. That is how we are going to be saved."
"I wouldn’t count on my husband to save us. He is not going to co," said Giselle.
"Why not? You are here, which ans you cannot send him letters. He should suspect that there is trouble with you and send his n here to retrieve you. He should write to Edward as well-"
"The king is ill. The crown prince is acting as the king until he recovers. It is all the guards here speak about. There is no doubt in my mind that we shall soon hear the king is dead," Giselle said.
Alistair grabbed the tal bars to keep himself from falling after hearing the news. "You lie," he said, refusing to believe it.
"Why would I lie about the king’s health? The n here speak it, and I do not take it for a lie. The crown prince has always been ambitious, and now I believe that Nigel will kill his father. Unless you offered yourself to Nigel, you would not be safe," Giselle pointed out.
"Madness. What has beco of these sons? Did Nigel tell you that he would kill his father?" Alistair asked, unable to believe it. It was going to hurt Alistair for two of his strongest allies to be dead.
"It doesn’t matter how I suspect what he will do. Rather than expecting my husband to save you, you should find another way out. Unless you have been loyal to the crown prince all this ti. Could your family reach out to Sebastian?" Giselle asked, hoping there was a way out.
"No. I never had ti for that bastard, and I hated to be around him. He treats everyone like servants and toys with us. I expected Edward to have many more good years as king. How is it possible he has fallen ill now?"
Giselle rolled her eyes. "Yet they say n rule the world. Think about it a little bit more, Alistair. Who would benefit from the king dying?"
"The crown prince!" Alistair exclaid.
"Could you two be quiet?" Cecilia yelled, tired of hearing Giselle and Alistair. "It is bad enough that I am to hear her voice, but now your voice is driving mad."
"I wouldn’t be here if not for you. If you didn’t accuse of trying to kidnap Lady Hastings when it was you who sent a letter to , I would be ho. This started with you, yet you point your fingers at . If I could only get my hands on you," Alistair said, gripping the bars he imagined to be Cecilia’s neck.
"You would do nothing. You are now a weak, useless man since you lost all your allies. I suggest you be quiet and never forget that I am a Hastings," said Cecilia.
"Would you please stop ntioning you are a Hastings?" Giselle pleaded, tired of Cecilia throwing it around. "Look at where you ended up. Your na ans nothing."
"I don’t want to hear from you. You two are right where you belong. Alistair, you dug your grave the day you decided to turn your back on the Hastings. Your brother had so much honour, yet you didn’t have an ounce of it. I have no doubt you are going to hang," Cecilia said, looking forward to it.
While Cecilia was still furious, she was in the dungeon, and she liked knowing that all her enemies were dropping one by one. She only needed to wait now for Dante to realise his mistake and co take her out of the dungeon.
Giselle laughed. "You just don’t seem to get it. Your last na ans nothing since you were brought here. Your son has made his decision, and it is not you he cares for. We are all going to hang unless we stay quiet. Out of sight, and out of their minds."
"I am not to be hanged. Cecilia is the one who wrote the letter to asking to take your daughter and send her to Edward. I didn’t trust you, so I kept the letters you sent, and Lord Hastings is going to search my ho. He’ll see the truth soon," Alistair said, certain his na would be cleared.
"I warn you not to lie on my na. Were you not the one who approached Victoria with the plan to take that woman-"
"Lies!" Alistair yelled, trying to silence Cecilia from exposing him.
There were guards all around listening to what they said.
Alistair would not have it that Cecilia shifted the bla to him.
"You and my niece are working together to place your plans on . You never liked Lady Hastings, and Victoria wants to be Lady Hastings. I am innocent in this matter. Lady Valthorn," Alistair said, turning to Giselle for support. "Who do you believe? She wanted to kill your daughter."
"I believe that the two of you are guilty, and you shouldn’t drag into your troubles. I already have my own battles to worry about. It doesn’t matter who started what. They want all of us dead," Giselle pointed out.
"I am innocent!" Alistair proclaid. "It is Cecilia who wanted her dead."
"You wanted to send her to the king so you could be even more in his good graces. Do not switch your tune now, just because he is going to die. You started this!" Cecilia yelled, pointing her finger at Alistair.
