Fu Yan left the house early in the morning, as the small town had a custom of setting off firecrackers before eating during the New Year.
As Fu Yan left the house, household after household were setting off firecrackers.
He wanted to go out and take a look, a young man in his twenties.
"That, Brother Yan, my dad asked to call you over to our place for a al."
It took Fu Yan a mont to realize that this was Uncle Wang’s son, Wang Xinyu.
He never used to include Wang Xinyu in his gas when they were little; Wang Xinyu always liked to trail behind the older kids.
Then he went to high school, and never returned to the countryside until later when, out of spite, Jin Can had Wang Xinyu pretend to be a wealthy second generation pursuing her.
Wang Xinyu, sensing that there was an issue between Fu Yan and his sister, gossiped, "Brother Yan, do you like my sister or what?"
"Yes, I like her." Fu Yan nodded, openly admitting it.
Wang Xinyu "oh"ed aningfully: "Then you’re done for, my sister, she likes girls."
As the two approached the door, Fu Yan saw Jin Can coming out of a small shop, holding several large bottles of drinks, took a few steps, couldn’t carry them any further, and stopped again.
Fu Yan went over and took them from her.
Jin Can looked up at him.
"I’ll help you."
Jin Can didn’t speak.
Wang Xinyu followed behind, laughing in a way that was inscrutable.
"Sister, he likes you."
Jin Can frowned: "Shut up, if you go blabbering everywhere, you’re as good as dead."
Wang Xinyu teased: "Why so nervous? If you had a boyfriend, Uncle would be overjoyed."
Jin Can: "If you could bring a girlfriend ho next year, your dad would be even happier."
Wang Xinyu pouted: "I’m only in my twenties, you’re nearly 30, alright?"
Jin Can didn’t speak and gave him a kick.
Jin Can thought he would leave after putting things away, but who knew he would sit down courteously and have breakfast.
He also had a long chat with her uncle, speaking more decisively than before, probably having matured.
Her uncle suddenly asked Fu Yan, "When I last saw you, you were just a bit over twenty, now you’re thirty, have you taken a wife yet?"
Fu Yan glanced at Jin Can and shook his head: "Not yet."
Uncle Wang nodded: "You’re thirty, it’s about ti to get married. It’s the sa with Cancan, she’s well into her twenties and still doesn’t have a partner."
Uncle Wang shifted the topic, "How much older are you than Cancan? Two, three years?"
Fu Yan: "Three years."
Uncle Wang paused and then smiled aningfully.
"I heard Cancan went to the sa university as your sister."
Fu Yan nodded: "Yes."
"Quite a coincidence."
"Uncle, I’m full." Jin Can put down her chopsticks, preparing to return to her room.
"Get dressed up a bit, relatives are coming over soon, try to look presentable."
The real aning behind those words, everyone could understand.
Jin Can didn’t say a word and went back to her room.
After snagging a free breakfast, Fu Yan dragged Wang Xinyu out the door.
Wang Xinyu frowned: "What are you pulling out here for?"
Fu Yan: "When you were a kid, you always followed around, have you forgotten?"
Wang Xinyu: "I didn’t know better as a kid, who would follow you around now?"
Fu Yan glanced at his phone, the screen displaying a ga.
"Like this ga?"
Wang Xinyu, without looking up, playing a small team battle, then dying tragically, frowned deeply.
"I’ll buy you the full set of skins, whether it’s epic, legendary, or world champion, whatever’s available, I’ll get them all for you."
Wang Xinyu looked up at him, skeptical: "For real or just kidding? What are you up to?"
"No reason, just got money to burn."
"The full set of skins, that’s a lot of money."
Fu Yan stuffed a cigarette in his mouth, dangling it, and took out his phone: "Add on WeChat, whatever you want, I’ll get it for you."
Wang Xinyu shook his head repeatedly: "Forget it, he who takes the hand is short, I know."
Fu Yan: "..."
Not long after, the Wang Family ca with two people, a middle-aged couple, bringing with them a young man in his twenties.
Fu Yan licked his lower lip, elbowed Wang Xinyu and jerked his chin toward the three people who ca in: "Your relatives?"
In the midst of the busyness, Wang Xinyu glanced up: "No, don’t know them, probably so distant relatives who are hardly related, maybe they are here for my sister’s matchmaking."
"Is your sister willing to go on a blind date?"
Wang Xinyu: "No, she’s not willing. It must be my dad calling it relatives, covertly introducing two people to each other."
Then it wasn’t long before Jin Can and the young man ca out, the two of them walking to a more open area.
Fu Yan tossed his cigarette butt aside, stomped it out, and followed them.
Snowflakes had stopped last night, but now they began to drift down again.
The two people ahead kept their distance, walking along the path, with green wheat fields on either side.
"Hello, my na is Du Chengjun, you’ve probably figured it out by now? They got us to walk together, there must be an ulterior motive."
Jin Can slid his hands into his coat pockets, head lowered, and corners of his mouth pulled into a smile: "You don’t want to either?"
Du Chengjun pushed his glasses, smiled: "I have a girlfriend, but my mom doesn’t approve. She forced to co to this blind date over New Year’s, I had no choice."
Jin Can chuckled softly: "It’s okay, we can just say we didn’t feel attracted to each other."
"That works." Du Chengjun turned his head slightly back: "Has he been following us all along, likes you?"
"Soone from the sa village, as a kid he was kicked by a sheep while herding, not quite right in the head."
Du Chengjun laughed: "But, I feel like the way he looks at is a bit off."
"His mind isn’t right, always imagining himself as a hero, looking at everyone as if he detests evil."
"Then..." Du Chengjun paused, suddenly amused, "It’s quite interesting, the way he looks at , as if he could co up and hit the next second."
"He wouldn’t dare."
"That sure?"
Jin Can gave a noncommittal "Hmm."
"Do you know him well?"
"No."
Du Chengjun: "From your tone, it sounds almost like a petty lovers’ quarrel."
Jin Can frowned: "I have nothing to do with him."
Du Chengjun said no more, just gave a deep smile and nodded.
Fu Yan was following behind, taking puffs of his cigarette one after another, until evening, when the man left after having dinner at Jin Can’s house.
At the dinner table, Jin Can and the man talked and laughed, seeming to get along well, which filled Fu Yan with jealous rage.
It was a relief when the man finally left, Jin Can seed reluctant to see him go, following him out, and only turning back after watching his car get farther and farther away.
Fu Yan let his tongue rest against his cheek, his eyes darkening, pinched the cigarette and quickly stepped in front of Jin Can.
"What are you doing, move aside."
"Did you fancy him?" asked Fu Yan.
Jin Can knitted his brows: "What’s it to you?"
"I’m the first man for you, damn it!"
Jin Can’s chest felt a heavy hit, his breath stalled, his eyes reddening slightly.
Enraged, Fu Yan’s eyes deepened, he suddenly grabbed her wrist and dragged her into a dark alley.
"What are you doing? Fu Yan, are you sick? Let go."
He was very strong, trapping Jin Can between himself and the wall, she began to panic, her eyes glaring fixedly at him in the darkness.
He drank quite a bit of alcohol at the dinner table that night, his breath was heavy now, and she could sll the strong aroma of alcohol on him.
Jin Can’s anxiety slowly grew, her body pressed tightly against the wall as she turned her face away.
Fu Yan, realizing how stiff her body was, sighed deeply, looked down at her with a calm and gentle tone.
"Jin Can, you’re about to drive to death."
Jin Can: "You could choose to give up, go ho."
"Do you think I don’t want to give up? I’ve been trying to find girlfriends for years. They’re prettier, younger, and more passionate than you, but I just can’t help myself!"
Fu Yan’s grip on her wrist tightened, he lowered his head, fixating on her stubborn lips.
She was especially cold, turning her face to look elsewhere, her tone also cold: "Let go, or I’ll call out."
