"Jin, will we get caught?"
At this mont, a girl, her body wrapped in bandages, eyes swollen to re slits, and a large patch of hair missing from her head, clung to the young man’s back, her voice weak.
HUFF... HUFF...
Heavy, ragged breaths emanated from the limping young man’s chest.
He said with conviction, "No, Annie. As long as we can escape Los Angeles, you can start a new life."
A night of constant fighting and travel had nearly drained the combat knife expert of his energy.
"What about you?"
The girl was very perceptive and imdiately sensed the unspoken words behind his statent.
Just as the young man was about to explain—THUD, THUD, THUD! Heavy, urgent footsteps rapidly approached from behind.
The young man’s pupils constricted. Such speed!
Never mind that I’m carrying soone and I’m exhausted; even if I weren’t, with my injured right foot, I definitely can’t reach the designated exit before they catch up!
So be it! A look of determination flashed in his eyes. He gently lowered the girl from his back. "Annie, soone’s catching up. You go on ahead. Carrying you will only distract !"
The girl gave a dismal laugh. "Do you think I could leave by myself in this condition? Just leave , Jin. If we’re going to die today, I want to die with you... as long as you don’t mind my being dirty!"
"I don’t!"
The young man moved to a corner and set Annie down. He slowly drew a slender combat knife from his waist. Under the dim light, it reflected an eerie, pale blue glow. He positioned himself in front of her, switched off his light, closed his eyes to regulate his breathing, and waited for the unknown pursuer.
For the one I cherish in my heart!
Whoever cos today, dies!
Positioned in a blind spot, the young man was absolutely confident.

THUD, THUD, THUD... The heavy footsteps echoed, drawing ever closer.
In a few seconds at most, the pursuer will round this corner and be impaled by my blade.
Suddenly, the footsteps vanished.
The young man snapped open his eyes, his face etched with confusion.
Could they know I’m waiting in ambush?
A sense of unease surfaced in his heart for the first ti.
Can I really get Annie out of here safely today, with just this combat knife?
Just as his mind reeled in turmoil, a white light flashed from around the corner.
In that instant, all stray thoughts vanished from the young man’s mind. He lunged forward, his combat knife a blur. Moving so fast it traced a thin blue line in the air, it whistled faintly as he delivered a flurry of thrusts.
In the blink of an eye, the tip of his knife had grazed several vital points on a human body, at different heights.
But the feeling of striking nothing caused the young man’s expression to change drastically.
Shit! I’ve been tricked!
SPLASH! The lamp head, the source of the white light he had just attacked, crashed into the sewage, bathing the area in a ghastly pallor.
In the young man’s despairing gaze, a handso man stood just a few ters away. He held a gun, head tilted, and smiled. "Done playing around? If so, I’m going to shoot."
At this distance, ard only with his combat knife and his strength completely spent from that last burst of effort... It’s an insurmountable gap!
At this mont, I bitterly regret not learning how to use a gun!
He looked at Dean, unwilling to accept defeat. "How did you know I was waiting for you here?"
"Your combat knife work is fast and decisive," Dean replied, "but your ssy footprints betrayed your condition. An ambush was your best option. That’s why you lost."
