Chapter 16: Umbra Noctis

* * *

What the hell just happened?

Seriously.

One second I was about to get publicly executed for "trying to escape"—which I didn't even do, by the way—

and the next?

People were turning into at.

Chunks of flesh, severed arms, skulls split open like waterlons.

It was everywhere.

The mine turned into a horror show in seconds.

And in the middle of it all...

Noel stood there. Blood-soaked. Calm. Her eyes glowing faintly.

Silent and terrifying.

"...GTP."

[Yes?]

"What the actual hell is going on?"

[Analyzing...]

[Conclusion: Subject Noel may be a fragnt of the Demon Lord.]

"...HUH?!"

[Her aura pattern matches data pulled from multiple ancient demonology texts. She may be a sealed vessel, an heir, or sothing worse.]

I stared at her.

"...Damn. She's strong."

[That would be putting it lightly.]

Around us, chaos erupted.

The remaining slaves either collapsed from shock, ran for their lives, or dropped to their knees in prayer.

Weirdos.

I turned to Noel and grabbed her wrist. "Co on."

We ran.

Down dark stone corridors.

Past broken carts and crushed corpses.

Smoke and dust filled the tunnels, and heat radiated from deep below like the mine itself was ready to collapse.

She was quiet as she ran beside .

Focused.

Almost there.

We turned the final bend—

And a guard stumbled into our path.

"Where do you think you're going?!"

He raised his sword, eyes wide and trembling.

Noel's aura flared—she stepped forward.

But I raised a hand. "Nah, let ."

"GTP. Motor control. Give sothing practical."

[Confird. Activating Muay Thai combat pattern.]

I moved.

Left step. Pivot. Elbow smash to the jaw.

His head snapped sideways—he staggered, but I wasn't done.

Knee to the gut. He doubled over.

Then I spun and slamd my shin into the side of his head.

CRACK.

He hit the floor like a sack of potatoes. Didn't get back up.

I straightened, rolled my shoulders, and looked over at Noel.

She was staring at again.

I smirked.

"What? You think you're the only one with sothing up your sleeve?"

Her eyes widened for a second.

Then... she smiled.

* * *

We made it out.

The mine burned behind us—faint in the distance. A smudge of red far below the cliffs.

Now we stood on top of a mountain.

Above everything.

The night air was cold.

The moon was full.

And for the first ti in weeks... we could breathe.

Noel stood beside , silent. Her hair fluttered in the wind, silver against the stars.

She hadn't said much since the escape.

I hadn't either.

My heart was still racing.

Not from the run. Not from the blood.

But from sothing else.

I looked up at the sky.

GTP.

[I'm here.]

Give sothing to say. Sothing fitting.

[Understood. I'll supply the phrasing. The rest is yours.]

I stepped closer to the cliff's edge, watching the world stretch out like a painting under moonlight.

"I didn't end up in that mine by accident," I said. "I let myself get caught. I wanted to see what rock bottom looked like in this world. I wanted to know how deep it really went—how far people fall when no one helps them. I went there to save them. Not as a hero. Not for praise."

Noel glanced at .

"I'm building sothing. A network that doesn't answer to kings or gods. A na whispered in fear by those who exploit others. A force that moves in silence. That protects when no one else will. That strikes where justice fails."

I turned to her.

"Umbra Noctis. The shadow of the night. The ones who walk through the darkness—so others don't have to."

"I was supposed to leave that mine alone. Complete the mission. Disappear."

I raised my hand toward her.

"But then I t you."

"I don't know what you're running from. I don't know what lives inside you. And I don't care. You survived. You protected. And you didn't lose yourself in the process. That matters more to than bloodlines or legends."

I took one more step forward, arm still extended.

"I'm going to change this world, Noel. No matter how broken it is. No matter how long it takes. And I've realized sothing..."

"I can't do it alone."

I looked into her eyes.

"So—walk with ."

For a second, the wind carried nothing but silence.

Then Noel slowly reached out—And placed her hand in mine.

"...Yes," she whispered.

And in that mont, beneath the moonlight,Umbra Noctis gained its first true shadow.
