Elly instinctively looked down, the back of the fra facing upwards. She couldn’t see the photo inside, but given that a straight-laced man like Adam Jones had it on his office desk, she could figure out with her toes how important the person in the picture must be.
Just as her curiosity peaked, Adam’s speed surpassed hers. He let go of her, picked up the fra, opened a desk drawer without thinking, and tossed it in.
Confronted with Elly’s curious gaze, a shade of guilt flitted across his eyes. He awkwardly avoided her gaze and said,
“It’s Robert Green’s photo, always misplaced.”
His eagerness to explain made the excuse sound far-fetched, sothing he hadn’t taken into consideration.
At that mont, Robert “the old lady’s scapegoat” Green sneezed in the mailroom where he was being punished.
Who? Who’s talking about ?
Elly let her gaze linger aningfully on Adam’s guilt-ridden face for a few seconds before retracting it with a teasing smile.
“You seem quite fond of Assistant Baker.”
Seeing that Elly didn’t press about the photo in the fra, Adam quietly sighed in relief. He heard the tease in her voice and couldn’t help frowning as he said, “What do you an I’m fond of him?”
“Allowing soone to place their photo on your office desk, isn’t that favoritism?”
Her smile was particularly ambiguous, “I hadn’t realized President Jones had such a taste.”
Seizing the mont of Adam’s guilt, Elly nonchalantly stepped out of his embrace.
Of course, she knew the photo in the fra wasn’t of Robert. It was just that Adam was too guiltridden, so much so that the excuse he found was flimsy.
Who else could it be in the photo that Adam Jones had placed in his office to face all day, if not soone close to his heart?
What was he feeling guilty about when facing his ex-wife?
Elly laughed to herself, her face betraying nothing as she calmly collected all her thoughts.
“Stop causing trouble. Either rest and let handle this, or you deal with it yourself, and I’ll leave.”
With all thoughts reined in, she looked at Adam with a detached gaze, her eyes revealing no emotion.
But for so reason, seeing Elly’s expression, Adam’s heart felt a stir of panic.
The familiar estrangent appeared once again on Elly’s face.
Adam pursed his lips, suppressing the chaos in his heart, and had indeed lost the mood to tease her. He nodded, “Alright.”
True to his word, he didn’t cause any more trouble, but instead, he sat down on the leather couch, his mind sowhat turbulent.
Without Adam’s interference, Elly could finally concentrate on the docunts from the comfort of the boss’s chair. Yet, she couldn’t focus on a single word no matter how long she held the docunt.
Her mind was full of the vision of Adam nervously and guiltily picking up the photo fra. She couldn’t help but frown, feeling a wave of irritation.
By noon, she had only managed to read through two docunts.
Adam had co over and taken the docunt she was holding in her hand.
Elly looked up to et his deep, complex gaze as he pointed to his wrist, “It’s lunchti, let’s eat first.”
“No need, I’m in a hurry. Just get so takeout,” Elly declined without a second thought, picked up the docunt she was reading, only to have Adam take it away again.
“Adam Jones…”
“Are you in such a rush to leave?”
Adam’s face darkened slightly as he considered Elly’s distant and indifferent eyes, feeling a nagging sense of concern.
