Chapter 762: Not A Legacy, A Promise. (Ch.763)

The explosion distorted the air, sending wild ripples through the Fae’s spellwork. Their intricately woven spell rune combusted in one sudden surge, shattering completely like sothing had just ripped through it. As the spell fell apart, an eerie silence dawned.

Had they made a mistake? Woven the rune wrong? Or was there sothing more at work? Sothing they had failed to notice?

These questions must have crossed the minds of the Fae, watching one of their most powerful and ancient rune spells fall apart right before their eyes, without any visible cause.

One mont, the rune was close to reaching its peak strength, swallowing up all of Inferno in its toxic fus, and the next, sparks of magic rained down all around them, all that was left of their rune spell following the explosion.

For a single mont after that, nothing happened. The Fae were stunned in their confusion, the Infernal dragons held their breath. But Neveah stood with a detached expression, watching... waiting.

And then chaos erupted.

The mana pools, once shimring wells of raw magic imploding one after the other at a stable interval, soon began collapsing all at once. With the consecutive combustions, powerful surges of mana were released, wave after wave of corrupted energy far more than any Fae could withstand.

The entirety of Inferno trembled as magic lashed out unrestrained. What had been a pool of abundant magic energy to tap into soon beca a suction, draining all magic that it could touch to restore its own stability.

The backlash was uncontrolled, its victims every magic trace that had linked to it or drawn from it. The Fae magic unit was struck first, magic ant to bend reality at their will now turned against them with rciless ferocity.

Dozens of hovering Fae convulsed mid air, torn between the surges of corrupted magic forced into their veins and the mana pools draining their own pure magic essence in exchange. Magic to the Fae was tied to their very life force, their very existence, and the clash of energies was beyond what most could withstand.

Dozens of the Fae disintegrated under the weight of overpowering magic, bursting into raw arcs of light and others plumted from their hovering formation like falling stars.

The sky that once bled with the corrupted fus they had woven now began to ripple as their spell lost coherence, unraveling into chaotic spirals that lashed out unpredictably.

Lord Kiroff’s jaws tightened, understanding dawned on him at this mont. If the dragons had refused the order to retreat for their pride and remained anywhere near that vicinity, even without magic ties to the mana pools, they would not escape the lashing fus and explosions of magic and perhaps et their end alongside the Fae.

The Fae magic unit was not the only one affected. The barrier unit who had tapped into the mana pools consistently to reinforce their barrier before it was finally shattered faced their own share of magic tribulation. Their magic drained to suit the voracious appetite of the mana pools.

As abundant as the magic energy the mana pools provided, so was its hunger for magic insatiable as its effect was reversed and it now took instead of giving.

The combat unit and the forest spirits fared only slightly better as they had only just arrived. But what kind of race was the Fae? Their natural connection to magic betrayed them at this mont.

The massive beasts reared and howled, their antlered heads thrashing as venom frothed at their muzzles. More than a few dozen turned on their riders, maddened by the sudden surge of uncontrolled mana.

From her vantage point, Neveah took in the grueso scene. Every death, every unraveling thread of the battle she had so carefully woven into place. But she could not find any ounce of satisfaction within her... perhaps this was not the ti for it, perhaps there would never be a ’ti’.

A small swirling jump portal materializing right on the watchtower announced the presence of Lord Egwain, the head of the academy of magic. He stepped onto the watchtower, his robes whipping around him. His eyes went wide as he took in the chaos unfolding amongst the Fae.

The forest spirits were out of control, charging through the forest. They would be in the middle district if left unhindered, and they were led by a few dozen combat unit warriors desperate to escape the death space the forest had beco.

Now that their own magic had turned on them, summoning a portal in that chaos was seeking death and they knew it. They could only get away in this manner. Neveah could sense their wrath...thirst for vengeance. They would not spare the commoners in their path.

’It seems the Infernal dragons will get their battle after all.’ Neveah thought.

Neveah could practically feel the restlessness of the Infernal dragons. They were ready to tear through what remained of the enemy force, but the lingering toxic fus was still a threat.

"Your Grace..."

"I know." Neveah said. "I will entrust the safety of the dragon lords to your mages... protect them, while they end this."

"As you command." Lord Egwain bowed.

When he straightened again, his expression was steely. With a single motion, he raised his hands and the mages stationed on the watchtower followed suit.

Threads of magic, ford of their various elents spun to life. They had not tapped into the mana pools since arriving inferno and so their magic was unaffected.

The threads spread outward like a vast net, catching the lingering fus. The toxic fus twisted and recoiled, as it was burned away by the sheer purity of the spell.

The fus were rapidly expelled and as the mana pools regained stability, Lord Kiroff shifted restlessly where he stood behind Neveah.

Neveah breathed a sigh and turned to him. She didn’t say a word but nodded her consent.

There was no hesitation. The Infernal dragons lining the watchtower dove, shooting for the forest and hunting down the fleeing Fae.

It was like watching vengeance take shape.

Freed from the burden of poisoned air, the Infernal dragons unleashed their full might.

Fire rained down in great torrents, incinerating everything it touched. The Fae unlucky enough to survive the magic backfire would et their fate in the unforgiving flas.

So of the Fae tried to summons defences against the raging flas, but their magic was sluggish, unresponsive, crippled by the backfire that had ravaged their ranks.

"Contain the fire. Do not let it spread to human settlents." Neveah instructed Lord Egwain.

The mages complied imdiately, summoning barriers that contained the battle within the allowed space.

Neveah’s fingers curled around the edge of the stone railing, her pulse steady despite the storm of battle that raged below. She had told the mages they would not fail her...they hadn’t.

One by one, the Fae battalions fell. So tried to flee, their forces breaking apart in disarray, but there was no salvation waiting for them beyond the battlefield. The infernal dragons tore through their ranks, fire and claw carving through what little resistance remained.

And the mages supplied swift aid wherever the flas spread beyond control.

For the first ti in the history of the stronghold, the mages and dragons fought in true unison.

And together, they had turned the tide.

"Fire and blood..." Neveah whispered, the words no longer just a legacy, but a promise.

It was not just a phrase, but a vow...a pledge to honour the stronghold by eradicating its enemies.

To honour their king by delivering victory in his na.

To engrave in the pages of history that dragon dynasty would never lower their head again.

To remind the world that just one fate lay on the other end of the spectrum.

"Fire and blood." Xenon echoed the words. His gaze fixed on Neveah deepened with reverence.
