The alarm blared, cutting through the morning haze like a blade.

No ti to think. No ti to breathe.

I dashed towards the origin of the sound, the piercing, rhythmic cry drawing in like a powerful magnet. My heart pounded—not out of fear, but from the rush of adrenaline that arose from realizing this was the mont. This was what all the planning, the lies, the new identity had been building toward.

The fire truck sat like a red beast at the side of the station, its engine rumbling to life. Firefighters scrambled around it, slipping into gear with chanical precision.

I spotted a man barking orders near the truck, his presence cutting through the chaos. Broad-shouldered, his weathered face lined with years of experience, and his voice carrying the authority of soone who'd been through hell and co back to talk about it.

Without hesitation, I jogged up to him.

"Mr. Fox," I said, my voice slightly muffled through the fox mask but firm. "New recruit."

He shot a quick glance, barely pausing. "Good to et you, Fox, but we're moving now. On the truck."

No questions. No hesitation. Just orders.

I hopped onto the truck, holding onto the rail as it surged ahead with a deep growl. Inside, the team was already gearing up—putting on heavy coats, attaching oxygen tanks, and fastening helts. I grabbed the closest set of equipnt, my hands awkwardly dealing with the straps and buckles.

Despite my nerves, my body knew what to do.

The instincts kicked in—not from experience, but from the firefighter job embedded in my skill set. It wasn't perfect. I still struggled with the unfamiliar weight, the awkward bulk of the equipnt, but muscle mory that wasn't truly mine guided through.

The truck's siren scread as we wove through traffic, the city blurring past the windows. I stole a glance at the man who had given orders—the one clearly in charge.

The truck ca to a sudden stop, and the abrupt halt threw against the side rail. I gazed out the window and sensed my stomach clench.

An apartnt complex lood before us—twenty stories high, flas already bursting through shattered windows on the fifteenth floor. Thick black smoke billowed upward, staining the morning sky like ink spilled across a page.

C-Rank housing. Cheap construction. Minimal fireproofing. A death trap waiting to happen.

"MOVE!" Ryan's voice snapped back to reality.

We spilled out of the truck, boots pounding against the asphalt. So firefighters imdiately grabbed hoses, dragging them toward the stairwell entrance. Water pressure roared to life as they disappeared inside, shouting orders lost beneath the crackling roar of the fire.

Ryan grabbed my shoulder. "You're with . Too crowded on the main stairwell—we'll take the maintenance stairs."

I nodded, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.

We raced to a side door, forced it open, and dashed up the dimly lit, narrow staircase. Smoke filtered in through the gaps, saturating the area with a harsh, oppressive fog. The filtration system of my mask maintained my awareness, yet the heat was unyielding, pressing against as if it were alive.

Floor after floor blurred past until we hit the fifteenth.

Ryan kicked the door open, and hell greeted us.

Fire surged through the corridor, consuming all in its way—walls, doors, and furniture. The air sparkled with warmth, and the heavy wave struck like a tangible impact. Without the mask, I would've passed out instantly.

"Stay close!" Ryan barked, already moving.

We advanced room by room, checking for signs of life. The heavy boots on my feet felt like anchors, but adrenaline pushed forward. My skills kept focused, analyzing the environnt even as panic scratched at the edges of my mind.

Smoke thickened, reducing visibility to almost nothing. The walls groaned around us, the building threatening to collapse under the strain of fire.

Then—

A cough. Faint but distinct.

Followed by a desperate scream.

"HELP! SOONE—PLEASE!"

Ryan's head snapped toward the sound, his instincts razor-sharp.

"There!" he yelled, rushing down the corridor toward the sound.

I followed without doubt, my heartbeat roaring like a drum in my ears.
