When Adrian’s words about a vile distorted god being prayed to was said, the others except for Altum were shocked. The people of the ocean and seas only worship the gods of the oceans or seas. They will never let any being that live in the oceans and seas be a follower of the others.
Altum is not persecuted because he is a Champion of the Deep and the God of the Deep Dagon is now considered one of the gods of the oceans and seas. The land dwellers do not get any notice from them since the water dwellers know that there are different customs. If it is a water dweller worshipping a distorted god or dark god, then the inquisitors are summoned.
Those that worship gods that are not of this world or this universe are all punished by the inquisitors. The water dwellers all believe that life started at the oceans and seas hence they should only worship the gods of oceans and seas. If they were to be known to worship other gods beside them then their entire bloodline will be erased. This is the reason why there are no longer any followers of the dark god or distorted god in the world below.
This is what they have thought but Adrian is actually telling them that Coral is a follower of a dark god or distorted god. The fact that a royal guard is a follower of the dark gods or distorted god is something that could put the merfolk kingdom into scrutiny across other kingdoms. This would be a slap in the face against the merfolk royal family.
"What you said... is it true? This is a heavy accusation." Renyu stated as she did not know that souls cannot lie towards Adrian.
The souls of the dead can stay silent or actually divert what they say but they are unable to lie when they are before the Ruler of Limbo. The judge of the souls that designate which death realm they go to or straight to reincarnation. His ability to force souls to tell the truth might be weaker if he is in the mortal realm but the most basic function of being unable to tell lies towards him should still be active.
"If you tell the me your plan on why you attempted to kill the princess of the Scylla Kingdom then I might help you with the condition of your soul. If not, you will have your soul devoured by the corruption that you have accepted in your body. Let me guess... the reason that you could bee a royal guard is due to the fact that you have worshipped a dark god. Or maybe, the other people in the hardliners are actually worshippers of dark gods in secret." Adrian stated as he looked at Coral’s soul that started to tremble.
"Do you think that I will say it! Your power might be mighty but you cannot keep me bound! My people have already succeeded when no army has marched to this place!" Coral’s soul shouted.
"If you say so." Adrian stated as he no longer protected the soul of the being that he trapped.
Adrian’s energy that protected the soul vanished and the mark of the corrupted blazed through the soul body of Coral. She emitted a terrifying shrill as her entire body suddenly felt like it was being melted by acid. The corrupted mark on her body looked like it was a sludge that devoured the soul of its host.
"What is happening to me! HELP! SAVE ME!" Coral’s soul shouted as those that witnessed it could only give a look of horror.
The beautiful mermaid body that should glisten suddenly look extremely tainted by the sludge. The corals on her body pletely melted and gone with her scales on the tail being damaged. Her lower body started to look like it was rotting and it even created an odor despite her being a soul already. This was the true price of corruption that the followers of the dark gods do not know.
The players of the Dark Gods and Distorted God side do not pay this price since they can revive but the NPCs all experience this. The price for the power that they receive is all paid in the end when their lives are lost. If they do not die then they do not pay the price but the dark gods and distorted gods do not care about this.
For the dark gods and distorted gods, the longer their follower lives then the more they can sacrifice to it. If the follower dies then their soul is just forfeit from the cycle of reincarnation. The dark gods and distorted gods do not lose in the end and they just bee stronger. Add on to the faith energy being sent to them then it is of no shock that the dark gods or distorted gods can descend much easier pared to other gods.
"I WILL TELL THE TRUTH! THE OTHERS LIKE ME! THEY PLANNED ALL OF THIS! THEY WANT THE PRINCESS TO DIE FOR WAR TO CONTINUE! TO OFFER THE HARVESTED SOULS TO OUR GOD!" Coral shouted but she spoke too late as the black sludge that devoured her soul finally swallowed her head.
A malevolent specter made of black sludge then manifested instead of Coral’s soul. A being of another dimension is created and it wanted to escape from the prison that Adrian created. Charon suddenly perked up as he manifested and eyed the malevolent specter before looking towards Adrian.
"If you need it then be my guest. The soul of that mermaid has already been consumed and that thing is not made out of the soul of this realm." Adrian stated as Charon eyed the malevolent sludge specter as food.
Charon then opened his cloak to reveal a large mouth and teeth that terrified those that looked at it straight. All of the them except for Adrian looked away or else they will be affected by fear. In the end, Charon devoured the malevolent sludge specter. He was very satisfied as he returned looking like the chained belt Adrian is wearing.
[Charon has devoured something nutritious.]
[Charon’s abilities increased by a small amount.]
Seeing the two notifications, Adrian can only smile as it brought benefit to Charon. He then thought of a terrifying thing of feeding those with corrupted souls to Charon but then he would be labeled a heretic by the gods of death. The only reason he could let Charon devour the soul is due to the fact that it has transformed to another being that is not of this world. He had a duty to purge the being and Charon was just the closest one to do it.
"One would be fine but they might raise ethical concerns if I force the other corrupted souls. They will not really say anything if those corrupted have been devoured by the corruption. There may be other chances and I only need to wait." Adrian thought as Renyu suddenly approached him.
"I think we may need to pause our travel for a moment. We are already near the Forbidden Ocean entrance but the news of Princess Drona is not something we can take lightly. The territories of the Scylla and the Merfolk border the area that you want to check. If war really does happen then we would not be able to go to the location you pinged me." Renyu stated.
"So, you want us to deliver the princess back to the Scylla Kingdom for a moment?" Adrian stated and Renyu nodded.
"What about you, Altum? Is that fine with you? Even if I am your guild leader, this is still a party with just the three of us. I will go with what the majority decide because I am not really bothered about sending the princess back. It might even give us more insight on the barrier that Renyu described." Adrian added as he looked towards Altum.
"I think sending the princess back to her kingdom would be the safest option for now. I am not familiar with these waters and having the support of the Scylla Kingdom is not bad." Altum stated.
"Since we are all in agreement, we should send the princess back to her kingdom. Will the journey take long?" Adrian asked.
"If we go with our usual speed then a few hours should suffice but that is our speed. The princess and her guards cannot travel as fast as us." Renyu stated but Adrian just smiled.
"You do not need to worry about that. Wisteria, please grow bigger to acmodate all of us." Adrian stated as Wisteria suddenly grew to the size of a football field pared to the size before that is only that of a car.
The large spirit dragon turtle glowed in fairy pinkish lights and made her look like a majestic ocean creature that lives in seclusion. The eyes of Princess Drona glistened as she came on top of Wisteria’s shell even without being asked.
