Zion finally left.
I knew his Achilles’ heel fairly well-he was pretty sensitive and not as shaless as Eason.
Silence filled the living room. Violette was avoiding my gaze, while I sat on the chair and watched her quietly.
We both sat in an awkward silence for the longest ti.
Violette eventually broke the silence out of unease. "Sophia."
"Don’t you have anything you want to explain to ?" I asked, looking at her.
The person before suddenly seed very unfamiliar.
In my mories, Violette was my only ’friend’. After I lost my mories, I started yearning for emotional connections just to fill the void I felt.
As such, whether it was with Damien or Violette, I found myself trying to fill the void within with similar emotions-almost as a form of revenge-driven compensation.
Looking back now, I might have fallen for Dexter earlier than I thought.
I already had the ability to love soone, but I was so clueless about emotions that I mistook it for pretense from getting too caught up in my role.
It turned out that I had loved him deeply even before I lost my mories. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have ended up treating Damien as his substitute and going through all the pain and drama.
"Did you find out about everything?’ Violette tentatively asked.
"Why else would I co to see you?" I calmly replied.
Violette fell silent before whispering, ’I’m sorry I lied to you, Sophia. I’m with Geno Society. My job was to get close to you, observe you, and record your experint data on behalf of your parents."
That made sense since I was a product of Geno Society’s experint. My parents were the ones monitoring and uploading my experint data before the car accident. It was only natural for soone new to stay close to after their deaths.
"I started off only seeing you as an experintal subject, but over ti, I started developing feelings for you, Sophia. I started to fear for you and wanted to protect you, but I’m just a pawn myself,’ Violette mocked bitterly.
"I truly consider you a friend, Sophia. Geno Society never assigned to any other tasks other than observing you and recording your experint data. Please believe ," she anxiously said.
She wanted to believe that she had never hard us before.
Inodded. I did believe that.
I said, ’You’re very important to Geno Society. You managed to get out of dangerous situations unscathed because the mastermind was protecting you.’
"They wouldn’t have cared about your life if you were just a re observer. After all, they didn’t think twice about eliminating my parents, who were such key figures.’
What I was more interested in now was Violette’s identity. What was her connection to the mastermind of Geno Society, as well as her relationship with that so-called "mother"?
Was that mother of hers the mastermind of Geno Society?
"Are you also an experintal subject or a clone?’ I narrowed my eyes and rephrased my question. Violette shook her head and replied, "I’m not. I’m just an ordinary person, with no genetic modification at all." I chuckled. "Would Geno Society pay so much attention to an ordinary person?"
Violette lowered her head, clenching her fists tightly. ’Please stop trying to pry information out of , Sophia. I can’t say anything more about what’s to co. I can only tell you this much. Saying more wouldn’t do good to any of us."
I looked at her and slowly unclenched my fists.
This was my only friendship. It hadn’t exactly ended, but it had been mixed with too many complications. It no longer was as pure as it once was.
Violette’s eyes were rimd red as she cried.
She was only an ordinary person. She didn’t want to lose as her friend.
"I’m sorry, Sophia." But there was nothing she could do other than to apologize.
"Alright, I won’t ask anymore," I said, feeling a pang in my chest.
"What about Zion, then? Even if you’re an ordinary person, you’re still with Geno Society. Zion has genuine feelings for you. He even wants to marry you and bought a house in advance. How long are you planning to keep this from him?" I asked.
Violette lowered her head as tears filled her eyes. "I can’t marry him. My mother would never agree to it. I’ll only end up hurting him, but I truly love him and can’t bear to hurt him. I’ll think of sothing, Sophia." I scoffed. Her solution was probably the sa as Dexter’s-which was to escape by death.
I said, "More and more secrets and laboratories of Geno Society are getting uncovered and exposed. With the dark truth coming out, Zion, being an upright police officer, will surely investigate this to the end. "I’m guessing the reason you’re still around him is because your "mother" wants you to eliminate him, right?" I figured that Geno Society would want to kill a few police officers as a warning against the others. And they would definitely eliminate Zion.
He was a good person and an upright police officer. Geno Society wouldn’t be able to bribe him. Violette looked at in surprise. She laughed amidst her tears and said, "How did you manage to figure everything out? Both you and Dexter are so scary. No wonder you’re married to each other!"
She wiped her tears. Clearly, Dexter had also figured it out and had used this to blackmail her to get her to agree to keep his death a secret and help him escape from the explosion.
"Can’t bring yourself to do it?" I asked, looking at Violette
She was clenching her fists tight.
Violette said, "I’ve never killed soone before. I’ve always lived an ordinary life before getting assigned to you. My mother was the one who kept forcing ."
"She asked to monitor you and didn’t assign any other tasks. Over ti, I gradually accepted it, since it wouldn’t cause you any harm anyway. But this ti, she’s asking to kill soone-I can’t do it!"
Violette hugged her legs close. She really couldn’t do it.
I asked, "Why haven’t you thought of leaving Geno Society at this point? Is that so-called "mother" so important to you? Or does she have so kind of leverage on you? Why can’t you be selfish and leave Geno Society? You should co clean with Zion. He wouldn’t do anything to you."
I couldn’t understand what Violette was worried about.
She seed anxious as she shook her head. "I can’t do that, Sophia. My mother’s life is in Geno Society’s hands."
I frowned before sighing. "She wouldn’t have asked you to kill soone if she truly treated you as her daughter. You won’t be able to turn back once you kill soone.
"I treated you as a friend, Violette. You should sort out your issues with Zion yourself. Good luck." I got up to leave.
Violette looked at nervously. "Sophia," she called out to agitatedly in a choked voice. "You’ve regained all your mories, right? But you’re still willing to treat as your friend, right?"
I did not reply to her and walked away.
She cried after I left. I could hear her heart-wrenching sobs from outside the door.
"Hello, miss." Ms. Ewing’s son had co to pick up downstairs. They both were trustworthy people.
His na was Cole Campbell, and he was currently my chauffeur
"Keep a close watch on Violette. She’s reluctant to kill Zion. Geno Society will surely send soone else to take him out if she continues to drag it on. If Violette finds out, she’ll likely go to her "mother". Watch her closely,’ I said.
Since Violette refused to tell , I’d keep an eye on her to find her so-called "mother".
