Jimmy had been observing Byrne, who flipped through so papers in Watson's office and then picked up the phone. After a while, he hung up, then crouched down and opened the safe beneath the cabinet. Jimmy had seen this safe before during previous visits to Watson's office, when Watson had taken no notice of him scanning every item in the room.
Byrne took sothing out of the safe, put it in his backpack, and then turned and left Watson's office.
"Bang bang" two gunshots sounded, and Jimmy turned Heart Eye's gaze toward the direction from which the gunfire ca, the command center. He saw a figure charging toward the glass door—the shots had apparently been aid at the glass—and watched the figure shatter the glass and break out. It was Kerry.
Kerry ran straight to Watson's office and quickly picked up a phone to make a call. Chaos ensued as people began to run from floors above and below, opting to use the fire escape stairs instead of waiting for the elevator. Jimmy couldn't see further from there.
Although he couldn't see, Jimmy could guess their response.
The current situation must have been triggered by opening the safe, which activated so chanism alerting Watson that soone had entered his office. That was why Kerry was dispatched to inspect. Having discovered the open safe and missing contents, Kerry naturally called Watson and then began to arrange for everyone to lock down the building and possibly even the surrounding blocks.
The Anti-Terrorism Bureau is nominally under the Departnt of Holand Security, so shutting down a city block temporarily isn't really a problem. Jimmy wasn't surprised, but it was clear they were going to fail because Byrne had already run off by the ti Kerry was heading toward Watson's office. With that ti difference, he had enough ti to leave the building and escape outside.
Jimmy did not get up and reveal himself, as the building was now nearly empty, with only a few remaining in the command center and so in offices who had not been mobilized. If he showed himself now, he was likely to be asked to assist them.
Clearly, this was a CIA internal affair. Jimmy had stayed in the office for a long ti and hadn't received a call or a visit. It seed Watson believed this was a CIA matter and did not need Jimmy, an FBI agent, to intervene. Thus, Jimmy could only watch them bustling in the command center through Heart Eye.
The most active was clearly the only person standing, Kerry, although Jimmy could only guess from his build, but the one in command on the scene must be Kerry alone.
After waiting a while longer, nearing noon, Mahong called to inquire about Jimmy's status. He hadn't shown up for work as usual, and Mahong, having not seen him by noon, finally had to make a call to ensure everything was alright, considering what would happen if there was another attack on such a day—it required a firm response.
Fortunately, upon learning that Jimmy was assigned to handle so matters by Hughes, although bypassing Mahong was sowhat disrespectful, he could understand. A man like Jimmy certainly held a significant place in Hughes's estimation; being assigned such tasks ant no one else could handle it.
By lunchti, Jimmy hadn't gone down to eat; he continued to wait in the conference room, only leaving for the restroom and never leaving the room.
Hughes's call finally ca. Jimmy had heard nothing all morning, and even the composed Hughes was a bit worried. Learning that Watson had left due to an ergency and that Jimmy had been in the conference room the whole morning, Hughes said nothing more but asked Jimmy to be patient.
Alright, Jimmy was also speculating: Hughes had given him a piece of paper with a phone number that he had morised. Now, the biggest question was, whose number was it that Hughes was so anxious to have him handle?
Jimmy knew Hughes wanted to keep it confidential, so he didn't investigate through FBI channels. The Anti-Terrorism Bureau, being able to access the National Security Bureau's resources, theoretically had the easiest access to comprehensive data aside from direct NSA requests.
Also, he wondered what exactly had upset Hughes so much about this person that he had specifically targeted them; perhaps Hughes would co to him later for handling more matters, especially since he was getting older and handling major issues was likely too much for him, always needing to delegate to operational agents.
After waiting a bit more, Jimmy went downstairs to grab lunch from a street vendor before quickly returning; he still hadn't received any news from Watson's end.
It wasn't until the evening that Watson finally returned, but he appeared to be in a bad mood, probably because Byrne had escaped again.
Watching Watson return to his office, Jimmy finally stood up and left the conference room to head toward Watson's office. With the office having been invaded, it was necessary to give Watson so ti to organize. By the ti Jimmy reached the outside of Watson's office, Watson was already seated at his desk.
"Knock knock" Jimmy knocked on the door, Watson looked up and motioned him into the office, "Co in."
Watson: "Jimmy, you're still here? What's the matter?"
Jimmy: "Director Watson, Director Hughes sent to see you, he ntioned he's already spoken with you."
Watson paused for a mont, then nodded slowly, recognizing what was ntioned. Jimmy pulled the piece of paper from his pocket and placed it on Watson's desk.
Jimmy: "Director Watson, Director Hughes would like to return with this information."
