An hour later, Kalli went down to the cafeteria for dinner, and slled sothing strangely delicious. Dinner was simple, grilled pork sandwiches, made with biscuits using the new flour. There were also rice balls with canned fruit inside, available either pressed or deep-fried.

By most standards, it was a very simple al, but everything contained the new ingredients, and that should give the kitchen so data to work with, to determine if the System’s ingredients were higher energy content.

Kalli suspected that they were, even though they were labelled Common Grade.

Kalli grabbed a sandwich and a couple of rice balls, and took a seat next to the door. She wouldn’t be staying long, as she volunteered to do second watch. But she didn’t want to miss out on dinner and end up eating whatever was left over.

It was a good thing that she did decide to co down early. The food was incredible, far more than it should be for the ingredients involved.

It was also just as filling as Gerry had hoped, and the amount that the students were eating was back down to less than normal. Many were even taking their second rice ball to go, so they could have it for a late night snack.

Gerry gave her a happy wave as Kalli retreated to her room to get so sleep. Or, that was the plan, before her mind was invaded by thoughts of everything that was going to be needed to make sure that these people stayed alive.

Weapons, armour, food, supplies to keep the Academy in good shape, then eventually transportation so they could clear more of the city, and better weapons, so that they weren’t in as much danger.

As she lay in bed, Kalli began making a list of everything that she wanted, or knew needed to be, done.

And then it hit her.

Wasn’t she the corporate boss now? She issued the quests, so basically, she was the one assigning all the work to the residents of the Academy, but nobody knew it. It felt a bit like being the head of so powerful family who operated behind the scenes.

Only, more dystopian, and less obscenely wealthy.

Kalli got up with her alarm and headed for the watch tower, where Sanchez was taking off his jacket in preparation to nap on the cot, while a newly arrived student stood watch.

"We’ve got a partner coming for you as well. Many of the new arrivals couldn’t sleep without knowing the area was safe, so we’ve added them as the second to the rotations. I know you’re going to say that it is a security risk, as they just arrived, but everyone here other than my team is a student, so they should have so sense of loyalty to the Academy."

Kalli smiled at the Sergeant’s greeting. "That’s understandable. I’m the only transfer student in the entire first year university class. But this one looks young, the baby face must cause him more than a few issues."

The boy at the window laughed. "What do you an baby face? I’m in the final year of middle school. I look perfectly normal for thirteen."

"Oh, right. I forgot that the campus wasn’t just a University. Sorry about that."

The boy smiled. "I heard that you can grant supplies if we have points. The team that found helped out with gear, but none of them had a decent weapon for . I’m a ranger, and I need a good ranged weapon.

What do you have for two points? I have a [Flaming Arrow] skill that adds bonus damage when needed. Or it can make the arrow if I run out."

"Oh, that is handy. But it does an you’re not well suited to guns. Alright, I can get you a proper bow and so specialty arrows for two points. The bow is a high-tech compound bow, and the arrows are designed for monster hunting."

Kalli brought up the item listing display to show him.

"Oh, that’s markedly better than a standard bow."

"It is? It looks like a regular compound bow to ."

The boy smiled. "That’s because you’re not an archer. You have to have superhuman strength to use that. Like, it would take a bodybuilder to draw it if you weren’t awakened. Fortunately, I got strength from awakening, and just barely et the minimum requirents.

With those arrows that add 10 points of damage when fired by heroes, it will do more damage than most guns, and twice what a short sword does."

"So, you want them?"

"Yes, please."

Kalli handed over the items, both gaining and losing two points. There didn’t seem to be an option to mark up the prices, but that might be because the price was so low that there was a limit on how badly she could scam people.

The System was many things, but it appeared to be fair.

"Nice, now I’ve got more than enough arrows and this aweso bow. Thank you, Kalli wasn’t it?"

"Indeed. It’s a pleasure to et you. I know I’ve got bad timing, with the world ending during the first day of school after I transferred. Though, if I was ho and not in an Academy full of others with powers, it would have been bad for ."

"No jokes there. I went back to my family’s condo down the hill and... well, it’s not great. I ended up retreating to join another group of students because I didn’t have a proper weapon to defend the building with.

You see, our primary family estate is in Saranlu on the West Coast, outside the city. Even if I wanted to go there, it’s four hundred kilotres away.

They’re doing alright, though.

My dad and two of the guards also awakened, and they’ve got the place locked down."

"Oh, that is lucky. Do you still have contact?"

The boy nodded. "Satellite phones. It’s a bit inconvenient, and the system is getting overloaded with whatever else they’re using it for. But we still send text ssages in a group chat. So, I can see how the compound is doing."

Kalli nodded. "The internet is out at the Academy too. They’ve got a satellite backup, but not many sites work. I think that the servers are all down, so even though there is a connection, only a peer to peer connection app will still connect."

The boy’s eyes lit up. "Oh, that’s a great idea! I bet one of the seniors can make one and push the package to everyone on their contact list, so we can keep talking as long as the satellites are working."

Sanchez nodded. "The others also managed to recover a cell transmitter while they were out. They grabbed it off the roof of an apartnt building, routers and all. I will have my guys set it up tomorrow, and we will have local cell phone service again.

Speaking of which, the building’s internal network is back online, we got that fixed a few hours ago, so you can log into the Academy servers to download information."

Kalli breathed a sigh of relief. If they were doing this well, then there was a chance that others were also working on getting things operating again, and stabilizing infrastructure. It was just the ssage from the System that had her concerned.

That two in a million chance that the heroes would succeed in saving the world without a Coordinator.
