Chapter 285: A Fight (Ch.285)
Dante stord through the forest, putting the Nymph settlent farther behind them with each agitated step forward.
There was a dark expression on his face and he exuded an agitated aura, all the while, he had not glanced back even once.
Through this ti, Estelle hurried to keep up with his powerful strides, as that was all she could do given Dante’s terrible mood.
Estelle had attempted to start a conversation multiple tis, but each ti she was completely ignored by Dante and Estelle felt deeply uneasy.
She could not understand why exactly Dante was so furious, not that he did not have reason to be, she just did not know what exactly to attribute his anger to.
"Dante, slow down." Estelle tried again, practically jogging to keep up with Dante’s swift strides.
Again, Estelle received no response and frustration bubbled up in her heart and a desperate need to get a word out of Dante, so she could understand what displeased him.
"Dante, can you just say sothing? We’ve been walking for hours and you won’t even say a word!" Estelle exclaid in frustration.
Dante just continued on as though he could not hear Estelle’s words.
"Scales! Say sothing Dante! If you’re mad at , I should at least know why!" Estelle insisted, unable to overlook being ignored by Dante.
Estelle’s efforts were fruitless as Dante had no intentions of saying a word, he was completely focused on getting them out of the forest.
Now that Estelle thought of it, she realized it would have been much easier for them to ask for a guide out of the forest but Dante had taken off before Estelle could even think clearly.
Estelle was not certain if it was the return of his dragon side that put Dante on edge, or if it was sothing else.
"Are you angry at ... because I lied about us being a couple?" Estelle asked cautiously.
Dante paused in his step for a mont but then continued on.
Estelle could swear Dante was about to say sothing but had chosen to shrug it off instead.
"Given the situation, I had no choice. It was the only way I could convince the druid nymphs to help... I’m sorry, okay... just don’t be like that with ." Estelle pleaded.
Dante still ignored Estelle’s words and her apology as well and Estelle was left with no idea of what to do or say.
In all the ti Estelle had known Dante, she had never faced his displeasure or disapproval and she was not sure how to deal with it.
"Dante..." Estelle tried again but was cut off by an annoyed grunt.
"I would appreciate so silence, Lady Starron. I need to focus and you are not helping." Dante interrupted without glancing back.
Estelle felt as though she had been hit right in the gut, Dante would only address her so formally if he was extrely displeased.
"Not until you tell
what I did wrong! You’re being cruel! What do you want
to do?!" Estelle demanded.
"Walk faster! For starters and then so silence, if you can manage." Dante replied, still without glancing back.
"Dante, what has gotten into you?! This isn’t you!" Estelle cried out in frustration.
"What would you say is ’’ then?" Dante asked in a blank tone.
The question gave Estelle pause, but it lasted for only a short mont.
"You would have asked how my wound is healing! You would have comforted
and promised to teach the High Maiden a lesson! And you never yell at !" Estelle blurted out in a sob.
"I cannot deal with this right now." Dante murmured beneath his breath as he sped up.
"You can’t be like this to ! I did everything to save you! All I did was to save you!" Estelle insisted, hurrying to catch up with Dante.
"I do not rember asking you to endanger yourself to save , that is not how this works." Dante countered.
"How does this work then?!" Estelle demanded.
"I protect you, rember?! I do not let you get hurt! I keep you safe, that is how it works!" Dante snapped back.
"What about you then? Who keeps you safe?!" Estelle hissed, grabbing hold of Dante’s arm to stop him from moving.
She could not believe after all they had just gone through, they would be having a fight.
"Since when do you care?! That has always been my own problem. You acting out of character is unnecessary. Just be the way you have always been... selfish and bratty." Dante replied.
With Estelle, Dante knew he would always be the one making the efforts and he had let it be that way, as long as she was safe.
This sudden change, Dante was not certain what aning he could read to it and more than that, he did not appreciate how deeply moved he was.
The severing had completely drained Dante emotionally, he could not handle any suspicious feelings at this ti...he did not wish to.
The thought of Estelle going out of her way to protect him had stirred a strange tenderness, Dante knew for sure that was not his usual tender care for a dear friend.
’This forest must have so lecherous spirits about making
feel strange, the sooner I am out of here, the sooner I can get a clear head.’
’Attracted to Elle? The sa Elle I danced naked in the rain with in our youth? The sa Elle who had
fly from the borders to fetch towels for her first blood flow?... I must be losing my mind.’ Dante decided in his thoughts with a shudder of horror.
Dante had not realized how harsh his words had sounded till Estelle gasped quietly and took a shaky step back and away from Dante.
Dante was about to assure her he did not an those words but he quickly shook his head, turning and continuing on his way.
"Don’t you dare walk away from , you bastard!" Estelle sobbed out, her words stopping Dante in his step.
The sight of Dante walking out on her was far too much for Estelle, not after all the terrors she had endured in the past week.
Dante was all Estelle had left, she also knew it. Estelle had to wonder when it had all gone wrong, when had she begun letting everyone who cared for her down?
But Estelle did not need to ask, she knew exactly when. After Estelle’s mother passed, Estelle had changed completely.
She had shut everyone out including Dante and her father, blaming everything and everyone she could for her loss.
That grief and despair made the bright and cheerful Estelle into a new person, a person that cared for no one but herself and placed her own needs before everyone else’s.
Thinking about it, Estelle knew it was a miracle Dante had not lost patience with her ages ago, like everyone else, he believed when the grief passed, Estelle would return to being herself.
But that had never happened, even a decade after.
"I also know I have been difficult to cope with. It wasn’t always this way between us... when mother was here, I was a true friend to you." Estelle reasoned in a shaky tone, grasping at straws.
"You changed Elle, you have for a long ti now. What use is there to speak of it now?" Dante asked with a sigh.
"I understand it now, I do! The mont I woke up and could not find you anywhere, I recalled just how precious you are to
Dante."
"More than you know! More than I knew until now!... I cannot lose you too...so do not be cold to , not now..." Estelle pleaded.
There were many more words she wanted to say, so much more Estelle needed to say but she could not bring herself to say them.
"We will not have this discussion now, we must head to keep skies." Dante said with a heavy sigh, glancing around him for a mont.
"We will not be out of here anyti soon at this pace... flight is our best option." Dante decided.
"Flight? Are you sure about that?" Estelle asked uncertainly, she knew what it ant to a dragon to have soone ride them.
"Have you a better option? Because I do not. The situation demands it, necessity is the only aning attached." Dante replied.
Estelle winced slightly, she was not certain why Dante’s words were so hard to hear when what he said was the fact.
"We should find a larger space, I will hurt my wing taking off here." Dante murmured as he made to continue.
"No..." Estelle replied quietly.
"No? What is that to an?" Dante asked in bafflent.
"I... I do not want it to be out of necessity." Estelle continued, her tone still low.
Estelle’s words gave Dante stop and he passed her a confused look.
"If not necessity, then what?" Dante asked, completely ignorant of Estelle’s aning.
"You fool...why is it so hard for you to understand anything?" Estelle grumbled beneath her breath.
