Empress Alexia sat behind an ornate desk carved from a single piece of dark wood, reviewing docunts that bore the imperial seal and required her personal attention.

When Grim was announced, she looked up from her paperwork with obvious interest.

"Lord Ambrose," she said, gesturing to the chair across from her desk. "Your ssage ntioned urgent matters requiring imdiate attention. I trust the Celestial Sect is progressing well?"

"Indeed, Your Majesty," Grim replied, settling into his chair. "The sect has eliminated the uncommitted and begun serious cultivation training. However, I require your permission for a temporary absence from the capital."

The Empress’s eyebrows rose with obvious surprise. "A temporary absence? At this particular mont in your sect’s developnt?"

"I have received an invitation from the Húli jīng," Grim explained carefully. "They wish to discuss matters of mutual interest that could benefit both House Ambrose and the Empire."

"The fox spirits," Alexia mused, her expression growing more thoughtful.

"I believe it relates to my marriage to Ruxi. Seeing the kind they co from and understanding who they are."

The Empress leaned back in her chair, studying him.

"And how long would this departure take?" she asked.

"Perhaps a couple of months," Grim replied. "Possibly longer, I won’t know until I discuss more."

"A couple of months," Alexia repeated slowly. "

"Master Shen Lao is fully capable of overseeing their training in my absence," Grim said confidently. "And the experience I gain from the Húli jīng could prove invaluable."

The Empress considered this explanation, her fingers drumming thoughtfully on the desk surface.

"Lord Ambrose," she said finally, "I suspect this invitation represents more than marriage arrangents."

"Your Majesty is quite perceptive," Grim replied carefully. "There is probably a lot more than just marriage."

"You’ve chosen a wife," Alexia stated rather than asked.

"I have developed a relationship with soone who represents both personal and political advantages," Grim confird. "The Húli jīng princess, Ruxi."

The Empress’s expression shifted to sothing approaching satisfaction. "Excellent. A marriage alliance with the fox spirits would strengthen the Empire’s position considerably. They’ve remained neutral in most conflicts, but their support could prove invaluable if properly cultivated."

"My thoughts exactly," Grim agreed. "Though I should note that the relationship is still developing. This journey will determine whether permanent arrangents are feasible."

"And if they are feasible?"

"Then House Ambrose will be bound to the Húli jīng through marriage, with all the benefits such an alliance would provide," Grim replied. "If they are not, then at least we will have explored the possibility thoroughly."

Alexia stood and moved to the window, gazing out at the capital’s skyline while she considered the implications of what he was proposing.

"A marriage alliance with the fox spirits," she mused. "Access to their magical knowledge, their intelligence networks, their diplomatic connections. The potential benefits are substantial."

"Indeed," Grim agreed. "And the timing is particularly advantageous. Our current strength allows us to negotiate from a position of respect rather than desperation."

"True," the Empress said, turning back to face him. "Very well, Lord Ambrose. You have my permission for this diplomatic mission. However, I want regular reports on your progress and any agreents you reach."

"Of course, Your Majesty."

"And I want detailed information about any techniques or knowledge you acquire. The Empire’s interests must be served alongside your personal goals."

"Understood," Grim replied. "Though I should ntion that so knowledge may be restricted to those who have formal relationships with the Húli jīng."

"Which brings us back to the importance of your personal success," Alexia observed with slight amusent. "Your marriage prospects have beco a matter of imperial interest."

"An interesting developnt," Grim agreed. "Though I must admit that the young lady in question is quite remarkable in her own right. The political advantages are simply additional benefits."

"Really?" the Empress asked with obvious interest. "Tell about her."

"Princess Ruxi is intelligent, skilled in both magic and diplomacy," Grim explained. "She understands the broader implications of political relationships while maintaining genuine warmth and humor."

"She sounds formidable," Alexia observed.

"She is," Grim confird.

"And she’s interested in marriage to a human lord?"

"She appears to be," Grim replied carefully. "Though fox spirits approach such matters differently than humans. This journey will clarify exactly what kind of permanent arrangent might be possible."

The Empress returned to her seat, her expression suggesting she was making final calculations about the wisdom of approving this mission.

"Lord Ambrose," she said eventually, "I’m going to be direct with you. The Empire needs strong allies, and House Ambrose has demonstrated remarkable capability in recent months. A marriage alliance with the Húli jīng would be a significant diplomatic achievent."

"I appreciate your confidence, Your Majesty."

"However," she continued, "I also need to ensure that personal considerations don’t interfere with your obligations to the Empire. The Celestial Sect represents a significant investnt. We don’t need a repeat of the past."

"The sect will continue to function effectively in my absence," Grim assured her. "And my experiences with the Húli jīng will only enhance my ability to provide better support for the Empire."

"Very well," Alexia decided. "You have my permission and my blessing for this diplomatic mission. Pursue the marriage alliance with whatever resources you require, and keep inford of your progress."

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

"When do you plan to depart?"

"Within the week," Grim replied. "I want to ensure the sect’s cultivation training is proceeding properly before I leave."

The Empress stood, signaling the end of their formal discussion.

"Lord Ambrose, I hope you understand the significance of what you’re undertaking. A successful marriage alliance with the Húli jīng would position House Ambrose among the most influential families in the Empire."

"I understand, Your Majesty," Grim replied, rising from his chair. "And I appreciate the opportunity to serve the Empire’s interests while pursuing personal happiness."

"See that you do both successfully," Alexia said with a slight smile. "I’ll be very interested to hear about your experiences with fox spirits."

[She’s quite supportive of your marriage plans,] Caius observed as Grim walked through the palace corridors.

"She understands the political value of the alliance," Grim replied silently. "And she recognizes that personal happiness and political advantage can be compatible goals."

[And if the fox spirits prove less accommodating than expected?] Caius asked.

"Then we’ll adapt accordingly," Grim said with confidence. "But I suspect Princess Ruxi and I understand each other well enough to reach mutually beneficial arrangents."

[You sound quite confident about this relationship,] Caius observed with what might have been amusent.

"I am," Grim agreed. "For perhaps the first ti in my life, personal desires and political necessities are pointing in the sa direction."

"My biggest worry is the Empress."

[The Empress. Why is she a worry?]

"Not that ago, she tried to get to wedding her daughter Liona. And now, she’s happy and excited to see marry to strengthen the Empire."

"I cannot imagine she’s just okay with this marriage. She must have sothing up her sleeve."

[Yes, that is most peculiar. I knew her as a child, but I could only speculate on what she’s thinking now.]

"Yes, it is most troubleso, but we have more pressing things to worry about."
