Chapter 1066: Chapter 1066: n Are the Most Fickle
“Mom!” Bertha Swift called softly, bending over to try and hold her mother’s hand, but did not dare to touch it after seeing the bandage on her wrist.
Mrs. Swift softly called Bertha again, then murmured apologies, her gaze vacant, her entire body exuding a deathly aura.
Bertha felt a pang of heartache, “Did they say sothing to you? Mom, didn’t we agree that you would live with from now on and not care about that trash? Why be so foolish…”
Listening to her daughter, Mrs. Swift’s gaze fell on Bertha’s still red and swollen cheek, and with her other hand, she gently stroked it, murmuring, “Did he hit you? Bertha, I’m sorry, it’s my fault, I couldn’t protect you…”
“I’m fine, it was just an accident today, he can’t do anything to now, don’t be afraid.” Bertha felt uneasy in her heart.
Adam Piers ca in and saw Bertha, looking a bit disheveled, leaning by Mrs. Swift’s bedside. He quietly brought a chair over for Bertha.
Bertha looked back at him, then sat down, gently covering her mother’s wrist with her hand, “I’m not a child anymore, I have a job, I can support us. And… I’m with him now, Milne Swift won’t dare bully us.”
“Aunt, I will protect you and Bertha.” Adam Piers spoke smoothly.
Mrs. Swift, still a bit dazed since waking up, took a while to understand Bertha’s aning and instinctively looked at Adam. Hearing his promise-like words, her mind filled with Milne Swift’s humiliations and a heap of nasty words from Song Yanner, she remained silent for a while and gently patted Bertha’s hand.
Mrs. Swift no longer trusts n.
Whether it’s Milne Swift or Adam Piers, they all seem the sa to her.
Young n’s promises are the most useless.
Back then, Milne Swift’s words were even more sweet-talking than Adam’s, but what happened later? Useless hen, idiot, trash, bitch…
The sweeter the words were in the past, the more hurtful the bitter words feel now, thrown upon her.
Now Milne Swift even uses her to threaten her daughter, she truly feels useless!
“Bertha, don’t force yourself.” Mrs. Swift held back for a long ti, then suddenly said to Bertha.
Bertha was slightly stunned, then heard her mother continue to murmur, “n are all no good, saying the prettiest things while doing the nastiest deeds. I was too foolish before, thinking he still cared about , but in the end, I beca a joke. Bertha, take care of yourself, don’t end up like …”
“I… okay.” Bertha wanted to say sothing to comfort her mother but was t with her mother’s bloodless face and ultimately said nothing.
Mrs. Swift continued to ramble a bit, as if talking to Bertha or to herself, and finally, her body couldn’t hold out and she fell asleep again.
“I’ll stay here tonight, you go rest.” Seeing her mother asleep, Bertha let out a small sigh, then noticed Adam still standing by. Slightly surprised, she urged him.
“I’ll stay with you.” Today was their first day together, yet so much had happened, Adam was uneasy about Bertha being left alone.
Furthermore, Mrs. Swift’s emotional state was unsettled, he didn’t want to risk Bertha reverting back to her original state after painstakingly opening up to him because of these negative emotions.
“No need…”
“You go sleep, I’ll keep watch.” Bertha’s refusal was halfway out when Adam took hold of her hand, cutting her off with a firm statent.
He could see that Bertha’s body was on the verge of breaking down. After speaking, he didn’t wait for Bertha’s protest and pulled her to sit on the adjacent caretaker’s bed, “Sleep, I’ll watch over Aunt here.”
“I…”
“Listen, you have a boyfriend now.” Adam interrupted Bertha again.
Looking at Adam’s sincere and handso face, Bertha didn’t say anything more; with today being too much, she really had been forcing herself.
She thought she wouldn’t be able to sleep, but she fell asleep as her head touched the pillow.
Adam watched Bertha’s sleeping face, listened to her gentle breathing, pulled the blanket over her carefully, and checked Mrs. Swift’s temperature, confirming there was no fever before he left the room.
As soon as the door closed, Adam’s previously gentle face imdiately turned grim.
Ray Leighton, having witnessed Adam’s change of expression, shivered, suddenly a bit hesitant to approach. It wasn’t until Adam’s cold gaze swept over to him that he awkwardly stepped forward.
“Master Adam…”
“What exactly happened today?” Adam’s face wore a nacing chill, a far cry from the person in the room earlier.
Ray had anticipated Adam’s question and quickly reported the details he had already investigated to him.
Adam had sowhat guessed a bit before, but after hearing Ray, his expression darkened, “The n of the Swift family are really worthless and shaless.”
Ray echoed his sentints quickly and cautiously asked, “What do you plan to do now?”
“What to do? Milne Swift wants to climb back to the highest social standings, right? Then I’ll make sure he can’t have his way.” Adam thought of Milne Swift’s futile dreams and spoke derisively.
Ray had rarely seen Master Adam so ruthless and couldn’t help but break out in a cold sweat for the Swift family. Everyone assud that Master Adam of the Piers was just a dandy, the most useless, but Ray knew anyone who could survive the power struggles in the Roberts without a scratch and gain Brandon Piers’s trust couldn’t truly be a foolish spoiled brat.
Just that he was accustod to playing dumb, but clearly, the Swift family had provoked him today, and their future peace seed unlikely.
Adam returned to the hospital room; both Mrs. Swift and Bertha were asleep. He turned off the room’s main lights, leaving only a small light on, made sure Mrs. Swift was alright, then settled on the sofa to look at docunts on his phone.
In the middle of the night, Mrs. Swift had a fever, and Adam called the doctor to handle it. When done, he found Bertha sitting on the bed in a daze, looking at him. He asked softly, “Did I wake you? Your mother is fine now, no need to worry.”
“Mm.” Bertha, still groggy from her nightmare, responded with a vague hum.
Seeing her like this, Adam reached to touch her forehead to check her temperature, only for Bertha to gently clasp his soft hand, “You haven’t slept at all?”
“I’m not sleepy, used to drinking and clubbing till dawn before, staying up like this is nothing.” Adam worried Bertha wouldn’t believe him, so he emphasized it on purpose.
Bertha had beco a bit more awake by now, and hearing Adam’s words, she retorted disdainfully, “What’s there to be proud of in that?”
“Heh, so fierce.”
“Stop being cheeky, get so sleep, don’t you have a film wrap-up tomorrow?” Bertha, still carrying so sleepiness, spoke hoarsely, then looked at the small narrow sofa and finally patted the space beside her.
Adam was taken aback for a mont, then smiled and didn’t refuse Bertha’s kindness. He removed his jacket and lay down, not forgetting to drape his long arm over Bertha’s waist.
Bertha’s body instantly tensed. Feeling the warmth of the man’s palm, she rembered how they’d almost ended up in bed before coming to the hospital and bit her lip, “Take your hand off.”
“I’ll just hold you and do nothing.” Adam Piers explained softly, sounding particularly intimate.
Bertha Swift’s body tensed even more, cursing under her breath. At three or four in the morning, people are at their sleepiest. She wanted to say sothing, but her body was too exhausted, and Adam was no better. Before long, the room was filled with the sounds of their breathing.
In the morning, Bertha woke up before Adam. Although she had clearly turned her back to Adam before sleeping, she woke up nestled in his arms, with one leg draped over his, just like a couple deeply in love.
This…
Even though they had indeed confird their relationship last night, the current scene made Bertha blush furiously. She cautiously tried to slip away, only to hear a soft laugh from above. She looked up, her nose brushing against Adam’s lips, which made her heart tremble, “You’re awake; hurry up and get up before soone cos into the room!”
Saying this, Bertha planned to flee the scene, but Adam held her gently in place, “Feeling shy?”
Bertha felt both shy and annoyed. This damn man, who’s shy?
“Let go, my mom will wake up soon, and don’t forget she doesn’t quite like you right now.” Bertha reminded softly.
Thinking about Mrs. Swift’s gaze last night, Adam sighed lightly and kissed Bertha’s nose tip, “Alright, but I’ll make her believe in .”
“Hmm, good luck.” Bertha dashed out of bed upon leaving those words, only to et her mother’s open eyes when she turned around, evidently awake for so ti.
“Ahem…” Thinking about how she was holding Adam just now, Bertha coughed lightly in embarrassnt and called out softly, “Mom.”
Mrs. Swift looked at her daughter with a complex expression, then glanced at Adam, who was also getting up awkwardly. She simply turned her head, choosing not to see it.
This made Bertha even more embarrassed, but Adam, being rather unfazed, regained his composure after a mont, “Auntie, what would you like to eat? I’ll go get it.”
Mrs. Swift said nothing, and Adam wasn’t annoyed. He looked at Bertha, “How about you?”
Bertha admired Adam’s attitude imnsely and quickly nad a few things, also ntioning what her mother would like to eat.
Adam nodded, “I’ll be back soon.”
Once Adam left, Mrs. Swift looked at her daughter, no longer angry, but sighed lightly.
Bertha knew what her mother was worried about, “Mom, didn’t you say he’s nice?”
“But n are the most fickle.” Mrs. Swift spoke with great pessimism.
Bertha understood all too well, “Mom, I know what you’re worried about, don’t worry. I’m not a fool; I’ll leave myself a way out.”
“As long as you know, don’t end up like …”
“Mom, you’re not useless, just too naive.” Bertha gently comforted her. Her mother ca from an affluent background, pampered since childhood, with family status better than the Swifts. Marrying Milne Swift was considered marrying beneath her. Unfortunately, the Roberts faced a financial crisis many years ago. After the old man passed away, the family fell into decline.
Without her maiden family to rely on and blindly trusting her husband, lacking her own opinions, she gradually beca an accessory to her father, turning into Mrs. Swift, a woman without her own identity.
Ending up in this situation wasn’t surprising.
Bertha sighed, “Mom, don’t be foolish anymore.”
“I… burdened you.” Mrs. Swift thought of the events from last night and her impulsive act, tears starting to fall again.
When Adam returned, he saw Mrs. Swift with reddened eyes, and Bertha looking downcast. He frowned slightly, stepping forward to ruffle Bertha’s hair, “Co and have so food with Auntie.”
“Okay.” Bertha was still not quite used to Adam’s affectionate gestures, especially in front of her mother, instinctively trying to dodge. But Adam had already withdrawn his hand and was serving food to the two won.
His actions were sowhat clumsy, as it was his first ti buying food for soone in a hospital, a blend of novelty and awkwardness. Bertha watched, and the negative emotions from the conversation with her mother dissipated sowhat, so she helped Adam open the al boxes, and the three of them made do with their al.
In the morning, Adam had to finish filming the remaining scenes. As it was the wrap-up scene, everything had been pre-set, and he couldn’t take leave. On the other hand, Bertha, with an injured face, even without her mother’s illness, would need to take leave, so she stayed at the hospital to care for her mother.
Before leaving, Adam looked at Bertha, “Rember to reach out to if anything happens.”
Bertha nodded, not really taking Adam’s words to heart. Having only been with Adam for a day, she had already let him see her family’s ss, feeling sowhat uncomfortable.
Even though she knew Adam understood the Swift’s situation, knowing was one thing; seeing it firsthand was another, especially watching her and Milne in conflict, witnessing her mother self-harm because of her father and that ho-wrecker, which made her feel ashad.
Even if it wasn’t her fault.
Adam saw that Bertha’s mind was elsewhere and pulled her into a hug, “Even if everyone says I’m good-for-nothing, just a dandy, at least I can still protect you guys.”
“You’re great.” Bertha retorted without thinking, her attitude more serious than before.
Adam chuckled lightly, teasingly calling her silly before leaving the hospital.
Once Adam left, Bertha took out her phone and dialed Milne Swift’s number.
She didn’t need to guess to know why her mother had an emotional breakdown last night and attempted suicide. Milne must have threatened her mother using her. That old bastard’s only remaining skill was bullying won.
The phone barely rang before it was picked up, with Milne’s irritable voice coming through, “You little bitch, did you make Adam Piers do sothing to our family?”
Since last night, he’d received several calls breaking contracts. This morning, a seemingly foolproof investnt, into which he had poured most of the family’s assets, suddenly went wrong. Now, suspecting it was related to the Piers family, he received Bertha’s call and imdiately took out his anger on her.
Bertha listened to her father ranting like a mad dog over the phone, moving it aside until he finally stopped to catch his breath, before bringing it back to her ear, “Finished cursing? I don’t know if what happened with the Swift projects has anything to do with the Piers family. But what did you say to my mom last night? Milne Swift, I’ve told you not to ss with and my mom. Since you’ve already taken Adam’s thirty million, you’d better hold onto it and stop dreaming of getting anything from , or who ends up worse is yet to be seen!”
“Is this how you talk to your father?” Milne Swift was furious.
But Bertha rely chuckled, “Didn’t I make it clear last night? When you took that thirty million from Adam and hit , our ties were severed. And keep your shaless woman in check, don’t let her provoke my mom!”
“You ungrateful brat, I should have strangled you when I had the chance—to stop you from ruining …”
“Who would choose to be your daughter?” Bertha sneered.
Milne Swift beca even more enraged, unleashing a tirade of harsh curses over the phone, with the ho-wrecker adding fuel to the fire in the background. Hearing this, Bertha coldly hung up.
Frustrated, Milne Swift’s anger boiled over, and just then, his assistant cautiously brought the phone over with excitent, “General Manager Miller, it’s a call from the Piers’ young master.”
Milne’s curses halted, his eyes lighting up, “Who?”
The well-maintained woman beside him cheerfully chid in, “Congratulations, darling, the company is saved!”
