Chapter 398: Past Life (Part 1) – The Happiness That Couldn’t Be Given_2

“Help up,” Shen Chi squinted and said faintly.

Chen Han did as told and helped him up. Shen Chi then asked, “What ti is it?”

“It’s already half past ten,” Chen Han replied quietly.

Shen Chi glanced outside the window at the sky, a hint of a smile briefly appearing on his face—he was relieved he hadn’t missed the ti.

Chen Han’s expression darkened; he knew…

“Change into my clothes,” Shen Chi said. Hearing this, Han Xinyu frowned, wanting to stop him, but saw Chen Han silently open the wardrobe and take out the clothes for going out.

She stomped her foot and stepped outside the door.

When Chen Han helped the trembling but straight-backed Shen Chi out, Han Xinyu glared at Chen Han, wondering why he still indulged Uncle at such a ti.

Understanding the aning behind her gaze, Chen Han ignored it and silently led Shen Chi out of the hospital.

Han Xinyu seed to realize sothing; her face paused, and her expression dimd.

Chen Han drove while Han Xinyu sat in the passenger seat, and Shen Chi leaned back in the rear seat with his eyes closed, conserving his energy.

At so point, he opened his eyes and looked out the car window, gazing thoughtfully at the French parasol trees on both sides.

Wanwan…

If he had known there would be a day like this, wouldn’t it have been cleaner to die with you in my arms back then?

When they reached the entrance of the graveyard, Shen Chi stopped Chen Han and Han Xinyu from following. The two could only watch anxiously as the old man staggered into the deep parts of the graveyard with the support of a cane.

His head felt dizzy, but seeing the peacefully smiling woman on the tombstone, Shen Chi couldn’t help but smile faintly.

He leaned on the nearby railing and sat down with effort, gazing uninterruptedly at the photo on the tombstone and eventually murmured softly, “Wanwan, does it still hurt?”

He couldn’t forget, even though Wanwan’s face was cold and stiff, the expression of pain that couldn’t be erased.

It was his fault; if he could have run faster…

But he was old and dying; he couldn’t run fast anymore—Wanwan must despise him even more now.

Actually, deep inside, he felt relieved. Thankfully, Wanwan had gone first; otherwise, he truly feared that he might not resist taking her with him.

But it still hurt him that Wanwan had to endure such pain at the end.

“Uncle Chen, how is Uncle’s condition really?” Han Xinyu asked gloomily outside the graveyard.

“It’s only about these two months left,” Chen Han sighed.

“How could that be?” Han Xinyu said incredulously, “Hasn’t Uncle endured for eight years? Then he should be able to hold on longer.”

“It’s no use,” Chen Han glanced away, hiding the tears in his eyes, and spoke in a hoarse voice, “It’s ultimately a malignant tumor in the brain. He persisted in the past because of his unfulfilled revenge and because of Lin Xiaoguai, but now… now that these are gone, he has also lost the strength to continue.”

“Ever since Lin Xiaoguai died after dealing with Xu ii, Uncle has refused to take his dicine. He was unwilling to cooperate with the treatnt he used to agree with.”

“But…” Han Xinyu, with reddened eyes, said, “Uncle Chen, you should persuade him; he always listens to you sowhat.”

Chen Han shook his head and replied, “Let him be. What’s the point of surviving? It’s just prolonged suffering for him if he lives a few more days.”

Hearing this, Han Xinyu was speechlessly stunned. If she found herself in Uncle’s situation, she probably wouldn’t want to live that way either.

Shen Chi leaned on the railing; his mood was unusually peaceful. mories involuntarily drifted to the distant past—he thought this might be the last ti he reminisced about the past—

He had thought more than once, had he not been swayed by his guilt and the potential impact on his military career, and instead, directly agreed to Wanwan’s request for divorce, would his life have turned out differently?

But even if he could return to the past, he would still choose to hold her tightly, refusing to let go even in death!

He once felt that Wanwan’s beauty was the most enthralling weapon; otherwise, he wouldn’t have fallen in love with her at first sight. But later, it proved that her allure was not just skin-deep but sothing much deeper.

Such a beautiful person… only when you truly spent ti with her would you realize that her beauty beca less noticeable day by day, while the soul in her eyes increasingly occupied your heart.

Even though what he saw more of was her indifference, coldness, and even hatred and pain towards him, those clear, pure eyes still managed to stir his heart. The occasional glimpses of her faint smiles, her sadness, or her fragility slowly infiltrated his heart.

Making him willingly sink into despair.

He watched helplessly as the woman he loved beca more silent under his confinent, her gaze turning to madness and despair—Shen Chi knew the pain in his heart then was known only to himself.

“I just want you to be with , don’t worry about the child, it doesn’t matter if we don’t have children!”

“Don’t cry, it hurts to see you cry.”

“If you hate them, shall I take revenge for you, please don’t look so pained and desperate?”

“If we don’t have children, shall I stay with you?”

“Why do you always avoid my eyes? Look at , look at !”

He once put a knife in Wanwan’s hands, pointing at his own heart, asking her to stab it, but she threw the knife away instead.

He was so happy then, because the mont before he had made a bet with himself—if Wanwan really wanted him to die, he would let her go.

Wanwan was such a kind person; he felt that as long as he was sincere, one day he would open her heart.

But he later realized that indeed, Wanwan was kind, but she was also stubborn. Stubbornly unable to see his love for her, stubbornly locking her heart away, stubbornly… unwilling to allow herself happiness.

Yes, even Wanwan herself hadn’t realized she hated many people, but the person she hated the most was herself, so she didn’t allow herself to be happy.

She couldn’t allow herself, who hadn’t protected her child well, to be happy.

Thus, though Shen Chi had many ans, he couldn’t give her happiness.
