Master Ling Yi was already drenched at this point, his thin cheeks had turned from pale to flushed, and the cold wind that assaulted him almost froze his clothes solid.
Deputy General Bao had begun to sense that sothing was terribly amiss, watching as disciple after disciple of Qiandao Temple was replaced, the number of available substitutes rapidly dwindling. The soldiers under the command of his fellow deputy general could barely stand anymore.
"Master Ling Yi, the thod I ntioned—" the soldier looked anxiously at the increasingly ferocious monsters within the formation, fearing it would be too late if they delayed any longer.
Master Ling Yi glanced at the fallen brothers behind him, sparse in number. Although unclear whether the thod ntioned by the other party would work or not, he seed to have little choice left. Master Ling Yi could only nod his head.
Seeing this, the soldier imdiately ran back and gathered his own brothers. In less than the ti it takes to drink a cup of tea, about twenty or thirty n quickly grabbed their belongings.
Master Ling Yi let Chang Yu temporarily take his place.
The monsters in the formation were empowered by the Evil Spirit Qi, which feared fire above all. And their fire was not ordinary—they had used it before to confront the Ghost Shadows of Ghoul Ravine.
Master Ling Yi did not delay for a mont. Such common spells had long been abandoned by them, and only the Fire Order Squad employed such thods. But at that mont, Master Ling Yi was ready to clutch at straws.
The twenty or thirty soldiers quickly dug circular pits around the formation and swiftly filled them with cinnabar, sulfur, and other materials. These were readily available, as many of the mages who fled from the Districts and Counties were also among them. They often carried these items for use when their spells were insufficient. The supplies, together with nurous devices and Magic Artifacts originally part of the formation, were all prepared in less than fifteen minutes.
Master Ling Yi looked at the formation, which was on the brink of collapse, gritted his teeth, raised the Golden Whip in his hand, and hurled the fire from the camp’s entrance directly into the pits filled with firewood.
Everyone held their breath and silently watched the scene. The firelight from the pits surrounding the formation quickly shot into the sky, and the dark red smoke that constantly spilled from the formation, upon contacting the flas, instantly turned into black smoke that dissipated in the air.
A glimr of joy flashed in the eyes of the mages around, and there were a few quiet exclamations of delight.
But many mages watched with even greater anxiety.
Master Ling Yi then turned to look at his brothers who were still holding on, seeing that everyone’s eyes were focused on him. He originally had been about to nod, but now he could not bring himself to do so. However, after only a second’s hesitation, he firmly nodded.
Five mages withdrew their hands at the sa ti, and at that mont, everyone stopped breathing.
Yet nothing happened, and the monsters within the formation seed to suddenly stop moving. Then, the flas grew higher, wildly engulfing the inside of the formation, and every golden line was now covered in flas. They could even hear the monsters screaming in agony.
"Brother, it seems to be working," Chang Yu said excitedly. Indeed, just now, many monsters had been burnt to death. The fire could actually kill them. However, before Master Ling Yi could nod and breathe a sigh of relief, the situation in the formation suddenly changed. The monsters, which had previously shown fear, now ramd the formation more frantically than ever, heedless of their own lives. The bright yellow flas coated their bodies, and their dreadful screams indicated the unbearable pain they were experiencing. So monsters had half an arm or half a body burnt away, yet they continued to slam against the formation.
Those standing outside the camp began to grow restless, especially the soldiers at the back who were now involuntarily retreating, their faces filled with panic and fear.
Master Ling Yi clenched his fists tightly, but his heart was slowly sinking.
...
Not far from the camp, in a place called Cat Ear Cave, Elder Can was wholly focused. Between his fingers, the dark red smoke twitched ever so slightly, and within the formation, all the monsters attacked one after another, desperately trying to break out of the formation.
The Marquis of Zhenbei’s patrol soldiers had already been withdrawn by then, the cunning fox that he was, naturally seeking to erase all tracks not in his favor, simply waiting for the soldiers of the Northwest Border to be mutually wounded in the fight against these monsters before he arrived belatedly to beco the last victor.
As for the mages of Qiandao Temple, the Marquis of Zhenbei was even less worried, so long as Master Ling Yi was unhard, it would be seen as his rit for saving him.
Besides, in the chaos, those from the Ghoul Ravine could slip out, thus killing three birds with one stone, a triple gain which the Marquis of Zhenbei had already thought of on his way to the camp.
Yin He looked coldly at the distant flas, his face unabashedly displaying mockery and disdain.
It seed he had overestimated the mages of Qiandao Temple who lacked even basic common sense and experience, yet absurdly aspired to be his master.
Suddenly, Yin He withdrew his gaze and Elder Can imdiately grew tense. Was the Young Master dissatisfied with his performance?
Yin He glanced at Elder Can; barely satisfactory, offering just enough interest to watch. At that mont, however, his patience had run out. With a wave of his hand, a dark red smoke imdiately drifted from the air above.
"Boom—" Suddenly, a thunderous roar ca from the formation, as if a horde of demons were dancing and a multitude of beasts were celebrating. Suddenly, these monsters attacked the formation with even greater ferocity, as if they had just snapped awake.
"Clang—" The formation was finally breached.
Master Ling Yi couldn’t help but step back, and the people behind him also instinctively retreated a step. A small squad of soldiers had already quietly moved back fifty ters.
However, in the next mont, the monsters seed to suddenly lose their energy, and those that slithered out were turned into black smoke by the flas.
"Brother, we’ve truly succeeded—" Chang Yu imdiately stepped forward. Master Ling Yi opened his eyes, and at this mont, the monsters that ca out from the crevice of the formation were burned into black smoke.
"Young Master—" Elder Can stood up anxiously. Why were the monsters motionless? Stepping out would be akin to courting death, wouldn’t it?
Yet Yin He rely scoffed. What do you know? Only by letting them first stabilize their minds and believe that they had succeeded would they completely relax. Once they had fully let down their guard, it would be ti for his killing blow.
Indeed, more and more faces began to show joy, thinking that the intense assault they had just witnessed was the monsters’ all-out attack. However, in the next mont, where they couldn’t see, Yin He suddenly waved his hand, and the cold wind left a long deep mark in front of him.
At the sa ti, the monsters inside the formation suddenly all looked up. Regardless of their injuries, they all revealed sinister smiles. In the next mont, with earth-shaking roars, black shadows burst explosively out of the formation, with countless monsters flying off in all directions.
By the ti everyone realized what was happening, several monsters had already lunged directly at Master Ling Yi.
"Crack—"
"Crack—" The next mont, Master Ling Yi’s head fell to the ground, while his body still stood erect.
This scene imdiately stunned everyone present.
