Chapter 16: Chapter 16 Sending Ho
Lu Jingyan’s fingertips quivered, and her phone clattered to the ground.
The color drained from her face in an instant.
Her clenched fist trembled violently, and even her breathing began to quicken.
The phone, which she rarely let out of her hand, now looked glaring and terrifying in her eyes.
She swallowed hard, as if frightened by sothing, and after struggling for a while, finally picked up the phone.
Her fingers unsteady on the keyboard, she mistyped the simple three words several tis, “Who are you?”
The owner of the number didn’t reply, perhaps they were offline.
Lu Jingyan stared at the conversation on the screen, feeling more suffocated the more she looked.
Aunt Sun was not ho at this mont, and Lu Hongcheng rarely ca back in the evenings, leaving her alone in the entire house.
She was a bit afraid.
She wanted soone by her side.
It didn’t matter who, just anyone would do.
Lu Jingyan thought this and quickly got up without even changing out of her pajamas, then desperately ran out.
Lu Jingyan ran out of the neighborhood, heading towards the brightly lit square.
Though it was cold, there were still quite a few people gathered in the square.
Lu Jingyan, looking at one strange face after another, slowly stabilized her emotions.
The mall was about to close, and Lu Jingyan didn’t go in; instead, she looked around and walked towards a supermarket by the roadside.
She was not in the mood to browse the supermarket and headed straight for the tobacco and alcohol section. She grabbed a pack of cigarettes and several cans of beer, paid, and walked out.
She found a random chair in the square and sat down, popping a can of beer and gulping down most of it in one breath.
The mall closed.
The number of people in the square dwindled.
Lu Jingyan watched the lights in the mall go out one by one but never left.
…
Sheng Xian had a bit to drink tonight and didn’t drive.
As the taxi drove along this road, he felt a sense of familiarity, only realizing he had been here last night when he saw the na of the neighborhood.
A little further ahead was the mall, and while waiting for the light to turn green, he glanced outside the window.
Then he saw her.
She was wearing pajamas with her hair casually tied up, sitting on a wooden chair with her feet in cotton slippers, looking up and blowing smoke rings.
In the brief ti he watched her, she took a swig of beer from a can in one hand.
Quite a rebellious scene.
Not at all reassuring.
He had never seen a girl like her, dressed so carelessly deep into the night, squatting by the side of the road, drinking and smoking.
Sheng Xian sat up straight, “Stop here, please.”
It was still so distance from his destination. The taxi driver, surprised, asked, “You want to stop here?”
Sheng Xian nodded without a change of expression and took out his wallet to pay.
After the taxi left, he crossed the road.
He was still on the zebra crossing when several n erged from the Hot Pot City exit of the mall.
There were barely any people left in the square, and her unique appearance as a young lady drew the n’s attention instantly.
The group of n, flashy in their dress, didn’t look like decent folk.
It would’ve been fine if they just glanced at her more than necessary, but she, in turn, kept looking back at them just as frequently.
And as those n passed by her, she bit on her cigarette and cursed with foul language, “What are you looking at?!”
Great.
She confronted them with an air of self-righteous entitlent.
Sheng Xian exhaled wearily and quickened his pace.
“Fuck, what’s wrong with looking at you a few tis?”
“What? Is your face so precious that people can’t even look at it?”
“I don’t just want to look; I want to touch too. Hey, miss, feeling lonely alone? How about we keep you company?”
Those boys were clearly pretty drunk, staggering as they walked, and they weren’t speaking very nicely.
Those boys were all talk and no action.
If the good little student had just shut up, the matter would’ve been over.
But to their surprise, she stood alone, her presence as overwhelming as if she were several tis their number, and she smashed her can in front of them, “With just you guys…”
She circled around those n, looking them over from head to toe, and finally her gaze landed on their faces, “…a bunch of misshapen jujubes?”
Sheng Xian: “…”
Those n: “…”
The plaza went completely quiet.
So quiet it was almost eerie.
The instigator who caused this atmosphere flicked her cigarette ash, “What? Did I say sothing wrong?”
“Look at you, fat and short like a stubby winter lon? And you, with a face shaped like a tragic gourd.”
“…”
Sheng Xian closed his eyes and let out a long sigh.
Three seconds later, the n completely lost it.
Amidst a chaotic flurry of foul language, a man, unable to restrain himself, charged toward Lu Jingyan.
Lu Jingyan sat on the chair, smoking leisurely as she watched the man who looked like he wanted to skin her alive, and she let out a scornful laugh.
She was very calm.
It was more apt to describe her as composed rather than just calm.
As composed as an emotionless puppet doll.
As if the person facing danger at this mont wasn’t her at all.
When the man was about a ter away, Lu Jingyan nonchalantly put out her cigarette.
She shook her wrist, just about to stand up, when soone stepped in front of her, blocking the man who was charging over.
Lu Jingyan was taken aback, following the line of the long legs in front of her upward, and when she saw the familiar figure, she opened her mouth.
She was in a really bad mood before.
So bad that she felt like picking a fight for no reason just to brawl with soone.
But now there was no need.
Lu Jingyan laughed, and as she laughed, she collapsed onto the bench and closed her eyes.
…
Those n were all bluster and no bite.
Sheng Xian hardly had to lift a finger, and the bunch of them, after spouting so fierce words, cursed their way out of there.
Sheng Xian turned back and stared at the person who had sohow fallen asleep on the bench, picked up the cigarette butts and the can off the ground, tossed them in the nearby trash can, and then bent down to pick her up.
Her place wasn’t far from here, so Sheng Xian didn’t call a car. It took about ten minutes to walk to her front door.
He rang the doorbell and was promptly let in.
It was a middle-aged woman; upon seeing Lu Jingyan in his arms, she quickly made way for him, “What happened to Miss Lu?”
“She’s drunk,” Sheng Xian asked, “Which room is hers?”
Auntie Sun led the way, taking him upstairs, “It’s this room, I’ll go down and make her so honey water. Thank you so much.”
Sheng Xian gave a slight nod, didn’t say a word, kicked open the door, entered, and placed her on the bed.
He pulled over the quilt and draped it over her, ready to leave.
Before he could turn around, his sleeve was gently tugged with a very light force.
