Fu Yan’s eyes were deep, slightly lowered, staring at her.

She was quite tall, only half a head shorter than him, probably about 1.7 ters.

The cold wind was bleak, and she carried a fragrance on her, not strong or pungent, but pleasant-slling.

She turned her head to look towards the entrance of the alley, and from Fu Yan’s angle, he could see her exposed fair neck.

Fu Yan swallowed hard, his gaze burning as he watched her icy face, his fingertips gently rubbing her wrist, gradually loosening his grip.

"I’m sorry."

Jin Can glanced at him and left the alley without saying a word.

Fu Yan sat decadently on the steps at the doorway, smoking, while Wang Xinyu approached with a gossipy look, and plopped down next to Fu Yan: "I just saw my sister with a scowl, hey, you didn’t try to kiss her forcefully, did you?"

"Almost."

Wang Xinyu gave him a thumbs-up: "Aweso, Brother Yan, I’ve always thought you were out of the ordinary since we were kids. It’s been many years, and you still have your charm."

Fu Yan gave him a look, his tone self-deprecating: "Where do you see any charm in ?"

Wang Xinyu patted his shoulder: "Brother Yan, don’t be discouraged. My sister, she can’t handle people being good to her."

Fu Yan perked up, raising an eyebrow: "Why?"

"Because of my aunt and uncle. Otherwise, why during the sumr vacation when you ca to our town did you always see her at ho? Because my aunt and uncle neglected her. In elentary school, my sister lived with our grandmother, but not long after, our grandmother passed away, and she was sent to a boarding school. That ti, my aunt got pregnant, soon after, a little boy was born, and then they turned my sister’s room into a nursery, moving all of her stuff out. The first thing my sister heard when she ca ho for vacation wasn’t a warm welco, but ’here’s so money, you should move out’."

"So things can’t be solved with money, like my sister craving parental love and attention, but after my aunt and uncle had their son, they completely forgot they had a daughter. From their actions over the years, it’s clear, they never liked my sister, for them, giving money equated parenting."

"Later, if it hadn’t been for my dad and mom visiting my aunt and uncle in the city, they wouldn’t have known that a twelve-year-old girl was living alone, not coming ho even for New Year’s because her ho couldn’t accommodate her. When my dad found my sister, she was holed up in a rental nibbling on a piece of bread. My dad felt so heartbroken, from then on, every sumr and New Year’s, he would take her back to our small town. One sumr, you ca around, and kept picking on her."

Fu Yan smiled a wry smile.

Wang Xinyu sighed, "My sister is most afraid of people being good to her, she feels like she’s burdening others. Also, she easily develops feelings and dependence on people who treat her well. In high school, a boy took special care of her, and they later beca a couple, but eventually, they broke up."

Fu Yan, puffing on his cigarette, asked, "Was that boy Xie Haoyan?"

"How did you know?"

"Just a guess."

Wang Xinyu frowned, "You know him?"

"Not well, just a friend of a friend."

Wang Xinyu slowly nodded: "My aunt and uncle really, not caring in her childhood, and when my sister grew up, they still wanted to use her, wanting her to marry a rich man because she beca more beautiful. I’ve never seen such parents."

Fu Yan had t Jin Can’s parents when he dressed as a woman pretending to be her "girlfriend."

But he still couldn’t figure out why she deceived her parents by saying she liked won; now he understood.

"It’s getting late, Brother Yan, I should go back to sleep."

Fu Yan lit another cigarette, took a deep drag, and nodded at Wang Xinyu.

Later, deep into the night, he tossed and turned in his wooden bed, only managing to fall asleep in the latter part of the night.

He didn’t know what ti he had slept until, it was just dawn, and the ringing of a video call alert kept sounding. Fu Yan reached for his phone, it was Fu Ying.

He frowned as he answered, and a small, tender round face appeared on the screen, cooing, "Uncle, good morning."

Fu Yan stared at Little Ball’s pudgy little face on the screen, the milky voice clearing away the gloom in his heart.

"Little Ball, did you miss uncle?"

"I did."

"How much did you miss ?"

"I’m about to cry."

Fu Yan couldn’t help but laugh, yet felt much relieved inside: "Little Ball, where is your mom?"

"My mom and dad are in the room."

Fu Yan teased him: "Your mom and dad are thinking of having a little sister for you."

"But I like having a little brother."

"Why is that?"

"There’s a little girl nad Huixing living downstairs at my grandma’s place who cries all the ti, it’s so annoying."

Fu Yan laughed: "It’s normal for little girls to cry, they need comforting."

Little Ball: "But, she’s really loud."

"At such a young age, you’re such a typical guy. Look at what your dad wears on his wrist, learn from your dad."

"I know, my dad said it was a gift from mom." Little Ball asked, "Is the one I gave Uncle Fu still there?"

After knowing about the item on his dad’s wrist, Little Ball also took a small elastic band from his mom and put one on him too.

Fu Yan always wore it and never took it off.

Fu Yan raised his hand: "It’s still here."

Then, as Little Ball was chatting with him, he suddenly felt hungry, dropped the phone, and ran off to find his dad and grandma. Fu Yan felt extrely soft-hearted, particularly wishing he had a child of his own.

He hung up the video call, restless and unable to sleep, thinking about Jin Can, and absentmindedly played with his phone until it was bright outside.

Fu Yan washed up and went downstairs to buy so snacks at the convenience store, passing by Uncle Wang’s place, Jin Can was teaching a few kids how to write, showing great patience in pointing out their mistakes repeatedly.

Now she had long wavy hair, looking like a mature woman; Fu Yan almost forgot that before he teased her, she was a rather quiet girl with a cold deanor.

Maybe back then she was inherently rebellious, only restraining herself because she was afraid to disappoint the few people who were kind to her.

She looked down, her hair falling forward, tirelessly tucking it behind her ear.

Fu Yan stepped out, gathered her hair in his hands, and tied it up.

Her hair was soft, cold in his hands. Fu Yan secured the elastic band and let go.

Jin Can turned around to look at him.

Fu Yan: "My little nephew fitted this elastic band, it’s from his mom."

Jin Can didn’t say anything, just turned her head and continued teaching the kids how to write.

Fu Yan watched for a while, but soon Wang Xinyu pulled him out of the house.

Jin Can glanced at his retreating figure, then silently withdrew her gaze.

In the afternoon, Du Chengjun ca again.

The two walked alongside the pond, seemingly having a pleasant conversation.

Wang Xinyu: "Brother Yan, do you think my sister and this Du Chengjun could really beco a thing?"

Fu Yan frowned, watching the two without saying a word.

Wang Xinyu: "If my sister had no feelings for this Du Chengjun, given what I know about her, she definitely wouldn’t have co out just because he called, and moreover to walk together. Brother Yan, you’re in danger."

Fu Yan’s frown deepened.

Not because of Wang Xinyu’s words, but because Jin Can was smiling at that man.
