Chapter 217: Putting two and two Together
Chapter 215
Now that he was finished with everything he needed to observe within his system, he decided to stand up from where he was seated.
Taking one step forward, he paused as a thought suddenly occurred to him.
’Maybe I should just assign those free stat points now.’
Reflecting for a few monts, he scrutinized his attributes over and over again, but unfortunately, he remained undecided on where to allocate them.
Should he prioritize his agility over his strength, or would the opposite be more beneficial?
Co to think of it, what exactly did he lack during the grueling battle with those strange beasts? Speed, perhaps?
But he knew he couldn’t rush this decision.
He needed to calmly distribute the points rather than acting on a whim.
Waving that thought to the back of his mind for the ti being, he decided to scan the rest of the cavern.
Van and Kai were seated side by side with their backs pressed against a cold wall.
Van initially was supposed to have five cores, but because his gear had consud one already, he was left with just four.
He was currently torn on how to proceed.
Should he reserve them for his gear in case the situation demanded it, or should he absorb them to bolster his own ta-force?
At the end of the day, he opted to split the difference.
He could be seen absorbing the essence of the first core, and then the second after a minute or so.
He left the remaining two tucked away in his pockets for ergencies when he might absolutely need to deploy his cannon.
’Co to think of it, I can’t keep relying on the hand cannon all the ti. It expends the cores far too rapidly. I need sothing much more efficient and reliable to use,’ he pondered inwardly while tapping the side of his cheek.
Trish was situated on the other side of the cavern, keeping a distance from the rest of the group, which was a solitude she clearly preferred.
Chloe was pacing around in deep thought, her brow furrowed, while Felix and Caster were walking about, examining the glowing crystals embedded in the stone walls.
Walking toward his companions, Ray sat down between Van and Kai.
"Good now?" Kai asked while casting a sideways glance in the direction of the boy.
Ray nodded slowly. "Just a little bit exhausted and sowhat woozy."
Van sighed as he began playing with one of the cores in his hand, twirling it around at intervals.
"So. What was that? Is it a," The boy quickly looked around to ensure no one was eavesdropping and then lowered his voice.
"... A werewolf thing?"
Ray shrugged noncommittally. "You could say so."
Van sighed again, then shoved the core back into his pocket before his eyes flashed with a bright blue light as he hovered his palm over his bracelet.
Ray, seeing this technical display, decided to ask, "How’s it coming?"
Van didn’t reply for several seconds, his concentration entirely focused on his work as his eyes continued gleaming.
"Earlier, since my ta-force was depleted, I couldn’t get anywhere and had to attempt the modifications manually. But now that my MF has been restored to a substantial amount, I can try using my ability on it to accelerate the process."
Kai rubbed his face exhaustedly. "How much longer will it actually take?"
Van didn’t reply imdiately, staying focused on the task at hand.
After a second or so, he finally gave a response. "Five."
Kai raised a brow, clearly unimpressed.
"Five what? Months? Weeks? Hours?"
Van thought for a few more seconds and then uttered, "Maybe four."
Kai felt a sudden urge to smack the boy in the face as he shouted angrily,
"Four what?!"
The sudden shout drew the attention of the others who had been quietly tending to their own business.
After a second or two, Ray asked in a low whisper,
"Who’s the new boy?"
Kai cocked a brow as he looked in the direction Ray was pointing.
Then, after a mont or two of consideration, he shrugged.
"I don’t really know his na... rember? I’m bad with nas. But I know he is from Berg’s class and quite strong." He thought for a second before adding,
"And fast."
Ray turned to stare at the Aspirant grazing his finger on the crystals with a curious expression on his face.
"So... should I take it that only us here managed to survive that fall?"
"Highly possible. The fall from the top was quite long and so could have passed out from the force of the drop before they even reached the ground. Now, passing out mid-air is a sure way to die when they crash."
Ray nodded along while rubbing his chin.
"hn. How did this even happen? I thought where we were headed was a shortcut of so sorts? So how did we get lead into such a tra..." he stuttered for a second as his eyes widened in horror.
"... Trap! Of course. It’s a fucking trap by Berg!" The Tribrid shouted aloud in anger as he shot upright to his feet.
Everybody blinked in his direction at his sudden shout.
"Berg? What do you an?" Chloe asked with a raised brow.
Even Van, who was focusing on his task, paused as he looked up with his eyes reverting back to their original green color.
Ray facepald himself.
Fury bubbled within him as sparks of lightning began fizzling in the depths of his eyes, crackling with his rising temper.
"Think! Who was the one leading us, saying he knew a shortcut? Berg! We all know that Berg isn’t the type to lead, nor is he the type to care about others. It’s always him first before anybody else."
Chloe opened her mouth to refute the claim then paused, recalling the gate incident.
When the Aberrant had appeared and they were unable to do anything against it, he had been the first to flee.
"Bu-But why will he do this?" Chloe stuttered as she stared at Ray.
Before the Tribrid could answer, Kai replied.
His eyes glead dangerously as he recalled a short conversation he had once had with the legacy.
"To kill Ray. He wants to kill Ray for the longest ti."
Everybody gasped in shock as they looked between Ray and Kai, who were both clenching their jaws tightly in fury beyond anybody’s imagination.
’I have been calm for a while now, refusing to do what I have been running away from. But at this point, I think I have to teach that bastard a lesson regardless of who his family is!’ Kai roared inwardly as he gripped his hands tightly in anger, his knuckles turning white.
"DAMNN IT!" Ray roared into the ceiling in pure rage.
