"Don’t keep talking about my business; it’s always the sa old stories, and there’s nothing much to say." Su Mu looked at her, "Compared to mine, I’m more curious about yours. Every ti I call you, you don’t want to talk, but you always want to be at ease. What exactly is going on between you and Ji Nanfeng?"
Jiang Bei was taken aback for a mont and smiled faintly:
"Qiao Na’s baby is gone."
Su Mu was not surprised by this answer. After all, she had ntally prepared for it and nodded, "Was it sothing Ji Nanfeng took care of?"
She would have expected a definite yes, but instead, Jiang Bei shook her head:
"It was Rong Shen."
"Rong Shen?" Su Mu was startled, "How could he..."
Jiang Bei let out a cold laugh:
"Right, what does my business have to do with him? Yet, he barged in without warning or greeting and just took Qiao Na away, perford the abortion, and said he knew I wouldn’t do it myself, and since he’s killed plenty, he wouldn’t mind one more child. Since it’s a risk for , he took care of it."
Su Mu was silent for a few seconds; the end of Qiao Na’s child hadn’t been what she had imagined. Regardless of what Jiang Bei had said previously, seeing Ji Nanfeng, Su Mu could sense that he didn’t have any intention of harming the child inside Qiao Na; he had wanted to keep it, but now...
"What about Ji Nanfeng? What did he say?"
Jiang Bei shook her head:
"He didn’t say much, just the one sentence, ’After all, it’s neither a legitimate na nor a rightful claim.’"
"Did he confront Rong Shen?"
Given Ji Nanfeng’s character, he wouldn’t tolerate such humiliation. Whether the child was his wife’s or not, it was ultimately his seed. With his arrogance, how could he endure soone destroying his child for no reason?
Jiang Bei nodded:
"He did go to see him, but that was all there was to it. What’s done is done; no one has the power to put the child back into its mother’s belly."
Su Mu didn’t know what to say anymore. Rong Shen was too ruthless, but ultimately, Jiang Bei had played a role in it. She worried Jiang Bei would bla herself excessively:
"You’re not going to put the child’s death on yourself, are you?"
Jiang Bei simply smiled:
"Can I really escape bla? If it weren’t for , would Rong Shen have taken issue with a child?"
"But..."
"You don’t have to persuade ." Jiang Bei interrupted Su Mu: "I’m not as obstinate as you think. I’ll get over it soon enough. I’ve applied for maternity leave in advance and have been resting at ho. I’ll be fine, just don’t worry."
After such an event, how could she not worry? But Jiang Bei’s deanor, suggesting she didn’t want to speak any more on the matter, made Su Mu unable to say much more in the end, only letting out a sigh.
Wei Shaoqin saw that their conversation had ended, so he ca over with Qiqi in his arms, glancing at the two of them:
"What were you talking about? Why is the atmosphere so heavy?"
Jiang Bei smiled and broke the silence first:
"I was discussing with Susu where you’ve been disappearing to lately. Susu told you’ve t a new friend? Why not bring them over to et us?"
Wei Shaoqin looked towards Su Mu, who was also giving him a curious look, and couldn’t help but feel a bit helpless:
"What’s with that tone? Isn’t it just a new friend I made? I thought he was having a tough ti but was also a good person, so I made friends with him. How can such an ordinary thing seem so sleazy when you tell it? It’s as if I’ve done sothing terribly wrong."
Neither Su Mu nor Jiang Bei found anything abnormal, except that Wei Shaoqin used to treat their little trio as the core of his social life, but now since he had a new friend, they were no longer the center. They felt no loss or jealousy; they just sensed that the friend must be very important to Wei Shaoqin.
But Wei Shaoqin obviously didn’t want to talk any further, just saying they’d et soti in the future for a al. Jiang Bei and Su Mu each had their own concerns and casually agreed.
In the following days, Su Mu was busy taking Qiqi to order so office supplies, then got occupied with other matters. She was still hesitating whether to send Qiqi to see Wen Shaoyuan at the Wen Family or to call Fu Shinian when Fu Shinian’s call ca in, with only one sentence:
"I will pick up Qiqi."
Suddenly, Su Mu felt very foolish because the culprit in the underground parking lot had not been found yet, and Fu Shinian had already arranged for people around her. Although it didn’t affect her life, compared to her lifestyle, she was told everything straight to Fu Shinian.
Thinking of the recent atmosphere at the Wen Family and Wen Shaoyuan’s state, Su Mu agreed to et and took Qiqi with her.
However, Fu Shinian changed his plans at the last minute, saying he was tied up with an ergency eting and asked her to take Qiqi directly to the Fu Corporation building. Even during marriage, Su Mu hadn’t stepped foot in Fu Shinian’s workplace. The closest she had co was to et him downstairs after work. Now, with their current relationship, she was even less inclined to go, and spoke directly:
"Then I’ll take Qiqi to Bishui Yuntian."
"Grandma isn’t ho," Fu Shinian used, "She went to the mountains with Shiyue, and they won’t be back until tomorrow."
Su Mu was silent for a long ti:
"Then I’ll wait until you’re not busy to co over. I’ll keep Qiqi with ."
"Isn’t today when the office furniture you ordered is being delivered? Taking Qiqi there, in case of any bumps or bruises, you wouldn’t be heartbroken, but I still wouldn’t bear it," Fu Shinian was silent for a few seconds. "My workplace won’t do anything to you, what are you afraid of? If you really don’t want to co, I’ll cancel the eting and co now."
Su Mu thought it over; indeed, with nothing to hide, even if they saw each other frequently, there would be nothing to it. Her evasive reluctance to et seed sowhat unable to let go, pretentious even. So she changed her mind:
"I’ll co now."
Fu Shinian’s voice didn’t reveal any emotion but he assented:
"I’ll wait for you to co."
Twenty minutes later, Su Mu arrived at Fu Corporation’s building, which had once been glorious and had also been desolate, but still drew people like moths to a fla. Su Mu walked into the lobby with Qiqi’s hand in hers, and before she could explain her purpose, the receptionist at the front desk smiled and said:
"Are you Miss Su? Mr. Fu’s assistant already notified us. Just let us take you upstairs."
Su Mu was glad to skip the hassle, nodded in agreent, and led by the receptionist, headed towards the elevator. The elevator belonging to Fu Shinian required a passcode, which the receptionist didn’t know, but they only took Su Mu to the elevator and said:
"We don’t know the password for the elevator, but Mr. Fu said, it’s your birthday."
