"Do you think the ghost is scarier, or are you scarier?" Renz muttered, pouting. Ghosts didn't exist, and even if they did, they were only in the ga; they couldn't harm him. Erina, however, was real, and when she got angry, no one could stop her.
"Am I scary? What nonsense are you talking about?" Erina poked Renz indignantly.
"See? I say one thing, and you're already getting physical. Female dostic violence is still dostic violence, and your actions could lead to jail ti," Renz retorted forcefully while controlling his character. During co-op gaming, the banter was often the most entertaining part.
The two retrieved the school classroom key from the security room and followed the clues on a note, preparing to search classrooms one by one. If fully imrsed, this part would be quite terrifying, but Renz's constant quips slowly dissolved the otherwise dreadful atmosphere.
On the first floor of the teaching building, the hallway had sparse, dim yellow lights. Renz and Erina moved forward together. Suddenly, a hanging corpse dropped from the ceiling. Its neck was constricted by an unknown noose, its face purplish and contorted, and its body covered in countless scratches. This happened without warning. Erina, completely unprepared for such a sudden and bloody scene, let out a startled cry. Her character froze in place for a second.
"That's it? And you're still playing horror gas?" Renz remained calm and imdiately switched to taunting mode.
"Who would've thought sothing would fall from there? Any normal person would be startled, okay?" Erina naturally wasn't convinced. She was scared, but it wasn't her fault. If she had been prepared and knew where such a scene would occur, she definitely wouldn't have been scared.
"Alright then, you loot the body," Renz said to the person
beside him. In this ga, approaching any area would trigger a "loot" button, allowing players to find relevant items or mission information. Renz's words imdiately made Erina's confidence waver.
The fallen corpse had landed face down, revealing a horrifying face as it dropped. If she looted it, she would surely have to flip it over, which ant getting scared again.
However, rembering her previous bravado, Erina gritted her teeth and walked straight over. Her character crouched down, continuously searching the corpse. In the ga's background music, the character's heartbeat quickened, clearly indicating the ga character's extre nervousness from looting the body. This heartbeat sound was almost identical to Erina's current heartbeat.
A disgusting face, as if it had been gnawed on, appeared on Erina's screen. Erina searched back and forth but found nothing useful on the corpse. She only found a new note. It read "402." Before Erina could share the information with Renz, the put-down corpse slowly dissolved before her very eyes. From a robust, complete flesh-and-blood body, it lted into a pool of blood, with residual human bones within.
Erina, seeing this scene, quickly alt-tabbed out, already breathing heavily. Then, before Renz noticed her reaction, she switched back to the ga screen.
"There's a note here, it says 402," Erina shared the information she found.
"Got it," Renz confird, seeing "New Note" added to his quest log. 402 didn't seem like a password; it was too simple and short for that. It felt more like a classroom number. Either it ant this was the deceased from classroom 402, or the next clue was located in classroom 402.
"Let's go check classroom 402 on the 4th floor first," Renz
decided. The two jogged all the way to the 4th floor.
Along the way, they encountered various startling scenes. As a horror ga, all the necessary horror elents were present. Especially the environnt, which was too dark. The constant need to use a flashlight to explore was quite unsettling. Combined with the school setting, a traditional supernatural backdrop, which was an area with frequent supernatural topics in Japan, it added an intangible layer of horror.
They finally reached classroom 402. Renz pushed the door open.
Classroom 402, whether due to background or design, was even dimr than the hallway once they stepped inside. Even Renz felt a little more nervous. He first fumbled around the classroom entrance, looking for a light switch, but found no way to turn on the lights. He could only use his flashlight to start searching the drawers in the classroom.
In the first drawer, there was a chocolate bar and a Red Bull drink, marked as edible, items for the inventory. Renz took them. In the second drawer, he found a love letter, but the ga noted it as a useless item. Renz thought for a mont and took it anyway. It was useless, but what if it was a piece of information, and he missed it?
The third drawer. Renz saw a severed human head forcefully shoved into the drawer. When the flashlight shone on it, bloodshot eyeballs seed to turn towards Renz, giving him the feeling of being watched. Blood still dripped from the severed neck, as if it had just been decapitated. The viewers in the chat saw this scene, and a bunch of them started spamming.
"Bullet comnts to protect eyes!"
"Protect, protect, protect!"
"Shine! Shine! Shine! Which designer God set this up? It's too damn scary!"
This setting even got Renz. For a mont, the hairs on his back stood up. The first two drawers gave you collectible items, making you think the drawers were for opening boxes and getting quest items. The second drawer even gave you a love letter, bringing a different feeling to a horror ga, lowering your guard. The third drawer went straight for the kill, putting sothing like that inside. Who could handle that? Luckily, Renz had strong psychological fortitude. He quickly recovered.
This was a sudden scare, and one that ca after your guard was down. After the brief scare, you'd realize it was just that.
anwhile, Erina started searching the drawers from the back row. The mont she picked up what looked like a cursed doll, a major ssage suddenly popped up in the upper corner of both their screens.
[You have picked up sothing you shouldn't have. The vengeful spirit is looking for you. Please find new clues and items as soon as possible.]
When this ssage appeared, the entire ga moved past the foreplay and truly began. Renz quickly searched the drawers for items.
[The vengeful spirit has reached the third floor.]
The notifications beca increasingly frequent. Renz and Erina both felt footsteps right next to their ears.
"I'll attract the vengeful spirit's attention; you run separately and find things," Renz decided in a second.
Banter with Erina aside, in the ga, Renz, as a forr professional player, had a clear head on what to do and how to do it. Letting Erina attract the vengeful spirit's attention would be a guaranteed failure. That wasn't suitable for Erina. Her role was to find things and explore for information.
As Renz walked out, a balding middle-aged man in slippers, carrying a giant fire axe, appeared. His broken glasses hung askew. Like a deep-sea shark slling blood, he poked his head out from the stairs and instantly locked onto Erina.
Renz deliberately stood a bit further ahead. Yet, the vengeful spirit showed no interest in Renz. It raised its fire axe and swung a cleave at Erina's character. In such horror gas, players couldn't fight back and could only passively endure being chased, creating a strong sense of helplessness.
Erina was a bit clumsy. She thought that since Renz was in front, the spirit shouldn't attack her, who was behind. But the opponent ignored Renz and cleaved directly at Erina. This caused Erina, who was standing still, to take a direct axe hit.
Consequently, Erina's movent speed dropped significantly after being hit by the axe. Her character, which could previously run, could now only walk briskly. Renz's positioning drew no interest from the opponent, leading him to imdiately conclude that it was due to so item Erina was holding.
But then he heard Erina say, "Renz, don't worry about . Run first. If I die and you're still alive, the ga can continue."
"I picked up a bottle of antibiotics from a drawer earlier. I'm dropping it now. Pick it up and use it."
At this movent speed, Erina would have a hard ti running, so she chose to drop all her inherited items.
There was nothing she could do; she couldn't escape. She was 100% in a state of being chased to death, so there was no need for Renz to stay with her. Instead, Renz should run in another direction and continue the ga's progress.
"What are you talking about?" Renz definitely wouldn't agree to such a thing. In a mont of urgency, he blurted out his true feelings, "I'm not playing this horror ga because I want to play it; I'm playing it because I want to play with you."
"What's the point of playing this ga alone?"
During co-op, banter is banter. You often say you'd sell out your teammates if you had the chance, but in such situations, most people choose to be like the Calabash Brothers rescuing their grandpa if they can save, they will, even if they have to force it. Logically, Renz could have quietly run away without any problem, but a large part of the ga's fun would disappear if he did.
"If we're going to fail, we fail together," Renz said unmoved, completely ignoring what Erina had said.
"Starting over is better than playing alone."
"Also, can you stop interrupting my train of thought?"
"Give that cursed doll. That thing might generate aggro. The reason it's chasing you might be because of that."
Renz said fiercely.
