Lai Wenyan’s anger shot up as he relayed that Jiang Yuan said the paperwork was done but then Tang Li was nowhere to be found; and when called, no one answered. Upon calling again, Jiang Yuan realized he had been blocked.
Lai Wenyan looked up at Lai Shengxia: “Call your sister imdiately.”
Lai Shengxia knew he was referring to Tang Li.
She took out her cellphone from her bag and dialed the number, but the call went to voicemail indicating that the phone was off.
Lai Wenyan tried the landline phone too, but with the sa result.
For a mont, the atmosphere in the living room turned tense.
Even though it hadn’t been explicitly stated, Lai Hongshan and his wife sensed sothing was up. Lai Hongshan spoke first: “Is it for Ah Li? Let’s try with my phone.”
Lai Shengxia recounted Tang Li’s number.
Lai Hongshan entered it, and then pressed the green call button.

Ouyang Qian glanced at her husband: “Since she had agreed to the adoption, your father and I didn’t think too much of it, so we let Assistant Jiang take her directly to the police station.”
