I looked down at Dexter while he glanced up at .
I understood what he was trying to do—he was trying to use Sarah to go against Andy. But this was a risky bet.
Perhaps it might just be a gamble for Andy, after all.
Regardless of its success or otherwise, it was all a risky bet.
I nervously gripped Dexter’s wheelchair handles. After a long pause, I said, "Dexter..."
He patted my hand to reassure .
Andy’s n brought us to the laboratory. They also brought Sarah’s clone subject along. She remained indifferent with lifeless eyes.
She looked a lot like . In fact, she was probably the one who looked the most similar to among all the clone subjects.
The truth was, clone subjects didn’t all develop exactly the sa. They would be affected by other factors, like the environnt.
Sarah’s clone subject had unusually fair skin as she grew up in Geno Society’s laboratory. Her face was clean and devoid of any spots or blemishes.
I carefully studied her, yet she never once glanced at . It was as if she was resigned to her fate of death.
My gaze landed on her wrist-her only blemish was a scar. It ant that she had once struggled to kill herself before this.
I stared at her for the longest ti.
She seed to let out a relieved sigh the mont Dexter made her lie on the operation table. At the last mont, she looked at with an indescribable look.
I quietly watched her, feeling a mix of emotions deep down.
Clone subjects seed to be born at the rcy of others as laboratory white mice.
Andy stood at a high vantage point, looking down at everything happening in the lab capsule. He couldn’t tell what Dexter was doing from the outside. Dexter only placed Sarah’s body beside the clone subject, using brainwave stimulation and other techniques to operate. Dexter was aware that Andy wouldn’t grasp the intricacies of it all even if he was watching everything.
The so-called reincarnation project sounded like pseudoscience, theology, or even a scam. But often, whenever sothing close to theology was successfully proven, it would shock the whole world, bringing imnse profit as well as a whirlwind of risks and controversies. I knew that this entire experint was being recorded. It was also likely that Andy had allowed the shareholders and backers to watch the livestream.
I glanced over to the glass wall of the laboratory, realizing that it was probably packed with people on the other side.
Andy wouldn’t pass up the chance to make a na for himself—and Dexter was fully aware of it.
He wanted to let Andy have the spotlight so that everyone would know that the reincarnation project was real. He also wanted them to know that he was the only one with the experint data, possessing the key to imnse wealth.
Joel leaned against the corner wall, watching Dexter. He remained silent for the longest ti before saying, "You should think it through."
He was asking Dexter to reconsider. As soon as those from the outside believed in the existence of the reincarnation project, his worth would reach an all-ti high, and everyone would be after him.
Dexter said nothing as he focused on studying the experint data. He quickly pressed the switch on the control panel once it hit a certain peak.
After so ti, the clone subject gradually lost her vital signs. Her ECG monitor blared sharply for about three seconds before her heart started beating again.
Her body was in a near-death state when her heart stopped beating in those three seconds.
Just like soone who died of sudden death or had suffered a severe brain injury before going into a coma-both could trigger the chanism for reincarnation.
"I heard about this one case long ago. After getting struck on the head, a genius
a mathematician lost all his mathematical knowledge after waking up, turning into an utterly ordinary person. So suspected that it was a case of soul transfer, where another soul
entered his body," Joel whispered.
"Isn’t it said that only a genetic code can lock in a soul, and it would require the sa genes -like with a clone subject?" I softly asked.
Joel shook his head. "Clone subjects are just to ensure the success rate of the reincarnation project, as it minimizes interference and impurities. But those who are reincarnated by chance in daily life are often taken over by blood relatives."
I nodded in understanding. The switch for reincarnation might be triggered as long as there was a genetic connection.
Perhaps in so part of the world, a grandson might have nearly died in a car accident, and when he was successfully rescued, what truly lived within him turned out to be his grandfather or other ancestors.
It was starting to sound fantastical now-just like so ti-traveling or reincarnation novels, where everything was suddenly given a scientific explanation.
Dexter was carefully observing the data as he waited for the clone subject to wake up.
At the sa ti, Andy and those behind the cara and glass wall were anticipating the clone subject to wake up.
Andy was completely at ease as he was the one who personally cultivated and selected the clone subject.
The waiting process was agonizing. Everyone seed to be holding their breath.
This was also my first ti seeing Dexter "reincarnate" soone else. He looked rather obsessive when he was serious.
As the experint ca to an end, the clone subject finally opened her eyes amidst the beeping sound of the dical equipnt.
anwhile, the precision scale holding Sarah’s body showed a slight drop in weight. Even though the number wasn’t significant, it could be likened to the weight of a soul.
"Sarah?" Impatient, Andy rushed in from the outside. He stood excitedly by the operating table, watching the clone subject who was arousing.
She struggled to adjust once she woke up, taking so ti before she could prop herself up. She first looked at her hands, then looked around, feeling dizzy and disoriented in her new body.
Sarah shook her head vigorously. After getting a good look at Andy, she imdiately gave him a harsh slap.
He was smiling even though he was just slapped. He cupped his cheek and laughed, looking a little taken back.
Dexter sat in his wheelchair as he looked indifferently at Andy.
Andy reached out to grab Sarah by her shoulders. "Is that you, Sarah?"
Sarah smiled and replied, "Who else would it be if not ?"
Andy smiled and reached out for her hand.
Sarah grinned at Dexter. "Looks like you wouldn’t have cooperated if we hadn’t done this. You wanted to reincarnate so that I would help you deal with Andy, right? Too bad you misread the situation. We’ve been in cahoots from the beginning. We just wanted to see if this reincarnation project is real."
Andy was busy admiring Sarah’s new body. His eyes were lit with unrestrained joy. They were truly mad.
As expected, we lost the bet. She had thrown herself into the ga and risked everything in order to gain a new life.
"You’ve worked hard, Dexter," Andy said with a smile before leaving with Sarah.
"Let’s conduct a comprehensive examination and monitor the data," Andy instructed the other scientists to start checking Sarah’s body to record the data. He wanted to find out if they could uncover the key to reincarnating themselves.
However, Dexter remained calm.
"We got tricked, Dexter," I whispered. We lost our bet this ti.
"No," Dexter replied aningfully. "We haven’t lost yet."
He was betting on human greed at the very last chance.
