Chapter 42: Chapter fourty two: Health Tonic
Her cool hand felt like rain after a long drought against Alexander’s burning skin.
Without thinking, he grabbed her hand and pressed it against his face. Opening his eyes, he looked at her in the darkness, his gaze intense.
"It’s not a fever," he said hoarsely. "The soup tonight... sothing was off."
It must have been a health tonic. A very strong one, Alicia realized.
She imdiately understood the situation and looked at him nervously.
"What are we going to do now?"
Alexander propped himself up and suddenly pinned her beneath him. Their eyes locked.
He was clearly restraining himself. His brows were tightly furrowed, sweat forming on his forehead.
The heat from his breath was almost unbearable.
Alexander’s face twisted with restraint as he took a deep breath and buried his head in the crook of her neck, while Alicia lay there frozen, trying to process what was happening.
Suddenly, he rolled off the bed and strode toward the bathroom.
The sound of running water soon filled the room.
Alicia let out a quiet breath of relief.
Nothing had gone too far.
Because deep down, she knew she might not have been able to resist him.
Yet at the sa ti, bitterness spread through her heart.
He would rather suffer, rather take a cold shower, than break his loyalty to Lilian.
The sound of water falling from the bathroom felt like cold rain falling on her heart.
She pulled the blanket over herself and curled into a ball on the large bed.
A cold shower at this hour could make him sick, but he didn’t care.
Just like how he would endure spicy food for Lilian, disregarding his own health.
If he didn’t care about his own health, then why should she?
Eventually, she drifted back to sleep.
Soti during the night, she thought she heard Alexander take another shower.
The next morning, Alicia was awakened by the sound of a phone ringing.
Still half asleep, she picked it up without opening her eyes.
"Hello..."
There was no response.
"Hello?"
She opened her eyes and realized the phone wasn’t hers.
It was Alexander’s.
The call disconnected, and she noticed the caller’s na.
Lilian.
Alicia quickly shook him awake.
"Sorry... I answered your call just now."
Alexander glanced at the call history on the phone, took it from her, and got out of bed. He dialed Lilian’s number and walked toward the balcony.
As soon as the call connected, it was imdiately disconnected.
It happened several tis.
Clearly, Lilian was upset.
Alexander quickly dressed and opened the door.
Surprisingly, it opened easily now.
"I’m leaving," he said. "Jim will co pick you up."
Alicia sat on the bed watching him rush around, a bitter smile tugging at her lips.
He was really nervous about Lilian.
"Alicia!"
Rosaline’s voice ca from outside as she knocked on the door.
"Are you up? I saw Alexander leave earlier. That boy was in such a rush to get to work he didn’t even eat breakfast."
"Nana, I’m getting up. I’ll be out in a minute."
Alicia forced a smile as she slowly got out of bed to get dressed.
Alexander’s POV
I had been standing outside Lilian’s door for two hours.
Finally, Eliza opened the door and let
in.
She whispered quietly, "Lilian’s emotions are very unstable right now. Don’t upset her. Try to go along with whatever she says."
"Okay."
I walked to the bedroom door and knocked.
"Lilian, are you in there?"
"Go away!" Lilian’s frantic voice ca from inside.
I pushed the door open and saw her sitting on the window seat, looking tense.
I rushed over imdiately.
"Lilian, please don’t do anything rash."
Her eyes filled with tears as she forced a bitter smile.
"Alexander, I’ve lived my whole life without asking for much. I only ever wanted to be with you forever. But now... even that simple wish can’t co true. What’s the point of living anymore?".
