Elena’s POV
The guys found it amusing, but they also noticed I had barely touched my als lately.
"You really didn’t need to do that for ," I said.
"Why not? It felt good putting that bastard in his place," Nico replied. The others chuckled while I managed only a weak smile.
"Asher, you threatened to go above the Captain’s authority. Were you serious? Because they might try to transfer one of us over this," I said.
"I won’t allow that to happen. You have my word," he said.
I stared down at my untouched tray and propped my elbow on the table, massaging my temples.
"Another headache?" Koa asked.
"Yes. They’ve been constant lately. I can’t understand why. I never used to get them," I said.
"Want so aspirin?" Nico offered.
"No thanks. I’ll manage. I just want to finish eating and take a hot shower," I said.
We ate the rest of our al without conversation, but when the other firefighters started flooding in, the noise level beca unbearable.
Fortunately I had nearly finished, so I excused myself and headed back to the dormitory.
The guys stayed behind. They ntioned having business to attend to.
I went straight for a long, steaming shower, hoping it might provide so relief.
After getting dressed, I collapsed onto my bunk.
I found myself wishing Asher and I could have more private monts together, but exhaustion made that impossible. I was constantly drained.
I attempted to fall asleep before the others returned to the dormitory, but sleep evaded . My body refused to settle.
I felt incredibly uncomfortable, sweat poured from every pore, my headache intensified, and nausea washed over in waves.
When Asher finally returned to the dormitory, he imdiately assessed my condition and positioned himself beside my bed.
"I have no idea what’s happening to ," I said, struggling to sit upright.
Then I shrieked as I felt a bone snap in my forearm, only to imdiately reset itself into proper position.
I stared at my arm in bewildernt before looking up at Asher.
He remained silent but scooped up in his arms and carried toward the dormitory exit.
He checked carefully to ensure we were unobserved before sneaking around to the building’s rear.
He sprinted to an undamaged section of the periter fence, grabbed it with one hand, and tore it away from its post.
"What the hell?" I gasped.
Without explanation, he gathered up again and we slipped through the opening into the woods.
My bones continued snapping and realigning themselves, but Asher maintained his firm grip and moved at incredible speed through the forest until we reached our secret clearing.
He placed gently on the forest floor, but I couldn’t remain still.
Each bone fracture brought screams I couldn’t suppress, and coherent thought beca impossible.
Nothing existed except the overwhelming agony.
"She’s here," Asher called out.
I looked up at him through sweat-blurred vision.
Two silhouettes erged from the treeline and approached close enough for to recognize Alpha Damien and Luna Elena.
Imdiately convinced they intended to kill , I attempted to stand, but my legs shattered beneath and I crumpled.
Asher dropped to his knees beside , placing his hands on my arms and making soothing sounds.
His touch dulled the pain slightly, but I continued staring at Damien and Elena with pure terror.
