Jimmy pouted, estimating that Roland thought he would follow him, so he didn't tell him and went alone to check out that abandoned house.
Luckily, Jimmy had previously left a lot of cash with Roland, at least ensuring he could spend normally without any issues. If he wanted to buy sothing big, that would be a problem. When Roland was packing up in that small village, Jimmy had already noticed he had no money on him, just so unfamiliar currencies and coins, probably from the Dark Tower World, which would be useless here.
Besides his limited mobility, Roland didn't need Jimmy to worry about anything else. After all, he had been living here for more than a decade, going out surely wouldn't be a problem, but Nia's request was troubleso, and had to wait for his return.
However, before the night ca, Jimmy suddenly received a call. After a police officer introduced himself, he handed the phone to Roland, "Jimmy, I think I might need you to co to the police station."
Jimmy was startled: "What happened?"
Roland: "They say I'm carrying an undocunted ghost gun, and they said I could get a lawyer, so..."
Jimmy was speechless and asked him to give the phone to the police officer next to him. After giving his na and identity, he requested them not to make things difficult for Roland for the ti being, then hung up the phone and imdiately contacted Nia.
Nia was a bit confused after hearing Jimmy's words, but for the daughter of an NYPD Commissioner, making so arrangents was easy. While contacting people and going out, Nia also needed to be on the scene to bring Roland out.
Jimmy also left, figuring that it might not be convenient for Nia to bring Roland back. However, he did have a bit of a headache figuring out what exactly had happened for Roland to get caught by the police.
Nia's actions were quick. Roland only stayed in the temporary holding room for a while before a sergeant ca in and took him out, letting him stay in a small office while waiting. When Jimmy arrived, Roland was sipping water.
Flashing his badge, Jimmy made his way into the small office. After shaking hands with Jimmy, the sergeant left, closing the door behind, leaving only the two of them in the room.
Jimmy: "What happened?"
Roland said expressionlessly: "My gun is not registered, and I don't have a concealed carry permit (CCW)."
Jimmy: "You took a gun out with you?"
Roland: "Of course, this ti it was just an accident, soone saw it by mistake. Can you get my gun back? It was confiscated by the police."
Jimmy: "Tell in detail what exactly happened. Don't worry, Nia will handle it."
Roland: "I ran into a priest talking to soone outside, as the priest ca over to speak, my gun was accidentally exposed under my clothes. I couldn't just run away..."
This made sense. It's easy to forget that Roland is a black man, and even though he looks rather old and his movents are restricted, it's not uncommon for soone with a concealed gun to be reported. After all, to soone in a profession like a priest, Roland must have appeared to be a dangerous individual.
Jimmy shook his head with a smile: "You really are unlucky. Try not to go out for the ti being. If you have to go, at least let know so I can go with you to prevent things like this. By the way, did you an it when you said you'd teach Nia how to use a revolver? I've given her the gun to use."
Roland sighed, just about to speak when soone knocked on the door, opened it after just one knock, and ca in. It was Nia coming over, holding a black garbage bag. After closing the door, she handed it to Roland: "Your gun, check it."
Nia put the garbage bag on the table and pushed it toward Roland, then ca over to Jimmy. Roland opened the bag and glanced inside, finding his holster and two revolvers inside, but the bullets had already been removed, and the spare bullets on the holster were also gone.
Roland nodded, just about to tie the holster to himself, when Jimmy imdiately stopped him: "No, let hold on to it. Safety first."
Roland glanced at Nia, and she nodded: "The registration information has been voided, there's no problem this ti, but please don't get caught with it again."
Roland pushed the bag to Jimmy, who took it and asked: "Is everything settled? Can we go?"
Nia: "Anyti."
Jimmy nodded, got up, and pushed Roland's wheelchair, leaving the office together with Nia. The sergeant who had been in the room was at the door, only returning to his office after seeing them off.
Jimmy took Roland back, and after he and Nia returned ho, Nia pulled Jimmy to the study, "What did Roland use to do?"
Jimmy: "Why? He's just a hunter from Texas."
Nia shook her head: "He threatened a priest with a gun, telling him to get lost, and soone nearby witnessed it. Why is he so volatile? Brandishing a gun is not sothing to take lightly."
Jimmy was stunned, this didn't quite match what Roland had said earlier, "What about the priest?"
Nia: "I t him, reassured him, and ntioned we're getting married at St. Andrew's Church, which convinced him not to insist on pressing charges against Roland."
Jimmy: "The priest is at the station?"
Nia nodded: "A detective was about to investigate the matter but I stopped him. For now, there's no problem, but it's definitely a potential issue."
Jimmy took a couple of deep breaths before saying, "I'll talk to Roland, what's the priest's na? I'll find soone to put in a good word."
Nia told Jimmy the priest and church's na, then reiterated the importance of Jimmy communicating with Roland, as such behavior might easily attract trouble.
After Nia left the study, Jimmy plopped down on a chair. For Roland, who had spent several years in the Dark Tower World, he might have completely reverted to his old ways from back in that world.
From what Roland explained, that world seed to have an anarchic dieval style where might makes right. Such behavior in modern society would inevitably cause issues, and it's likely Roland wasn't even intentionally doing it—he just instinctively drew his weapon.
But why? With Roland's strength, why did he draw a weapon to threaten a priest? What did he do? Clearly, drawing the weapon was inappropriate, but what did that priest do to provoke him?
Jimmy sat and thought about it for a while, still unsure how to talk to Roland about it. It'd be best to first communicate with the priest to understand the whole story before bringing it up with Roland.
If it turns out Roland mindlessly threatened the priest with a gun, that would be troubling. Even though Jimmy had good relations with the church, mainly with exorcist priests, he rarely had contact with those involved in evangelizing and organizing church activities. To reach out and communicate properly, soone would need to make an introduction, and this troubleso task would inevitably fall to Father Rodney.
Jimmy checked the ti, then gave Father Rodney a call, setting up a eting for the next day. It had been a while since he last went to church, and dropping by to make an appearance wouldn't hurt either.
Roland returned to his room, putting the gun and holster in a bag, then moved himself onto the bed and lay down. This was a real hassle; it seed like soone was already living in that run-down house, but not anyone proper, more like vagrants or holess people.
The priest was actually delivering free food to the people inside. After a few words, Roland wanted to drive those people out, telling the priest not to bring them food anymore.
A random black guy trying to drive people off and criticizing the priest's charity—the priest clearly didn't respond well. Roland drew his gun on the spot. The priest, with a gun pointed at him, didn't insist any further, and after leaving, imdiately called the police, which led to all this trouble just now.
