Elena’s POV
What the hell did I do to deserve this treatnt? I had been exemplary at my previous assignnt, following every rule and regulation without question. Throughout my entire deploynt there, I maintained a spotless record with zero disciplinary actions. The sudden transfer order made absolutely no sense to .
Scanning the new base, I noticed soldiers wearing distinctly different uniforms. The standard issue army green and camouflage gear mixed with others dressed entirely in black, similar to what I had seen at my forr station. Corbin wore the black uniform, which imdiately caught my attention.
Sothing felt off about this specialized unit, and my instincts told I probably wouldn’t like whatever was coming.
We approached the main administrative building situated at the base’s entrance, passing through multiple security checkpoints before reaching the Captain’s office. His receptionist announced our arrival, then instructed us to wait in the corridor while he finished his current business.
While standing there, I examined the photographs lining the hallway walls. Each image showcased distinguished soldiers who had served at this facility with exceptional rit. These were clearly the base’s most celebrated personnel.
Corbin’s photograph hung among them, prompting to study both his face and the commorative plaque beneath his na. The inscription read: For exemplary courage in protecting and rescuing his entire unit during combat operations.
If he possessed such heroic credentials, why remained a re private? The rank inconsistency puzzled completely.
The buzzer sounded, granting us entry into the Captain’s office. I closed the door while Corbin imdiately snapped to attention with a crisp salute. I simply observed the interaction with confusion.
"Didn’t your previous base require saluting?" the Captain questioned directly.
"Not particularly," I replied honestly.
"Well, here you absolutely do," he stated firmly. I rendered the expected salute as he leaned back in his chair, studying with calculating eyes.
"So you’re the transfer they sent us," he observed.
"I’m still unclear about the reasoning, sir. I received movent orders this morning without explanation," I clarified. He nodded thoughtfully, pressing his lips together.
"I’m Captain Blackwood, and this entire operation falls under my command. I maintain extrely high standards here. We salute properly, we never allow idle soldiers, and we continuously push ourselves toward peak performance. Are we understood?" he demanded.
"Yes, sir," I confird.
"Excellent. You’ve undoubtedly noticed our dual uniform system. Green indicates standard infantry personnel who handle typical missions and overseas deploynts. However, the black uniforms designate our elite operatives. You’ll be joining their ranks.
They’re called Hunters. The regular soldiers remain unaware of Hunter operations, and we prefer maintaining that separation. You’ll be housed with other Hunters who already know your background and origins. They understand you’ve essentially lived your entire life on military bases. Therefore, I expect nothing less than peak performance during your service here. I will not tolerate disrespect or any behavior that tarnishes my reputation," Captain Blackwood declared.
"Yes, sir. I have no intention of causing difficulties, sir," I assured him.
"Excellent. Private Sullivan, escort Private..." he paused, realizing he didn’t know my surna.
"Vaughn," I supplied.
"Take Private Vaughn to the ss hall for lunch, then begin incorporating her into your standard daily operations," Captain Blackwood ordered.
Both Corbin and I saluted before departing his office.
Once outside, Corbin imdiately recognized my unsettled state.
"Don’t stress about him. He’s not always that aggressive, plus we rarely interact with him directly," Corbin reassured .
"How much information do they have about my background?" I asked, dreading the answer.
My hopes for a clean slate had evaporated. Those administrators had clearly shared everything about my unconventional upbringing on that base without parents or family. The whole situation felt like complete bullshit.
