The world had narrowed to nothing but fire, smoke, and the crushing silence between breaths. I knelt beside Chief Ryan, my gloved hands trembling as they hovered over the debris pinning him down. His leg was crushed beneath twisted steel and collapsed concrete, the jagged remnants of what used to be the kindergarten's ceiling pressing rcilessly against him. Blood darkened the soot on his uniform, and the faint hiss of fire creeping closer filled the space between us.

His eyes t mine—sharp, clear, and terrifyingly calm despite everything.

"Mr. Fox," Ryan rasped, his voice steady even as ash clung to his lips, "what are you doing?"

I swallowed, the taste of smoke bitter on my tongue. "Saving you." My fingers dug into the wreckage again, ignoring the searing heat that bit through my gloves, tearing at the ruins like sheer willpower could bend steel.

But Ryan's hand shot out, gripping my wrist with surprising strength. His face—lined with exhaustion and streaked with soot—hardened with sothing more than pain.

"You've already answered the question," he said.

I froze.

That damn question. Would you save soone if the risk is too big?

I'd answered it without hesitation once. No, I'd said, because I have soone to go ho to. Sienna.

But standing here, watching the life bleed from a man who'd never treated like a rookie, who saw every mber of this team as family regardless of rank... that answer felt like ash in my mouth.

"I was wrong," I whispered, my voice shaking. I tugged against his grip, desperate, conflicted. "I can't leave you here."

His expression softened—not with sympathy, but with acceptance.

"Listen to ," Ryan said, pulling my attention back from the storm in my chest. "You have to take the kid."

I glanced down. The child he'd shielded was wedged between us, small and fragile, coughing weakly. Ryan shifted slightly, gritting his teeth through the pain to create just enough space.

"Grab him," he ordered.

My hands moved on instinct, sliding into the narrow gap, carefully pulling the boy free. His tiny arms wrapped around my neck, his sobs muffled against my shoulder.

"I'm coming back for you," I swore, my voice raw with sothing I couldn't na.

But Ryan's face twisted with fury. "Wake up, Mr. Fox!" he roared, his voice cutting through the crackling inferno like a blade. "It's over for ! My leg's crushed—I'm deadweight even if you could dig out. You'll die trying, and the district's calling for help. You must answer."

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. The words slamd into harder than any explosion.

"Please..." I whispered, but it was useless.

Chief Ryan's features softened one last ti. "Man..... I wish my skills could help others one last ti. Even if its not possible."

Then it happened.

A sharp ping echoed in my mind, the system notification cutting through the noise.

[Special Permission Granted: Chief Donovan Ryan has willingly authorized the use of "Destroy."]

Target: Chief Donovan Ryan

Proceed? [Yes] [No]

My chest tightened. My thumb hovered over the ntal prompt, shaking. I could feel his eyes on , not filled with fear but with quiet resolve.

With tears burning hotter than the flas around us, I pressed [Yes].

The world shifted.

A surge of warmth—no, not warmth, fire—rushed through . Skills flooded my mind, weaving into the very fabric of who I was.

Command Presence (Lv. 8): Instilled calm and focus, a force of leadership that steadied not just but anyone around .

Advanced Hazard Assessnt (Lv. 7): My awareness expanded, every creak of the collapsing structure painting vivid, perfect maps in my head.

Rescue Efficiency (Lv. 8): My movents sharpened, every second stretched and optimized for precision.

Thermal Perception (Lv. 6): The heat wasn't just heat anymore—it was a language, a guide.

Endurance Mastery (Lv. 7): My exhaustion evaporated, replaced by relentless stamina.

A-Rank Firefighter Job Acquired.

And my Advanced Rescue Mastery—absorbed the Rescue Efficiency skill, since it was one of its initial components, leveling up, becoming sothing almost otherworldly.

I stood there, perfectly attuned to the flas, the debris, the chaos. Like I was part of the inferno itself.

I looked down at Ryan one last ti. He didn't need words. His eyes that were tired but calm said everything. As if taking his skills took a part of whatever remaining energy he had.

"Yes sir," I whispered. Then I turned away.

I carried the child outside, where the sky was an angry red, and the air was thick with ash and sirens. I set him down gently beside the others, then sprinted back into the fire.

And I didn't stop.

Building after building, room after room. My body moved on instinct, guided by skills that felt like they'd always been mine. I navigated collapsing stairwells, suffocating smoke, and walls of fla with precision that defied logic. Sotis I carried one person, sotis two—rarely three. But I never stopped.

The hours blurred together, marked only by the rising body count—not of the dead, but the saved.

By the ti reinforcents arrived, all they had to do was put out the flas. The fires had raged, but I'd already carved paths through the destruction, pulling out over 300 people in just under five hours.

I sat on the curb, my gear scorched, my body bruised and burned beneath the layers—but I wasn't tired. The skills kept upright, even as my heart felt heavier than the debris I'd lifted.

A reporter approached, cara crew in tow, her voice cutting through the noise.

"Sir, can we get your na? You saved hundreds today. They're calling you a hero. So say... they saw a fox erge from the flas, carrying people to safety."

I looked up slowly, the distant roar of still-burning fires filling the gaps in her words.

My mind was still with Chief Ryan, buried beneath ash and wreckage.

But I answered anyway, my voice quiet.

"Mr. Fox....My na is Mr. Fox."
