Chapter 126: Chapter 123 Grandma (Third Watch)

Seeing the woman, Yu Heng got up to wave his hand, “Mom…”

It was Mu Chenyan!

Song Jiawen sat stiffly at the table, not turning around.

Jiang Yan glanced at her before turning to look at Mu Chenyan, who was striding over.

The imagined rich lady and national painting master, graceful, luxurious, and so young that her real age couldn’t be discerned… did not exist. The woman before him had greying hair. Perhaps because she had walked too quickly on her way here, or maybe due to nervousness, her temples and forehead were damp with hair sticking to her cheeks. Dressed in a black long-sleeved top and trousers, with noticeable mud spots on her pants and a wrinkled shirt, she looked quite disheveled.

But a pair of large eyes with clear dark circles were filled with hope as they looked at Song Jiawen…

Mu Chenyan reached the table, and even before sitting down, her eyes, having caught a glimpse of Song Jiawen as she entered the door, never strayed from her.

“Please, sit down first.”

Yu Heng gave up the inside seat to let Mu Chenyan sit down. He opened his mouth wanting to explain or say sothing, but saw his mom’s eyes brimming with tears streaming down her face. Trembling, she reached out, wanting to grab Song Jiawen but retracted her hand just before touching her arm. With tear-blurred eyes, she pointed at a faint scar on her forearm, sobbing, “This is where your second brother accidentally cut you with a knife while peeling an apple… Your skin is delicate, and you bled a lot at that ti. Your grandma was very angry and wanted to punish your second brother with a feather duster. You were crying a lot but still pleaded on your brother’s behalf…”

There indeed was such an event, the second child was cunning, always able to make Xiaosi side with him.

Grandma?

Song Jiawen raised her head in confusion. Why was there no mory of this elderly person in her mind?

Had she forgotten her grandma?

She looked at Mu Chenyan. In contrast to the other’s uncontrollable excitent, her calmness seed sowhat cold-blooded.

“Can you stop crying for a mont? I want to ask, how can you be so sure that I am your daughter?”

With that question asked, Mu Chenyan beca even more agitated, “Of course, I can be sure. I rember clearly what my daughter would look like, her facial features, her eyes, nose, mouth, whether it’s ten years or twenty, I would recognize her… Xiaosi, you…”

Mu Chenyan reached out both hands, and though separated by the table, she still longed for an embrace.

But Song Jiawen avoided it, even standing up as if she wanted to run out, appearing extrely unsettled.

However, Jiang Yan was blocking the way outside, causing her to hesitate in her seat.

Mu Chenyan was stunned for a mont and quickly stood up, “Xiaosi…”

But her daughter and the young man hurried away.

Yu Heng knew why Xiaosi had refused their mother’s embrace and left; his face darkened as he grabbed Mu Chenyan, who wanted to chase after them, “Mom, there’s sothing I need to tell you.”

“What is it? Tell

later, can’t you see your sister is leaving? Move aside.”

“It’s related to Xiaosi’s disappearance years ago.”

Upon hearing this, Mu Chenyan’s footsteps halted, and she looked up at her eldest son…

On the other side, after leaving the coffee shop, Song Jiawen walked very quickly. She rushed into the school without watching where she was going, just heading straight ahead. It wasn’t until she ca to her senses that she realized she wasn’t on the way back to her dormitory.

She looked up blankly at the unfamiliar surroundings, fear welling up inside of her in an instant.

Fortunately, Jiang Yan was right behind her. Seeing her stop, he quickly approached and looked down at her feet, asking, “Does your foot not hurt anymore?”

She had walked so quickly just now that she evidently had forgotten the blisters on her foot.

“It hurts.”

Upon seeing Jiang Yan, the fear in her heart instantly dissipated, yet in the next mont she grabbed the hem of his clothes, “Carry

on your back.”

“Let

take a look at your foot. It’ll get better by tomorrow if we pop the blisters now.”

Song Jiawen nodded.

Jiang Yan looked around and noticed that the only place nearby where they could sit was a small pavilion ahead, lit by a streetlamp, but there was already a couple hugging and being affectionate inside.

He didn’t care and led Song Jiawen straight in. Under the astonished gaze of the couple, he had Song Jiawen sit on the stone bench opposite them. Then he sat down next to her, bent over to take off her shoes and socks, and carefully lifted her foot to examine the soles in the light of the streetlamp.

The innocent couple that had been disturbed: …

The girl humphed in displeasure, turning her head towards her boyfriend, with the obvious intention of making him speak up.

But infuriatingly, her boyfriend was staring blankly at the girl opposite them.

The girl suddenly stood up and, huffing angrily, turned and ran out of the pavilion.

The boy ca to his senses and hurriedly got up to chase after her.

As for the two left in the pavilion, they felt not even the slightest guilt for driving others away; it was as if nothing had happened at all. One sat with legs lifted and head half-bowed, one arm bracing on the stone table to support the upper body.

The other kept his attention fully on the crystal white little feet in his hands, not even glancing at the couple once.

After a careful examination, he reluctantly put one foot down and placed the other on his knee, whispering softly, “There are two blisters on this one. Shall I pop them?”

Song Jiawen nodded, though by her expression it seed she hadn’t heard a word he said.

Jiang Yan pressed down the unusual thoughts welling up in his heart, took out a pack of tissues from his pocket, and pinched the center of a blister between the nail of his thumb and forefinger, causing fluid to gush out imdiately.

“It hurts…”

Having spoken, Song Jiawen’s eyes suddenly overflowed with tears like floodgates opening…

Since his rebirth, this was the first ti Jiang Yan had seen her cry, or rather, the first ti she had cried in front of others.

He looked up at her once, then continued to drain the other blister before cleaning it with a tissue, carefully putting the sock back on, and then lowering her foot.

Jiang Yan silently pulled out another tissue to wipe away the endless tears on her face, feeling his own heart ache as he watched her cry uncontrollably.

Her previous thought was right—this kinship should not have been acknowledged!

Close to nine o’clock, Jiang Yan carried Song Jiawen on his back to send her to the female dormitory. Before parting, he reminded her, “Don’t forget to put a sanitary pad in your shoes when you get back, and also, don’t think about anything, just have a good sleep.”

Having cried her heart out, the gloominess inside her had lessened significantly, and now Song Jiawen felt much more at ease than before.

Fortunately, everyone was exhausted today. When she returned to the dormitory, Liang Yujun and the other two were already sleeping hazily, and no one noticed her slightly swollen eyes.

Song Jiawen washed her face in the bathroom and quickly tidied up before climbing into bed.

She had thought she would toss and turn, unable to fall asleep, but in just a few minutes she had drifted off into slumber.

Perhaps it was because Mu Chenyan had ntioned her grandmother earlier that night, but in Song Jiawen’s dream appeared a kindly old lady with a compassionate face, her silver hair coiled up at the back of her head, holding a small carving knife, expertly working on a piece of wood while saying to her, “Xiaosi likes foxes, right? Watch closely, grandma will carve it for you soon…”
